The launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda and the discussion of its facial animations calls to mind another controversy surrounding Mass Effect 3 and its unsatisfying ending.

Mass effect 3s ending was one of the laziest excuses of an ending I've ever witnessed

Relientk772590d ago

The ending for Rage, was really lazy and underwhelming as well.

chrisx2590d ago

Yea can't forget that poor final boss fight too

InTheZoneAC2589d ago

really? I've played that game very sparingly but enjoyed what I've seen. Always wanted to go back and beat it, where I'm at I couldn't even tell you what I would expect from the end, have no idea what may happen or who/what is involved.

Number-Nine2589d ago

The facial expressions were caused by ME3's ending

ziggurcat2589d ago

The only reason why people were upset was because they actually thought that their "choices" would cause some ridiculous butterfly effect that resulted in a completely customized ending that only they would receive, not realizing that it's a video game - which sends you down an already-determined, prescribed path. Choice in any game is an illusion to make people think they have any kind of say in the final result.

joab7772589d ago

Not me. I wouldn't have cared if it were the culmination of my choices or not, though it would make the most sense! They had one of the best premises in video game lore, and the possibilities were unreal! Instead we got a simple, shallow ending! Terrible!

ziggurcat2589d ago (Edited 2589d ago )

The possibilities weren't unreal, though. There was only ever three possible outcomes.

gamer11382589d ago

1. Mass Effect players didn't just think that, they were told that repeatedly by Bioware. How dare they call out a dev for making promises and claims they would fail to back up, huh?
2. Way to generalise all video games by saying they all send you down a predetermined path which is just plain wrong. It was actually Bioware's choice not to figure out a way to do it rather than it actually being impossible.

ziggurcat2588d ago

@gamer:

1. yes, they did. I was involved in a lot of the discussions. they weren't promised anything.

2. I hate to burst your bubble, but video games are just lines of code. they're not organic entities that will adapt, and evolve as you progress. so... yes... they send you down a pre-determined path. it was not Bioware's "choice not to figure out a way", it was gamers' delusion that somehow convinced them that their choices in that video game would actually have some tangible impact on its ending.

JBlaze2262588d ago

Ziggurcat the problem with me3 ending is their all the same. Same animations, same outcome, just different character swap. They could have made different outcomes during that final battle

The ending of me3 with all the heat they got and the fact they re did that ending because of the feedback it should have made this new "trilogy" alot better than the old ones also it should have put it in a situation that understands the fan base and there standards.

But me4 showed the direction they are going in even more a old frostbite engine cheap throw away dev teams with micro transactions.

Alot of ea games this gen has pissed/shit on the old ea titles/teams even the bf games are a shadow of there former shelves.

Oh lets not forget all ea sports games will be using frostbite yeah good idea use a engine that was never designed for sports.

joab7772589d ago

It's not even close. I am loving Andromeda and if they patch the eyes and a few other things, well then that's cool. But to create such a shallow ending to what had the potential to be one of the coolest, most philosophical, complex and interesting endings in video game history...Was a tragedy!

houyi1112589d ago

it is not only that.. but also 1) almost all the mainline reviews said nothing bad about the endings before release, some of them even vaguely said me3 was the epic conclusion of the trilogy. 2) the response to the first wave of criticisms from the fans are: you only want happy ending; you are entitled brat; you hate the game because you are antigay; this is our artistic version. At that time the whole game industry were defending it, and it caused so much rage for me at that time. I didn't even care the "new" endings. The original endings are a rushed, unfinished, laziest mess, NO WAY AROUND IT imo.

Slowbro2588d ago

just think that ending made bioware move the game to another galaxy...just gonna let that set in for a bit

I don't understand how that could be even a question. I've been gaming for many years and that sort of animation could cause such a knee jerk reaction (if not fake) among gamers is mind blowing.
Only ND managed to make believe the characters are alive with some witchery of theirs. About all other games have perceived weirdness in their characters.

InTheZoneAC2589d ago

humans in andromeda look goofy af

the next one, if there is any, should just eliminate humans from the universe.

joab7772589d ago

It add other species as options. They will figure it out!

joab7772589d ago

The humans are bad, but I made my characters look pretty good. Whether they patch or not, this is a damn good game! It is Mass Effect for sure and Im loving it!

