Project Scorpio vs Xbox One S vs Xbox One: should you make the upgrade?

The Xbox family is growing, but where in the generation should you come in?

I, at first glance, thought it was a waste of time comparing these three. After reading I realized that it is well done and could be helpful.

Yeah, people need to realize how much Scorpio will still help people with a 1080p set. Supersampling, higher LOD, better textures, and other PQ enhancements are all separate from the 4K resolution. So is the extra enhancement of BC 360 games. Plus, one would be futureproofing their investment for when they may upgrade to a 4K TV. To me, there's a lot of reasons for a new investor in XB1 to get Scorpio regardless of the TV they currently own. OTOH, if one already owns an XB1, the need to upgrade may not be as big an issue right away.

Everyone knows that. I think. Same with the PS4 Pro. Every PS4 game will play on the PS4 Pro. There will still be exclusives to the PS4 platform. Scorpio is just another XBox One platform. It will get new exclusives that won't be on PC.

Where Scorpio might separate itself is when it comes to VR.

By the time TV's and monitors are supporting FreeSync2 and HDMI 2.1 the next gen is about to start...

The first 2.1 TV's aren't expected to release this year, next year and then probably won't have full 2.1 spec support. As for FreeSync, well, there aren't any TV's out there today which support the earlier standard so am seriously wondering if TV's ever will.

Monitors tho there it will be added to it but do you want to game on a monitor? Besides, those as well probably aren't releasing this year already...

MS just wanted to add something that didn't cost much to implement AND that they could use as a positive against the other brand but it won't be usable until the TV's/monitors release that support it....

Only if they ditch the lead weight that is the XB1 and allow the Scorpio to breath in frame rate as well as performance.

upgrading to the One S was good for me but mostly because I have two 4K HDR tv's. You do get a slight performance boost as well in gaming but really the biggest gains are 4k ui, 4k streaming content, HDR and games upscaled to 4k. If that stuff is important to you then upgrading to Scorpio is only only going to improve upon what the S improved upon. games will render natively in (up to) 4k so no upscaling or "checkerboard" rendering, and games will be enhanced for scorpio to take advantage of the extra power. From what I've heard and read, the console has enough power/memory in a lot of cases to render native 4k and add more rendering effects much like a pc so that sounds pretty good to me. Also from what I hear, its going to look a lot like the xbox one S but a little bit bigger, so expect the internal power supply and sleeker one s design language. i'm not claiming that to be fact, just what I have heard.

No matter if you have a 4K tv or not the upgrade is a great thing. I didn't decide on purchasing an x1 or S this gen. I have the fantastic Pro. But you can bet come Scorpio launch I'll be right at gamestop. I believe the upgrade is absolutely necessary, especially for guys like me who haven't bought into the xbox brand this gen as well as the hardcore gamers. I can't wait for launch..

If the worthwile games in satisfying numbers would finally start coming in i would opt for an xbox 1s as i didn't want to spend too much for a secondary or third console. Imo Scorpio aims more at people who are already are xbox fans and feel like x1(s) is to weak.

In regards to the Xbox One S, that just seems like such a pointless upgrade.

if you already own an Xbox One the next
logical upgrade if you had to would be Scorpio.

That would be like saying if you own a PlayStation 4 should you buy a PlayStation 4 slim I'm sorry but that doesn't really make any sense I'm not even entirely sure why anyone would upgrade to such a thing if something wasn't wrong with their original PlayStation 4 in the first place the only real logical optional upgrades really are the pro and the Scorpio I don't really see a real reason for anyone to upgrade for small changes or cosmetic stuff

Should I make the upgrade? Hell yeah, been team Xbox since 2001. Why would I not upgrade if the Scorpio allows me to enjoy my X360 BC games enhanced, enjoy my X1 and X1s games enhanced, enjoy my 3rd party games enhanced. It is a no brainer. MS exceeded my expectations on the specs of the console so this has been what many of us console only gamers have been wanting. I also game on the PS Pro, and Wiiu, but what MS is about to do this gen I don't think I have seen in the console market and I have been gaming since the late 70s. $499 or less and I will be happy.

If you don't have an XB1 then just get the S model but if you do have the fat XB1 just stick with it uprading to an S is not worth it especially since the UHD drive is worthless until there are more 4K blu-rays.

The Scorpio however will be something worth upgrading for as it will be more powerful than the Pro but only do so if you have a 4K TV available. Also be weary of the price tag I personally see it being $599 USD at launch, so I most likely won't get it brand new.

Hard question to ask when the price is not available yet! They all have the same games so the question will be if the extra power is worth X amount of dollars, but if we dont know the value of X we cant answer that!
