Horizon Zero Dawn is a beautiful and exciting adventure, but its most interesting element is that it focuses on the intellectual curiosity of its hero
Because deep down humans only care about saving themselves, and those they love when it comes to "the end". look at TLOU && Uncharted both great games TLOU focused on characters saving one another and middle finger to the world... Uncharted nate really could care less about saving the world he wanted to find the treasures, until U4 that's when he changed, but in the same sense he did the same thing he always did to save a human not to save the world... we are selfish creatures and prefer our heros to be the same. Superman, Batman etc. always give up on the world for that one human being "Louis Lane & Wonder Woman"
The plot of the game doesn't have to be large in scale to be good. At the same time, a smaller, more personal focused plot doesn't automatically mean it will be good or bad either.
It all comes down to writing. Is the story good or not? Whether its about a huge, world threatening enemy, or simply the main character trying to make it in a world that is already too late to save. Either example can be fantastic or terrible. It all comes down to writing and presentation.
"The plot of the game doesn't have to be large in scale to be good. At the same time, a smaller, more personal focused plot doesn't automatically mean it will be good or bad either."
Exactly. The writer seems to be under the impression that large, epic-scale stories about saving the world and well-written characters having personal struggles you can emphatize with are mutually exclusive to each other, which is total BS. The fact that he uses HZD as an example when the entire last stretch of the game is focused on preventing a robot apocalypse seems to have flown over his head.
But you do end up saving the world in HZD...
It doesn't make sense to use HZD in the main example of this article. Of course it goes into detail about the character and the other motivations/curiosities Aloy has, but the main plot-line is about saving the world. perhaps even on a grander scale than most games.
