Project Scorpio supports FreeSync and next-gen HDMI

Last week, Digital Foundry published the hardware spec for Microsoft's next Xbox - Project Scorpio. However, there was one little detail we held back, an aspect of the new console we didn't want to get lost in the noise. In the here and now its applications will be limited, but in the fullness of time, it may help to bring about a profound shift in how displays interface with games hardware.

The BEAST keeps on giving. Noice!

I_am_Batman378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

This is one of my most wanted features for consoles. Now that Scorpio has it it's safe to assume that next gen consoles will have it as well which is great news.

TankCrossing378d ago

It will be interesting to see if/when any TV manufacturers bother to include it. It isn't a mandated part of the HDMI 2.1 spec.

ABizzel1378d ago

Scorpio is pretty much a PConsole.... just like I wanted and said it should be.

I want my check from both MS and Nintendo.

4Sh0w378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

Septic, your disagrees are strong on this site.

lol, I just dont get the "console war", if you're a gamer this is good news. I don't own a ps4pro but just because I didn't want one I still never found time to utter 1 bad word about it or jump on ps4pro reveal news to slam the disagree button I just thought "good for those who want a ps4pro".....meh, kids will be kids I guess.

-Ahhh, well just glad to see Microsoft is making a very nice upgrade over X1.

Unspoken378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

This feature sealed the deal! Day 1 purchase!

TV manufactures need to get a firmware update out to current TV's asap. I hope this can be done as it is a game changer in the industry.

This is arguably bigger than HDR, where you can directly see and feel the effects of the refresh rate. I can't wait to see this in action on a big screen TV.

feju378d ago

And Sony need to jump in and beat the mighty Scorpio with a next gen console?

darthv72378d ago

Pretty cool option. And since most monitors that support it use displayport... you should be able to use an hdmi to displayport adapter.

rainslacker378d ago

I think it'll be a while before TV makers support FreeSync. It's not really needed for TV or Blu-Ray movies. If it does come, it'll be on high end TV's. Maybe in the future it'll become more commonplace.

On the plus side, it doesn't require any kind of copy protection, and can be patched into any kind of HDMI controller that can be updated. Even on the TV end so long as the display can work with variable refresh rates.

This could be very advantageous for those that play on computer monitors though.

sampson3121378d ago

why people think it's a mid gen upgrade is f-ing beyond me.

frostypants378d ago

@TankCrossing, not sure why people are disagreeing with your fact...

frostypants378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

@sampson3121, this is why I think it's silly for people to compare it to the PS4 Pro. Scorpio is MS getting their foot into the next gen before anyone else (unless we count Switch, which I do not for a myriad of reasons).

darthv72378d ago

Seems HDMI 2.1 is a beast of a connection itself. 8k, 10k dynamic HDR...

starchild378d ago

I totally agree. After the HDMI 2.1 spec was released I knew it was inevitable that consoles would be getting support for variable refresh rates at some point. This is a great thing for consoles.

I have a Gsync monitor for my PC and it's one of the best things to ever come along for gaming, imo. Not having to worry about screen tearing, stuttering and added latency is a game changer.

To tell the truth consoles are getting to the point where I don't know if I will continue to bother with PC gaming. I mean, I love PC gaming and I know it still will offer advantages over consoles, but I'm getting to a point in my life where I don't have quite as much time for gaming and I just don't care quite as much about having the very best visuals and framerate possible.

With these upgraded consoles we are starting to get great image quality due to the higher resolutions. And if we can get smooth framerates thanks to variable refresh rate technology then I think I might be satisfied doing all my gaming on consoles. I'm not sure this is what I'll decide to do, but I definitely like the way consoles are going.

ShadowKnight377d ago

My bet is in the next refresh of PC video cards they will include the HDMI 2.1 standard, great for future proofing.

If Nvidia throws HDMI 2.1 in its next batch of Video cards I'll be upgrading my Gaming PC with it, since I play it on a 4k HDR TV & the Dynamic HDR + VRR variable refresh rate will be killer features for me

Unspoken377d ago

Hey Shadow, I'm not sure how nVidia will respond as they'll likely want to keep G-Sync, a proprietary variable refresh rate technology. They may not even support "FreeSync" as it'll cut into their bottom line.

