It’s been a long wait for actual details on Sonic Forces, formally known as Project Sonic 2017. SEGA finally lifted the curtain at a SXSW panel today by sharing a bit of gameplay and details.

I wonder what the third playstyle will be

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2590d ago

Maybe something more open instead of a straight path.
Like the Knuckles and Rogue levels in Adventure 2/Battle.

bouzebbal2590d ago (Edited 2590d ago )

OMG Sonic what have they done to you.
It is so painful.. Colors was unplayable and had animations even Genesis version had better ones.
Movements are so unprecise. Sonic nowadays feels like a rhythm game, more than a platformer..
Now they come up with one more title with yet the same gameplay.
They could have called it Sonic Unleashed 2 or something, it is exactly the same gameplay.
SEGA have completely lost it.. I'm waiting for the other 2D Sonic (forgot the name of it). Looks much more promising, and it is not made by SEGA and feels better than SH4.

instead of 3 gameplay styles, how about perfecting ONE of them and finally give this series the attention it deserves.

Neoprime2590d ago

Nah, probably some new style they thought up. Classic ->, Modern ->, New.

SarcasticDuck2590d ago

the third playstyle won't be about camera angle, probably more about gameplay. Beat'em up like Unleashed or puzzle driven or something like that.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2590d ago

@Isashi
that what i am talking. I didn't say anything about camera.
I am talking more about open areas similar to what Super Mario 64 does.

porkChop2590d ago

Yeah, I really don't know. They've got classic Sonic from the side, and modern Sonic from behind. First person? Bird's-eye view? I can't think of many ways they could do Sonic gameplay.

andrewsquall2590d ago

Maybe because 2D is actually the only one we need and is the only one countlessly PROVEN to work.

The 10th Rider2590d ago

@andrewsquall,

Not really, there's been decent 3D Sonic games, and there's been some poor 2D Sonic games. Neither is foolproof.

deathtok2590d ago

Sonic Spinball style confirmed.

-Foxtrot2590d ago

Why not just create a game like the classic Sonic levels

I don't see how plot wise they can bring back past and present Sonic once again

The 10th Rider2590d ago

Maybe I'm missing what you mean, but isn't Sonic Mania a game like the classic Sonic levels?

-Foxtrot2590d ago

Oh I know that but I mean with the graphics we saw in Sonic Generations

Mania looks awesome but it's basically remixed versions of the older game levels

The 10th Rider2589d ago (Edited 2589d ago )

Alright, makes sense. That occurred to me but it still sounded like a weird thing to say considering Sonic Mania's upcoming release.

With Sonic Mania, I think that'd be a bit redundant. Sonic can't keep relying on 2D games and both Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations were decent games, so I don't think expanding on the 3D gameplay is a bad idea. The way I see it is that if they drop all the gimmicks (like the 'colors' in Colors, the 'werehog' in Unleashed, the Sword in Sonic and the Black Knight) and focus on refining the core gameplay and putting out solid level design, they should be able to come out with something pretty good. Though, from the sound of things the 'three gameplay styles' doesn't bode well for that.

agent132590d ago

Sonic forces looks so good, just like sonic generations. actually i like 3D sonic games more than 2D ones.

Project Sonic 2017 has a name: Sonic Forces

Is Sonic going to be a part of some force that includes his supporting cast playing major roles in the story again

The 10th Rider2590d ago

They also said it's following in the footsteps of Colors and Generations . . . Both of which are just below an 8 on Metacritic. Might not be a great game, but this should at least be a good one.

For those wondering, they showed a brief gameplay clip that's currently only available off-screen. The non-off screen version is being made available tomorrow morning.

StormLegend2590d ago

From what I've seen from the few seconds of gameplay, it reminds me of Unleashed and that's not a good thing.

The 10th Rider2590d ago

It's not that bad. Sonic Unleashed still has a 6/10 on Metacritic . . . And it was the nighttime levels that were truly horrendous. I played Unleashed and yes it was horrid, but the daytime levels were it's saving grace. If it was just daytime levels it easily would have been a 7/10, which isn't great, but it's perfectly enjoyable. Either way, they stated in the stream that the gameplay is Generations/Colors, both of which were received well.

mastiffchild2590d ago

Colors winds me up. Sure, its way better than most recent Sonic games but, aside from the odd DS title and Generations we kind of knew most would be pants. Colours was.different, had.some cool ideas and yet they still only managed a decent game when , for once, it could have been really good.

