Resident Evil 4's contributions to horror gaming were both innovative and harmful for the genre.
While not traditional horror resident evil 4 is an awesome game and stands well even today
this ^^ ...very good game but not a Resi ....the title could ve been "changed horror gaming to the worst" (if anyone considers into what the series has evolved.....RE5-6....and finally the tragic RE7
I still think it had a decent balance of both horror and action I mean going through the Castle for the first time, low on ammo and all you could hear was that chanting put you on the edge of your seat. I used to try and look for them but suddenly, out of nowhere they'd stab me in the back
I shake my head at the people who say "It's not even a true Resident Evil title." Do these same people also say that titles such as Fallout 3, Hitman: Absolution, Grand Theft Auto 3, Metroid Prime, Bioshock Infinite, Metal Gear Solid 4, & Tomb Raider '13 aren't true mainline installments in their respective franchises because they dramatically changed a lot of the conventions from previous installments? And don't even me started on the ridiculous arguments on what constitutes a "true mainline Final Fantasy title."
I think you meant Metal Gear Solid 5.. Metal Gear Solid 4 was a true MGS game unlike 5.
To me MGS5 was more a MGS game than MGS4. MGS4 had amazing stealth gameplay but there was so little of it (and gameplay in general) that I was left extremely disappointed. MGS5 fixed that.
Mgs4 took away most of the stralth and forced you to play the game like a third person shooter a lot of the time.
To be fair, Resident Evil 4 threw away important aspects that made survival horror such as ammo drops for killing enemies and overpowered melee attacks (the same could be said for new Tomb Raider throwing away it's aspect of survival by regenerating health and the ability to make silencers out of animal bones). Metal Gear Solid 4, while adding a new perspective, added many new elements that complimented it's original gameplay which kept it being a stealth game foremost. Evolution can occur in gaming but not by throwing away key concepts that made it attractive in the first place.
Please don't shake ur head :(
I wouldn't say that RE4 did irreparable damage to the overall franchise. Resident Evil: Revelations 1 & 2 were great titles that blended the great modern controls from RE4-RE6 and the gameplay philosophies of RE1-RE3 into a great package.
Revelations 2 was amazing. It's the best Resident Evil I'd played at the time since 3.
Resident Evil 4 ruined horror games by making them about action. It took over a decade for horror games to make a comeback
Its not RE4's fault. Its the devs and companies that tried to copy it. It is there fault they failed at making either a action horror, or just a horror. Really. RE4 was nothing but a success. It's like blaming marijuana for heroine addicts. "Oh but the slippery slope". Nah **** off mate.
How many times has this been discussed in the last 12 years.... fuck, just in the last year?! It's awesome, I've purchased it on 4 systems since it was released. I love it, we all love it! FIND A NEW TOPIC!!!
The moment Resident Evil 4 Introduced action game play the series went downhill. But with the release Resident Evil 7 It's going back to It's survival horror roots.
RE. already went back its roots with Revelations 1&2
Resident Evil 4 was fantastic. The boss fights, gameplay, level design and even the graphics are still memorable. 5 was the turning point for the series however. The co-op addition was better suited for a spinoff like Resident Evil Outbreak.
Resident evil was a classic for its time. Before resident evil afraid of the dark was the go to horror game with its creepy mansion setting. Resident evil took that idea and amped it up for a new generation. But honestly from the puzzles, and the whole zombie thing it got old by resident evil 2. Even the remake though good revealed much of the flaws in the game. It was boring for the most part. In comes resident evil 3 to keep us too on edge from the nemesis to keep things from getting boring. But those dam stupid puzzles, and backtracking were still a problem.....and of course more zombies yawn. Resident evil 4 was special in that it introduced qte at various points and zombies were no longer shambling idiots. Real threats elevated the tension. Although the qte made many fans despise mechanic, it did make boss fights interesting. It was a fast action packed resident evil that still kept the creep factor intact. Resident evil 5,6 seemed more like a test of ideas that many just didn't like. Those ideas culminated in resident evil revelations although with much less action. Branching storylines hurt this franchise along with a convoluted story. I don't even count the other resident evils as I consider those to also be capcom kicking around other ideas to keep the franchise fresh. But here now is the crowning achievement of all resident evils. Number 7. As you play through this game you will see bits and pieces of every resident evil that came before. All the good parts that made them special. With the added benefit of VR. Resident evil 4 had the right idea at a time that the series was getting stale. But now resident evil 7 has done the same.
What do people mean Resident Evil 4 wasn't about horror? it's has more horror than resident evil 5,6 and 7 combined.
More than 7? Nah
RE games to me has never been about horror. They were about tense atmosphere because I was never scared even when I played them even when I was a kid. RE4 to me had a fantastic atmosphere and not only is the best RE game for me but is also one of the best games I have ever played.
I've never been on the bandwagon for Resident Evil 4. Great action game, but never got the feel of Resident Evil once I got passed the forest village area in the beginning of the game. Everything just got silly after that. I never really understood why that game got so much love, when RE5 and 6, which were both crap, are basically evolved versions of RE4.
RE5 and 6, neither had adventure or horror. Most people say RE is a horror series. but its also adventure and puzzles. Along with survival horror.
Honestly it got out of the horror genre and it made the series into a Survival Horror/Action series. Resident Evil 7 on the other hand took the series into a whole new level while going back to its roots!