TankCrossing377d ago

@Frostypants Ah, you must be new here. The N4G userbase can take some getting used to, but they're mostly harmless :)

*cough* and stupid *cough*

We're kinda on the same side, but I think consoles in general should just die and the big three should just setup their own online stores for PC. MS already has a head start there, but the point of saying this to you is what do you think?

Lennoxb63378d ago

So just f*ck everyone who can't afford build a PC right? lol

Paytaa378d ago

Yeah if consoles are no longer around then my enjoyment out of this hobby basically dies. PC gaming is cool, but not my bread and butter.

Bathyj378d ago

No thanks. I game on consoles because I prefer consoles. Why would I want them to die? Consoles drive gaming and have since Atari. PC should be buying Consoles a big fat Thank You cake for keeping gaming a viable, profitable industry that they get to benefit from.

Kun_ADR378d ago

Lol....your comment made my day. Consoles should just die (including handheld) so I can strap my enormous pc on my back and play games on the train.

NohansenBoy378d ago

Why do people still have 90s logic that gaming PCs still cost $2000 to get 10FPS in a game? Also, handheld and laptops are two things that's kinda hard to make modular so I don't think they should die, but making an open source solution would be nice.

I know I would get a lot of biased opinions on this console fanboy site and misinformation.

Pshh its a pc with a xbox logo slapped on it, it supports free sync. What is the only thing that has free sync? Monitorsssssssss no tvs

Why do you think they are porting new xbox games to windows 10?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm looks like a overhyped alienware pc release

Glad you like to buy pre built pc's now but thats a waste of money, just build it. Its not worth having a xbox logo on it.

Septic378d ago

You're not worthy of the BEAST

378d ago
Lennoxb63378d ago

Every console is a PC with its company's logo on it.

And a lot of mlg, streamers and content creators use a pc monitor so your logic is very invalid!

TV's will have this feature in the future but honestly freesync really isn't needed if you're just a gamer that plays at home with friends online's more catered for those competitive gamers or people that use the high end gear to show the best version of their games! Clearly a ridiculous expensive pc is over kill! Amd pcs have been wasting resources for years higher specs are a thing of the past it's why nvidia overprice their products to just sell you on a number!

freshslicepizza378d ago

lol, scorpio will play games just like the ps4 pro in a closed environment that console gamers like. dont get upset because it does more.

Nice feature. So, the last word have TV manufacturers.

butchertroll378d ago

LOL at disagree votes.

YOU NEED A TV WITH FREESYNC SUPPORT, idiots! There isn't any yet. So, the last word have TV manufactures.

XanderZane377d ago

We all know there will be FreeSync HDTV's out before the Scorpio even launches. PC monitors will probably be first. That's probably why he got so many disagrees. By the end of 2018, you won't have any problems finding an HDTV with HDMI 2.1 & FreeSync support. Not sure why anyone would think this to be an issue. Even if it didn't come out within the first year, we know that the Scorpio is already fully prepared for it; ahead of the competition.

PFFT378d ago

Cant wait for this Monster of a console! HYPE!

frostypants378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

Keeping in mind that you'll also need to get a TV that supports HDMI 2.1, with support for the **optional** dynamic refresh spec, *and* if you use an AV receiver you may need to upgrade that as well, unless Scorpio comes with an extra HDMI output so you can run one straight to the TV for video, and the other carry audio-only to the receiver. This would eliminate the need for what would be a very expensive receiver upgrade.

These HDMI refresh specs are happening way too often. I'm not knocking MS...they're just supporting what's available. It's the industry as a whole.

DarXyde378d ago

Forgive my skepticism, but "ensures no screen tearing" seems a bit fantastical. I would argue that it's on developers to ensure no screen tearing. The hardware is powerful enough that there's no reason it should ever have issues like that, but I'm not convinced the hardware itself can solve the issue of lazy developers and poor optimizations. I could be wrong, but that sounds like an exaggeration.