Im still a sucker for Sonic, though, so no doubt Ill be on board twice this year.

Asuka2590d ago

why couldnt it be Sonic Adventure 3

georeo2590d ago

We are asking to much lol.

PhoenixUp2590d ago

Sonic '06 is basically Sonic Adventure 3 in all but name but definitely in structure

Blu3_Berry2590d ago

Saw some off-screen footage, and I am very happy it's similar to generations. That was probably my favorite sonic game in the last 10 years so I hope this will be good.

Can't wait to see Sonic 2017. Don't why it took long for them to show it. Probably because Sonic has a much much large fanbase with Nintendo so they waited for the Switch to be fully revealed.

lxtrxi2622d ago

I'm excited for both titles. Should be a great year for Sonic fans.

ZeekQuattro2621d ago

Didn't think of it like that. I thought it was odd that Sega quick to say that 3D Sonic was coming to the Switch but were quiet about Sonic Mania coming to the system.

FallenAngel19842621d ago

I was hoping Sonic Mania would release in March

Blu3_Berry2621d ago

So excited for Sonic 2017. I loved Generations and Unleashed with the daytime levels so I hope it's in the vein of those games. Lost World was pretty meh and I found it overly frustrating with the movement. And let's not get started on Boom.

Darkfist_Flames2621d ago (Edited 2621d ago )

Lets see what kind of F***up gameplay theyr gona introduce.

SegaGamer2621d ago (Edited 2621d ago )

Being a massive Sonic fan, i am very much looking forward to both games. Hopefully they don't try and reinvent the gameplay in Project Sonic 2017 and just stick to what works like we got with Generations.

I'm also hoping for more of serious tone to the storyline this time around too. Recent Sonic games have been a bit too kiddy friendly too me, i much preferred the more serious tone that we got in the Adventure games.

The comeback of 3D platformers in 2017

If you grew up gaming in the mid-to-late Nineties or early 2000s, there’s no way you could have avoided the 3D platformer. Those were the days: Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, Banjo-Kazooie, Spyro, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper. Heck, even Gex, Croc and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger weren’t that bad. Somewhere around the mid-2000s, though, the genre was over-saturated with low-quality movie tie-ins and sub-par clones, making it hard to see the wood from the trees. Obviously, there's the odd Mario platformer or HD remake to tide fans over – as well as some promising releases last year, such as the Ratchet and Clank remake – but publishers and developers wrongly assumed that consumers have all moved on from the genre. Until now. here are five reasons that prove 2017 will mark the revival of the 3D platformer.

Can't wait to get back into these games. Little tired of FPS

PlayableGamez-2636d ago

Tell me about it. I am tired of shooters in general.
Right now I am playing Yakuza 0, Gravity Rush 2, Super Mario 3D World, and I hoped on Minecraft with my buddy this weekend. It has been a blast.

Erik73572636d ago

Really want to get Yakuza 0 and Gravity Rush 2!

Retroman2636d ago (Edited 2636d ago )

Tell me about it. She-it. i was tired of fps back in 2006 on ps3 after finishing Call of Duty i was done with fps . it was ok for First time tryer, but not to make permanent daily gaming . Right now I'm playing Rayman Legend, injustice gods among us, R&C ,Knack ,Super Street Fighter 5 , Project cars,Drive Club, J-stars victory ,
Gran Turismo Sport when release . F1 2016, Dirt Rally , Madden 2015
Tired of open world Only games as well .

FallenAngel19842637d ago

3D platformers have always been around in some form

The 10th Rider2637d ago (Edited 2637d ago )

Yeah, but there's no denying they underwent a major decline after the PS2 era and now we're seeing a resurgence. Yooka-Laylee, Mario Odyssey, the Untitled Sonic, and Knack 2 all this year is great.

Platformgamer2635d ago

And crash n sane trilogy :)

TheSuperior 2637d ago

Its been a good long while since I've played a 3D platformer that I loved. I hope 2017 changes that.

PhoenixUp2637d ago

Are you implying that despite the various awesome 3D platformers we've had in recent years prior to 2017 that the genre was somehow dead

FullmetalRoyale2637d ago

They used to rule the roost. Having them reemerge is great, but they are far from king.

RosweeSon2637d ago

And not a sniff of Banjo 3 rare/microsoft what are you all doing.
