Project Scorpio supports FreeSync and next-gen HDMI

Last week, Digital Foundry published the hardware spec for Microsoft's next Xbox - Project Scorpio. However, there was one little detail we held back, an aspect of the new console we didn't want to get lost in the noise. In the here and now its applications will be limited, but in the fullness of time, it may help to bring about a profound shift in how displays interface with games hardware.

The BEAST keeps on giving. Noice!

I_am_Batman129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

This is one of my most wanted features for consoles. Now that Scorpio has it it's safe to assume that next gen consoles will have it as well which is great news.

TankCrossing129d ago

It will be interesting to see if/when any TV manufacturers bother to include it. It isn't a mandated part of the HDMI 2.1 spec.

Scorpio is pretty much a PConsole.... just like I wanted and said it should be.

I want my check from both MS and Nintendo.

4Sh0w129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

Septic, your disagrees are strong on this site.

lol, I just dont get the "console war", if you're a gamer this is good news. I don't own a ps4pro but just because I didn't want one I still never found time to utter 1 bad word about it or jump on ps4pro reveal news to slam the disagree button I just thought "good for those who want a ps4pro".....meh, kids will be kids I guess.

-Ahhh, well just glad to see Microsoft is making a very nice upgrade over X1.

Unspoken129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

This feature sealed the deal! Day 1 purchase!

TV manufactures need to get a firmware update out to current TV's asap. I hope this can be done as it is a game changer in the industry.

This is arguably bigger than HDR, where you can directly see and feel the effects of the refresh rate. I can't wait to see this in action on a big screen TV.

feju129d ago

And Sony need to jump in and beat the mighty Scorpio with a next gen console?

darthv72129d ago

Pretty cool option. And since most monitors that support it use displayport... you should be able to use an hdmi to displayport adapter.

rainslacker129d ago

I think it'll be a while before TV makers support FreeSync. It's not really needed for TV or Blu-Ray movies. If it does come, it'll be on high end TV's. Maybe in the future it'll become more commonplace.

On the plus side, it doesn't require any kind of copy protection, and can be patched into any kind of HDMI controller that can be updated. Even on the TV end so long as the display can work with variable refresh rates.

This could be very advantageous for those that play on computer monitors though.

sampson3121129d ago

why people think it's a mid gen upgrade is f-ing beyond me.

frostypants129d ago

@TankCrossing, not sure why people are disagreeing with your fact...

frostypants129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

@sampson3121, this is why I think it's silly for people to compare it to the PS4 Pro. Scorpio is MS getting their foot into the next gen before anyone else (unless we count Switch, which I do not for a myriad of reasons).

darthv72129d ago

Seems HDMI 2.1 is a beast of a connection itself. 8k, 10k dynamic HDR...

starchild128d ago

I totally agree. After the HDMI 2.1 spec was released I knew it was inevitable that consoles would be getting support for variable refresh rates at some point. This is a great thing for consoles.

I have a Gsync monitor for my PC and it's one of the best things to ever come along for gaming, imo. Not having to worry about screen tearing, stuttering and added latency is a game changer.

To tell the truth consoles are getting to the point where I don't know if I will continue to bother with PC gaming. I mean, I love PC gaming and I know it still will offer advantages over consoles, but I'm getting to a point in my life where I don't have quite as much time for gaming and I just don't care quite as much about having the very best visuals and framerate possible.

With these upgraded consoles we are starting to get great image quality due to the higher resolutions. And if we can get smooth framerates thanks to variable refresh rate technology then I think I might be satisfied doing all my gaming on consoles. I'm not sure this is what I'll decide to do, but I definitely like the way consoles are going.

ShadowKnight128d ago

My bet is in the next refresh of PC video cards they will include the HDMI 2.1 standard, great for future proofing.

If Nvidia throws HDMI 2.1 in its next batch of Video cards I'll be upgrading my Gaming PC with it, since I play it on a 4k HDR TV & the Dynamic HDR + VRR variable refresh rate will be killer features for me

Unspoken128d ago

Hey Shadow, I'm not sure how nVidia will respond as they'll likely want to keep G-Sync, a proprietary variable refresh rate technology. They may not even support "FreeSync" as it'll cut into their bottom line.

TankCrossing128d ago

@Frostypants Ah, you must be new here. The N4G userbase can take some getting used to, but they're mostly harmless :)

*cough* and stupid *cough*

We're kinda on the same side, but I think consoles in general should just die and the big three should just setup their own online stores for PC. MS already has a head start there, but the point of saying this to you is what do you think?

Lennoxb63129d ago

So just f*ck everyone who can't afford build a PC right? lol

Paytaa129d ago

Yeah if consoles are no longer around then my enjoyment out of this hobby basically dies. PC gaming is cool, but not my bread and butter.

Bathyj128d ago

No thanks. I game on consoles because I prefer consoles. Why would I want them to die? Consoles drive gaming and have since Atari. PC should be buying Consoles a big fat Thank You cake for keeping gaming a viable, profitable industry that they get to benefit from.

Kun_ADR128d ago

Lol....your comment made my day. Consoles should just die (including handheld) so I can strap my enormous pc on my back and play games on the train.

NohansenBoy128d ago

Why do people still have 90s logic that gaming PCs still cost $2000 to get 10FPS in a game? Also, handheld and laptops are two things that's kinda hard to make modular so I don't think they should die, but making an open source solution would be nice.

I know I would get a lot of biased opinions on this console fanboy site and misinformation.

Pshh its a pc with a xbox logo slapped on it, it supports free sync. What is the only thing that has free sync? Monitorsssssssss no tvs

Why do you think they are porting new xbox games to windows 10?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm looks like a overhyped alienware pc release

Glad you like to buy pre built pc's now but thats a waste of money, just build it. Its not worth having a xbox logo on it.

Septic129d ago

You're not worthy of the BEAST

129d ago
Lennoxb63129d ago

Every console is a PC with its company's logo on it.

And a lot of mlg, streamers and content creators use a pc monitor so your logic is very invalid!

TV's will have this feature in the future but honestly freesync really isn't needed if you're just a gamer that plays at home with friends online's more catered for those competitive gamers or people that use the high end gear to show the best version of their games! Clearly a ridiculous expensive pc is over kill! Amd pcs have been wasting resources for years higher specs are a thing of the past it's why nvidia overprice their products to just sell you on a number!

moldybread128d ago

lol, scorpio will play games just like the ps4 pro in a closed environment that console gamers like. dont get upset because it does more.

christocolus128d ago

Lmao XD.. Is this post for real?

Well this is a freaking good news!!

butchertroll129d ago

Nice feature. So, the last word have TV manufacturers.

butchertroll128d ago

LOL at disagree votes.

YOU NEED A TV WITH FREESYNC SUPPORT, idiots! There isn't any yet. So, the last word have TV manufactures.

XanderZane128d ago

We all know there will be FreeSync HDTV's out before the Scorpio even launches. PC monitors will probably be first. That's probably why he got so many disagrees. By the end of 2018, you won't have any problems finding an HDTV with HDMI 2.1 & FreeSync support. Not sure why anyone would think this to be an issue. Even if it didn't come out within the first year, we know that the Scorpio is already fully prepared for it; ahead of the competition.
