Never played a JRPG? Jason Rocha looks at how Persona 5 can be your entry into the world of JRPGs
Since its release in 2016, the "Persona 5" series has won numerous game awards around the world and received enthusiastic support from everyone, with cumulative sales of over 10 million units worldwide.
In the world of video games, there’s no genre quite as notoriously difficult to get into as the Turn-Based RPG. Lets review a few RPGs you can play if you’ve tried the biggest and best in turn-based combat and never found it appealing.
Sea of stars while seeming pretty good so far doesn't belong in the top rpg discussion. There's way better ones. I'd tell them to play star ocean 2. One of the best non turn based rpgs ever. It has everything.
The Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, or the Shadow Hearts games has decent enjoyable turn based combat system.
The Persona 5 sub-series has surpassed 9 million copies worldwide and now contributes to over 50% of the series' total sales.
Would be plus+1 more if they'd settle the fk down and stop re releasing it. I'm waiting on the definitive one over here
man I don't know if I'd say this is an entry point for JRPGs. It's a good point for this series, but there's so much unique mechanics and design that are specific to this series and not indicative of JRPGs, especially JRPGs of the current generation.
Honestly if you're all about finding out what made JRPGs epic you have to go back to the golden era (SNES - PS2). Shin Megami Tensei as a whole is a difficult series that can give you a game over even in throw away battles.
Still, I think Shin Megami Tensei beats out any JRPG series this current gen and Persona 5 is my favorite JRPG hands down this generation. Hell, it's my Game of the Year for right now.
I have played three games in the past couple months that have made future games and old games feel inferior.
Horizon Zero Dawn, Zelda Breath of the Wild, and Persona 5.
These three games are 10/10s, and iconic, memorable, replayable gems that transcend the system or year or genre they were released for.
Problem is there is no other games like the Persona Series, not even the mainline SMT games. Persona is truly unique.