I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being 2017's answer to the 90's and their "skip proof" CD players.

donthate378d ago

There is a new beast in town. Gamers rejoice!!!

XanderZane377d ago

It keeps getting better and better, and I don't think that's even all the news yet on the Scorpio. I want to see some 3rd party game comparison with this feature turned on and running. I think DF is going to be real busy at the end of this year and beyond.

gangsta_red377d ago

Septic has over one hundred agrees? This is absolutely impossible, what is this, where everyone is using Netscape?

Nice. MS is future proofing this console and freesync supports 360 BC titles too. Amazing. Freesync enabled TVs won't be out until later this year or maybe sometime next year but it would be nice if MS partnered with LG or Samsung to get a couple ready for Scorpios launch.

I really can't wait for E3. MS is obviously holding back some cards for the event.

BecauseImBatman378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

I must say there really pulling out all the stops with Scorpio from a hardware standpoint. Scorpio is looking like a big leap in terms of technology from Xbox One. Now if they can show us the big benefit on Scorpio titles from Xbox One titles at E3 (and announce a few new games that will take advantage of the consoles power), the Scorpio could be of to a good start this year.

Free Sync is always something I wanted in consoles. Good Job Xbox Team.

XanderZane377d ago

Yes, I really didn't expect all of this. I'm blown away. I guess Rich L. was right when he said he hadn't told us everything about the Scorpio yet in his first hardware reveal. He said there was still much more to the Scorpio that still needed to be told. He wasn't wrong, that's for sure.

asmith2306378d ago

"BC titles too. Amazing." - not as amazing as having a shallow list of exclusives.

christocolus378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

Uh oh.... someone's not happy about Project Scorpio supporting freesync and next gen hdmi.

Well shouldn't you be playing that amazing list of exclusives instead of trolling a Xbox article? You Sony fanboys act like EVERY Sony exclusive is to die for when in reality most of them suck. MS has exclusives and come Nov will have the better multiplats which is what most gamers play anyway. Now I'll wait while you move the goal post from "power matters" to "power doesn't matter only exclusives do"

Gunstar75378d ago

It has titles that are "exclusive" to xbox and PC, and when it comes to the flame wars which you are so gladly participating in, that's all that's really matters - lol

hduce378d ago

The salt is prevalent with this one.

XanderZane377d ago

Someone is having a butthurt salty moment it seems. Let me know when you can play Sunset Overdrive, Halo 5, Forza Horizon 2, Rare Replay, Halo MCC , Crimson Dragon or D4 on other platforms. More exclusives are coming to XB1/Scorpio.

"We’re gonna have games only released on the PC. We’re gonna have games only released on console. And PC gaming is critically important to the company.”

PC only exclusives. XB1/Scorpio only exclusives. You insecure fanboys need to relax.

Microsoft put future proofing in this horrible abuse of console prowess.

All aboard the Scorpio train.

4k Freesync 4K assets Choo choo

nowitzki2004378d ago

wow.. some of you have completely lost it.

KionicWarlord222378d ago (Edited 378d ago )

As a PC gamer you know this is a good future proofing here for a console.

Saying I lost it is hilarious.

Gamers gonna be able to hook a free sync monitor right up to there scorpio.

This is sick.

Kun_ADR378d ago

Unlike those who touch themselves when ps4 pro was announced?

nowitzki2004377d ago (Edited 377d ago )

Im currently a PC and ps4 gamer. So for me PS4pro was no big deal, could've been perfectly fine without it.. Unlike some with other consoles, who cant wait for a much needed upgrade.

NatFanBoyRestricted372d ago (Edited 372d ago )

Nowziki2004?- Pc gamer he says, talking about people shouldn't be excited about new hardware. Your a joke. You get a PSPro, new hardware by the way, and your probably investing or going to invest in new hardware for your PC for it to matter that much to mention your a PC gamer. If your truly Pc gamer, it shouldn't take much to understand why someone would be excited about new hardware. You clearly know about it with that PSPRO. If your not here for the train, why do you care?
