Certainly looks like it from the numbers. The 360 sold significantly less well last week than the week before. I expected a more prolonged effect in Japan.

...precision via the games they have released in Japan with respect to fans for those games and Sony could learn a thing or two. With White Knight this year and FF13 next year Sony should see similar boost to PS3 sales. Japanese seem very loyal to the genres of games they love not so much the systems themselves.

MS and Nintendo have recognized that the large amount of games on Ps 1 & 2 are the reason sony beat them last gens, and refuse to let it happen again, which is why they are both actively grabbing any games they can get their hands on!

Microsoft is grabbing as many JRPGs from Sony in Japan because THAT'S what they love to play over there, THAT'S what they buy over there in Japan, and THAT'S the best way to get Japanese gamers to buy your console... if it's the only console in town that has all the JRPGs. Good job to microsoft though. I'm wondering if it was more so due to the price drop or the jrpg's? Because the jrpg's came out a long time ago and the sales went back later. So I'm assuming it's the price drop. Hopefully the boost in the Arcade's sales won't result in Microsoft being less willing to use the harddrive in multiplatform games.

But I have to congratulate MS on their tactics to try to increase sales in Japan. The fact that everyone wrote off the console as dead there, and now we are seeing sales increase like this is a good thing. I figured all we would need were the proper games on the system, and the right price, and even eastern consumers would pick up on the system in due time.
I don't feel bad for Sony because we all know they have failed to capitalize on the large JRPG market over in Japan (and to a lesser extend, the US), causing them to lose out on sales to their rival. I know White Knight Chronicles is coming, but Sony needs to do more in order to win favor with gamers on both sides of the world.

MS is putting the screws to Sony -- and this shows. The Sony MPAA division really threw the SOE (PS brand) a curve when they demanded that SOE save the MPAA (and RIAA) sales divisions by including BluRay.
Looks like MS concentrated on the games, while Sony was busy spending hundreds of millions of bribe money to its MPAA partners to stop supporting HD-DVD.
In the end, the PS-loyal gamer lost, but the Sony MPAA division got a new DRM-laden movie format started (and will actually never succeed).
Xbox 360 will outsell the PS3 this month in Japan. That will generate much press in Japan just before the Winter Holiday. That will bring yet more attention to the JRPG line-up.
Perhaps we'll see Sakaguchi-san's other projects @ the TGS? Cry On and/or Blue Dragon 2 (please, BD2)

Not only on PS3's, also on the extra hardware. At the MediaMarkt (large hardware store overhere) they had a special offer, 2 x GH guitars + GHIII or something like that for 88 EUro. Good price. So I went to the MM in Zwolle and Utrecht. Both sold out on the 360 version. PS3 version was in large, very large supply. I asked the clerk walking around. He said at the start they had equal supplies. The 360 version sold like hot cakes. The PS3 version they just don't sell at all. The PS3's are piled up besides them for 399 Euro for weeks already.
LBP might sell some PS3 hardware at last. The 360 on the other hand is selling a lot, especially with the special price offer of 149 Euro for the Arcade, 199 Euro for the Premium and 249 Euro for the Elite with the special Dutch Xbox.nl offer!

The truth is that the japanese want a PS3 almost as much as a wii and far more than they want a 360.But they want JRPG's more than anything else.SO if the PS3 that they want so much can not deliver on that front, then expect them to move to the console that is more or less delivering the goods.
Price cut alone is not enough you also need the software to back it up.
Microsoft has already started promoting Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4 for the 360 in japan and since there is no big JRPG for the PS3 in japan for the rest of 08, then expect 360 to continue the momentum for the rest of the year.

I know that its all speculation but all i am saying is that if WKS will be released say spring next year, then Sony should start advertising the PS3 with Eternal Sonata,WKS and FF13 and firmly state that WKS and FF13 will be exclusive to the PS3.
If there is one thing I can criticize them about, it's the fact that it seems as if they're neglecting the Japanese market and that's a huge mistake.
If Microsoft outsells them again for the third week...that would be truly disappointing.

You are right about the current losses and ps4, though. The Sony shareholders and board will carefully need to consider if the current (and expected) ps3 losses are an acceptable risk for the next gen.
After all, Sony can't recoup $3.5 billion in ps3 losses by getting outsold in their home stronghold by the foreign upstart 360!
I care about console sales especially those of the PS3 and 360 because they are the true next gen consoles available.And if they fail then expect the PS4 and xbox720 to be nothing more than the current gen with a ram upgrade and a waggle controller, with Cooking mama type games mostly.
Secondly i have never been a JRPG player but after reluctantly given Lost Odyssey a try and loving it to bits i simply want more.And if the 360 is successful in Japan then you know that Microsoft will fund the sequel to Lost Odyssey and more japanese devs will support the console by providing it with more JRPG's.
There is nothing wrong with wanting a console to be sucessfull but what is wrong is wanting the opposition to loose so badly that they drop out of the console war.
I love the 360 but i want Sony to be right up there putting more and more pressure on Microsoft in order for them to keep cutting prices,delivering more games and improving XBL.

Makes no difference to me since I already own one and have found that console sales this late in the game don't make for better games. I am happy they are selling well but look more forward to game releases then console sales data.
If MS have surpassed the Original Xbox's numbers then there is something to be feeling good about, if the 360 continues to sell.
It will take a long time for Sony to surpass it's PS2 unit sales in individual regions but the Original Xbox sales weren't all that great and MS is already surpassing the Original Xbox sales.

Why? Because (generally) the Market for Video Game Consoles is fixed.
There are X number of *total* houses/people that buy Consoles. Yes, each generation, this gets greater.
But, as of right now, the Wii is 35M, Xbox 360 25M and PS3 15M. That is 75M Total -- sold, this generation, right now.
So, last generation the PS2 sold 120, DreamCast 60M, GC 20M and Xbox 24M. That is 225M total.
Imagine a "25%" growth -- that makes the 7th gen about a 280M market.
With the 7th Gen currently at 75M. The Wii and Xbox 360 would need to dry up almost totally -- and the PS3 to **DRASTICALLY* leapfrog them in sales.
There is zero chance that is going to happen.
The PS3 will finish in 3rd this gen. And, it will sell a little more than half that of the PS2, or about 70M-ish total.
The Wii will finish in first, about 120M.
The Xbox will finish second, about 100M.
However, I expect the Xbox 360 to change the console market by going "set-top box" in competition with TiVo, AppleTV, CableSettop Boxes and "Xbox 360 Inside" televisions.
With that, the Xbox 360's numbers (in the end) will end up first. The Wii will not continue in this direction. The PS3 will not be able to have this "Long Tail" because it requires a HD & BR.
It believe that "Xbox 360" is going to become the full standard for the future of connected, interactive living rooms. **THIS** is the end-game for both Wii and PS3.
