Most games open with bombast, from Halo's tense opening moments as Master Chief shoots his way out of the Pillar of Autumn to Uncharted's ocean-bound fire-fight or Call of Duty 4's similarly fraught pre-credits storming of a freight ship. Far Cry 2, however, is a little bit different in this respect. One of the first things it does is give you malaria. It's a bold conceit, and one that's indicative of Far Cry 2's determination to not play by the rulebook.
A traipse through the first few hours of the single-player campaign revealed a game that's not short on ambition, but equally harboring a fair share of potential frustration for those weened on more linear shooting thrills.
