Debunking the supposed link between sexism and video games

A recent article came out by a collaboration force of Iowa State University, University Grenoble Alpes and Universite Savoie Mont Blanc of France talking about sexism and video game exposure in adolescents. Well, what's so special about it then? Yes, you guessed it. The article is biased to the max. So here's my (Justin Easler, TGG) take on the matter.

If someone says video games cause you to be a sexist, then turns around and says that violent games don't make you violent, they're a damn hypocrite. They either influence you or they don't, you don't get to cherry pick your pet issues while ignoring the others.

It's also worth pointing out that the "issues" with Gaming have changed over time, from causing crimes, violent behavior to being sexist. So imo, it's just like Queen Anita and her cheery picking videos.

Simon_the_sorcerer481d ago

True, but I wonder for how many more years she will be able to do that?

That is who these people work, think and work...I mean, just look at Anita, she's been doing exactly that for years.

TGG_overlord481d ago

I think that their time is up, because more and more Gamers are starting to get fed up with nonsense "research" articles such as that one (it's biased as hell, because they just cherry picked for the results that they wanted to get).

I don't think people can become violent or sexist if they weren't before 'cos of videogames, but you have to admit that some videogames aren't exactly helping to remove the stereotypes...

Sometimes things are done because it appeals to the majority of the consumers, ie. men, even with 2B from Nier, yes, she's a strong female character, but why is she dressed like that? It's not that it's bad per se but if one is already sexist this isn't going to help change that. Dunno if removing these kinds of things from videogames would help changing minds either, it might, but is difficult to test for such a thing...

bluefox755481d ago (Edited 481d ago )

Do you think they "should" try and remove the stereotypes? If there is no issue, why pretend there is to appeal to a subset of misinformed, perpetually outraged people? I dunno, I don't think there's some moral imperative for video game devs to cure sexism. If they choose to try, fine, more power to them. But I think if a developer wants skimpy, sexy, girls in his game, that's fine too. Since we all agree that video games don't cause sexism or any other -ism.

Agreed if someone is saying that.

I actually believed to a degree it would have to be true.

If somebody has a violent nature and video games influence them to do these type of things and clearly they could be influenced by anything.

Wait, so they only asked ONE question? That's beyond retarded...

TGG_overlord481d ago

That would be correct, they only asked one single question, then they based their whole article on the answers they got from that one question...

College research doesn't require too much effort.

TGG_overlord481d ago

@Simon_the_sorcerer "True, but I wonder for how many more years she will be able to do that?"

Her views are going down on Youtube, and she's get less and less gigs. So my guess would be a year or two at max.

I couldn't believe some of the nasty comments people were making about Cindy from FFXV just because she's sexy. Sexism goes both ways you know. Sometimes it's just gross what people say about sexy video game characters. It shows off what kind of person THEY really are.

AnubisG481d ago

Usually when they talk about sexism, they only talk about woman in video games and point at them to show you how sexy they are. Yet, they forget to point at the extremely muscular man in video games. Isn't it funny, that only woman get offended? It's because they are hyper conscious about their bodies as opposed to man. Woman have this jealousy which is why we get the sexist argument all the time. It's basically the same argument that you get from your wife or girlfriend when you look at other woman. I'm pretty sure all this just comes from the jealousy of woman. They don't want you looking at beautiful virtual woman and that's that. And you have these white knights backing them up because they csn't get laid....and the funny part is, they won't because it has been shown that it is not an attractive trait in men.

"Usually when they talk about sexism, they only talk about woman in video games and point at them to show you how sexy they are. Yet, they forget to point at the extremely muscular man in video games."

- Correct, that's why I intend to write about it ;)

" It's basically the same argument that you get from your wife or girlfriend when you look at other woman. I'm pretty sure all this just comes from the jealousy of woman. They don't want you looking at beautiful virtual woman and that's that."

- The truth of the day.

" And you have these white knights backing them up because they csn't get laid....and the funny part is, they won't because it has been shown that it is not an attractive trait in men."

- The cucks/SJW "males" hope to get some action by defending those who drop Queen Anita-like articles such as this one, and that's all there is to it.
