Here’s Why Despite All the Changes, Breath of the Wild is the Essence of Zelda

For seemingly the first time in Zelda history, the inventor and creator of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto, and current series producer, Eji Aonuma, are in agreement that a certain game is the pure essence of the Zelda series. That game is Breath of the Wild. While Breath of the Wild is certainly a game tha...

Well excuse me princess, but I haven't seen Link in his iconic green tunic yet. This can't be Zelda!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the anti-Breath of the Wild

Polygon: "To get back to the way Ocarina made us feel, it was necessary to reject almost everything about it."

Ocarina of Time changed my life forever, such a masterpiece

Zeldafan64123d ago

Hard to believe it's 25 years old already.

Cacabunga123d ago

The feeling this game gave me the first time i had my hands on it is indescribable.. i still get the chill from that day..
botw is like a spin off of the series.. it’s fun but with many flaws and the most important which is Zelda formula isn’t there..

FinalFantasyFanatic122d ago

I can't even remember how many times I played through OoT, I finished that game, and collected everything so many times.

Vits123d ago

I generally agree with the author here. However, if I had to point out a single game as the 'anti-Breath of the Wild,' that would be Majora's Mask. Pretty much everything in that game is interconnected, relies on something that the player must have done previously, is timed, and can be considered a puzzle in itself.

but still considered the best of the seties.

i would have liked botw to be more like ocarina.

25 years from today whatever Zelda is out people would too be looking fondly at Breath of the Wild.

Ah the more simple times of the 2020s.

So, Which Zelda Games Aren't On Switch Yet?

"Thanks to the wonders of the Nintendo Switch Online retro games libraries (and some pretty top-notch remasters along the way), the Switch is now home to a whopping 16 different Zelda titles by our count, covering everything from Link's first outing to his latest adventures, plus remakes, remasters and spin-offs." -Jim Norman of Nintendolife

Still odd Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HDs still haven't been ported yet unless they're doing GC for NSO.

closed_account266d ago (Edited 266d ago )

Yea, currently Windwaker HD is my only huge regret left of not owning a WiiU. Seeing as how they brought most everything else major, I'm confident they will. The Starfox game is another missing game, but it never looked that good to me compared to the rest of the series.

-Foxtrot267d ago

I really can't believe they haven't done a remake of Ocarina of Time, or at least use the 3DS version as a jumping off point.

closed_account266d ago (Edited 266d ago )

Yes!! An Ocarina remake would sell like hotcakes, and once it's proven sales, a Majora's mask remake would be a shoe-in bc of the nature of its many shared assets.

FinalFantasyFanatic265d ago

Seems like a sure seller to me, I'm surprised that Zelda's anniversary was so bare bones, I was really hyped for some sort of HD collection that had may/may not include OoT, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker.

-Foxtrot265d ago

Yeah it was super lacklustre for the anniversary

Even some kind of old school collection I’d have liked to see

Links Awakening
A Link to the Past
The Minish Cap
Oracle of Seasons / Ages
