Sony Isn't Releasing a Vita Successor, but Nintendo Is

GameRevolution: "Long before its official reveal, Nintendo Switch (and before that, Nintendo NX) was leaked and rumored to be something known as a “hybrid console.” This term, as was eventually learned, refers to a device that can be plugged-in and docked to a livingroom setup in the traditional manner, or brought on the go in a way that normally requires an entirely separate device. Taking this line of thought so far as to actually develop a hybrid device is new and novel, but the concept itself is not. And this concept up until very recently had no greater champion than a direct Nintendo competitor: Sony."

Nothing about the Switch make it a Vita successor.

wonderfulmonkeyman296d ago

I'd almost argue that the number of good RPG's hitting it is reminiscent of the Vita, though.

novacav296d ago

True and once 3DS RPG devs move to Switch even moreso. And then maybe even Vita RPG devs will move (or release for both).

Agreed.

Square support is huge ie Dragon Quest.

I see Switch getting Persona 5 in the future too.

It has 1 screen so, that's that.

There's lots of similarities to the PlayStation Vita in regards to the build and also in regards to the hardware being on par with the previous platform similar to how the PSP was on par if not more powerful than the PlayStation 2.

I would say the only difference is that I could notice are simply based on moot Points of Power

The reality is we don't really know how powerful the next PSP would be in comparison to the switch for all we know if Nintendo never released to switch the next PSP very well could have been the exact same power.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory295d ago

No.
That all 3DS.
Shin Megami Tensei main series
Project Octopath Traveler - Bravely Defualt Developer
Tales of - 3DS got Abyss

Not only that the only JRPG you can make that claim for is I am Setsuna.

oldmess296d ago

I see at least 5 games that say otherwise:

- The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+ (Rebirth was one of the best and most notable PS Plus titles on the Vita)
- I Am Setsuna (Vita version never made it to the West, allegedly because of long loading times)
- Disgaea 5: Complete Edition (Vita got the definitive editions of Disgaea 3 and 4, but 5 was too demanding for the hardware, according to the devs)
- Puyo Puyo Tetris (another Vita game that never made it to the West, although it was very well reviewed in Japan)
- Blazblue (one of the highest rated fighting game series on the Vita is already confirmed for the Switch as well)

And this is just what we already know, before the console is even out! It's clear that the Switch is very well positioned to carry the status of portable indie/JRPG machine that Vita had. Only this time we'll have Nintendo first party games on top of that... :)

_-EDMIX-_296d ago

Agreed

from what I'm seeing it is definitely powerful enough to support those titles.

I would say the biggest similarity what have to come from the build in regards to it having one screen and the ability to out to a television using a dock like the original PSP had

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory295d ago

Puyo Puyo Tetris was on Wii U as well and PS4 and other platform
The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+ is on other platforms

- I Am Setsuna and Disgaea 5 was on PS4
- Blazblue was on 3DSD as well other PS system

Nothing Vita exclusive is on the platform .

On one hand you got everything great about the vita being copied, on the other hand, ps vita was not made by nintendo lol.

Kaneki-Ken296d ago

Other sites already made clickbaits about vita is dead because switch BS
Different patforms end of the story

the only thing VITA and switch have in common is they were both destined to be commercial failures

The vita is the greatest handheld system ever.

Chaos_Order296d ago

I dunno about the best ever, but I agree it's an awesome handheld that I'm so glad I bought.

littlefatgirl296d ago

Come on, Gameboy Advanced and Color were both better in their time than Vita is now. Heck, I'd argue the 3Ds has it better already. Nintendo owns the handheld market.

awdevoftw296d ago

the Gameboy is better because it owns the handheld market? true, that makes it more accessible, but that's like saying windows 10 is the greatest OS ever, because a lot of people have it. everything the switch is now, is what the vita had 4 years ago. granted, the switch has some improvements over the vita, but that is because it is new. the only strength that Nintendo had in the handheld department was that it was the only player in the game that companies released games for. and, to be honest, the "great games" for any iteration of the Gameboy are far and few between, unless you love their IPs. I never understood the success of the 3DS, although it has a couple of great games for it. the screens are too small and blurry and the control system is terrible, unless you buy the new new 3ds. even then, lol @ the nub.