OB1Biker2589d ago (Edited 2589d ago )

Oh at times it can look cartoony or goofy or even some glitches but it's not all the time like some make it to believe. Maybe I'm part of gamers who prefer soft doll like animation rather than mechanical unexpressive animation of previous ME?
In anycase it's vastly overblown and I'm sure some people will come to play it later and think 'it's been fixed' while it's the same. Read a piece the other day the reviewer was saying it's completely overblown and not that bad was supposed to be the piece topic then he came to say they look like 'monsters' and if you can look past that blah blah. Shows how they troll people. He also said Liam crackd a silly joke and so afterwards he never used him again as squadmate. A reviewer just giving up using a character for a joke. Really?

Of what I'm sure is many were not even noticing anything wrong in streams I watched before the crying and only mentioned it after

OB1Biker2589d ago (Edited 2589d ago )

I'm not saying it looks great. It's uneven, hit and miss. They make it the big deal it's not though and here utterly ridiculous compare it to ME3 awful ending everyone was bitching about but now people around here say ME3 was the best thing ever because it got 9 on meta
Now instead of focusing on the gameplay and every other thing people scrutinise the animation while nobody would really if it wasn't for the fuss. I certainly don't focus on animation in the game

Bathyj2589d ago

C'mon, thats like comparing rotten apples to rotten oranges.

morganfell2589d ago

True. But they tossed out the rotten oranges and gave gamers the choice of some new fruit. However the world is stuck with those rotten Andromeda apples.

Derceto2589d ago

They were equally bad, and the pivotal point of where BioWare started circling the drain and dying its slow death.

The launch games were all right, but look at how Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA compared to their re-releases.

Mass Effect Companions, Ranked from Worst to Best

From Xfire: "BioWare's Mass Effect franchise took gamers on a fascinating universal sci-fi journey that will never be forgotten. While fighting against the ever-looming threat of the Reapers was central to Mass Effect's storyline, what made the series so iconic was its vast and diverse cast of characters.

Not only do these companions accompany Commander Shepard as you make your way through hell and back, but, throughout your journey, you also get to learn who these characters were and are and what they think about what it is that you are doing. Some will even fall in love with you, and others will even become your enemy based on your decision."

sourOG1077d ago

When I looked at the list I thought they were saying Garrus was the worst lol. And tali being so far down the list was fighting words for me. But the numbered list is just the order they are shown so you are forgiven.

CYALTR1076d ago

I think they listed them from worst to best. Also keep in mind that this includes Andromeda characters that aren't part of the remastered trilogy. Interesting refresh on the characters though.

sourOG1076d ago

They did but I didn’t realize it until I started reading. That’s just the order they are shown.

Knightofelemia1077d ago (Edited 1077d ago )

I couldn't stand Miranda I could never like her as a character and I always skipped Jacob and James. I always liked Grunt, Jack, Legion, Tali, Garrus, Samara, Liara, Wrex, Edi, Zaeed, Kasumi I always use these characters. Using Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man just fits the character like using Keith David as Admiral Anderson was another good choice always feels like Goliath from Gargoyles is yelling at you which I like.

Rebel_Scum1076d ago

Kinda weird having a question mark at the end of that sentence?

Soy1076d ago

Garrus is best space bro.

Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021

Zahi AR. from Link Cable Gaming writes “Welcome back Link Cable Gaming fans, with me in andromeda. Specifically, Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021. With the recent announcement of Anthem shutting down its future plans, I wanted to look at another recent BioWare game. My switch to a PlayStation 5 destroyed my save file right while I was at the end. So, I decided to do a fresh start on the new console to see just how well (or not) it’s been since launch. How has the new generation of hardware treated the game that fell from grace? Should you play Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021? Let’s find out.”

Such a good game! It got a 4K X1X upgrade and it looks fantastic! Also like the story! Was playing it again before Series X dropped. Going to download it for the Series X, as soon as I have more room on my HD. Playing too many other games right now.

Instant resume is AMAZING! I can Switch between 5 games in seconds. Like 10 to 15 at the most! No closing a game and opening another one! Thank you Microsoft!

giovonni1142d ago

It’s was decent to me. I didn’t feel the magic I felt when I played two or even three. I don’t know. It was repetitive, and the worlds felt bland.

jeromeface1142d ago

There's a reason it reviewed so poorly in the first place... these reasons among others.

anast1142d ago

I had a lot of fun with this game, but I haven't played 2 or 3 yet.

giovonni1142d ago

2 was wonderful, three was just as good as two the ending though 🤦🏾‍♂️

Wintersun6161141d ago

I finally gave it a go last autumn and was amazed by how bad a game can be. And believe me my expectations were low. After 10ish hours I just had to give up.

giovonni1141d ago

I powered through it, myself. It was just repetitive, and the Land Rover Exploration wasn’t interesting at all. The story also we mahhhhhhh.
