It feels like you can buy everything extra for this machine, except games. Controller grips, screen protectors, carry case, AC Adapter, even the ethernet port and wrist straps. Seriously why would you need to buy wrists straps (for AU$14) Are the ones that come with it just destined to break?

Nintendo is trying to extract the maximum possible amount from their loyal fans before the system flops, unfortunately that will happen much sooner than they planned. All those accessories are a huge ripoff.

Sounds like you're doing some wishful thinking with the "before the system flops" talk. You should quit the pretense with the "unfortunately that will happen much sooner" and just go full console warrior and just get hard at daydreaming about that, bud. Then again, being a console warrior/fanboy towards a soulless corporation and hating the competition (even though competition is good for the industry) is encouraged on this site. Very pathetic community here, N4G has.

@ Phil32 - And yet my point still stands, which is that the accessories for the Switch are a huge ripoff. And I'm not a "console warrior/fanboy towards a soulless corporation and hating the competition", I own many, many consoles including: NES, SNES, GBA, N64, Atari 7800, Dreamcast, Saturn, Genesis, PS1, PS2, PS3, Neo Geo, XBox, XBox 360, PS4, XB1, etc. I simply recognize that most of Nintendo's modern day consoles have been poorly designed and lacking in even the most basic features found in competing systems. The Switch is just more proof that Nintendo has completely lost touch with what gamers want in a modern piece of gaming hardware. And based on the dismal early 3rd party support, it's unlikely that the system will succeed, sadly.

It's like the Wii all over again with its Wiimote holders, pads, boards and whatnot. This time, however, retailers and Nintendo are marketing such products as "essentials".

That's pretty much with anything portable, ps it comes with a adapter and wrist straps.

Every console launches with a plethora of accessories. The concept isn't exclusive to the Switch. And you don't need to buy wrist straps unless you lose the ones that come with your system.
