When Is Paid DLC Released Too Early After A Game’s Launch?

As Resident Evil 7 DLC makes its scheduled debut a week after launch, a question is raised; should it have been part of the complete game package?

Honestly whenever I see paid DLC like map packs or story expansions released within a month or two I always feel like it's cut content

It's usually not do see that they worked on right after they finish the game because that stuff still takes time so in reality it was probably being created during development or maybe even cut.

Capcom does it the worse because with a Resident Evil game ever since 5 you know you're going to get DLC modes. And Capcom was really bad with last generation Street Fighter iterations and especially bad with cut endings in akuma wrath.

While some developers you can debate whether it's cut content I always feel with Capcom that it most definitely is.

"While some developers you can debate whether it's cut content I always feel with Capcom that it most definitely is"

Technically all post-launch content could be debatable regarding this.

Unless your part of the development team you're actually never going to know when that contact was created or whether or not it was ever intended to be part of the final game.

I think you have to even realize yourself that if this company is always going to create downloadable content, what's the purpose of cutting content that was always made to be sold after the fact in the first place? So they're always going to not cut content only to come to the conclusion to cut content? Lol

Have you seriously not slowly evaluated that? Just think really long and slow about it to realize this because it doesn't really make any sense.

So let's jokingly say 30 years from now when PlayStation 8 is released Capcom is releasing DLC for a game do you really think they're cutting the content from the main game even 30 years after they've been doing such a thing for the longest time? Wouldn't it be completely understood that the contact was never even going to be in the final game in the first place?

This is where the nitpicking gets a bit ridiculous because this is actually irrelevant to the end-user because you don't even legally own the Resident Evil intellectual property in the first place.

I see what your saying and i agree, but again its capcom a company that purposily sold a true ending to one of their titles and they're doing the same with Dead Rising. They're also selling a mode that has been featured throughout the Dead Rising series. And with RE7 while they say that's free right in the announcements the last thing I shouldn't see after beating a game and watching the credit roll is a advertisement about free DLC coming soon. Its silly and its forced, even if its free.

And then let's not forget the time they sold ON DISC DLC for a product that you already bought but locked away portions of it. The excuse was insanely laughable about not wanting people to waste time downloading it from online, but at the end of the day it was still a disc being sold with a portion of it locked.

The purpose to cut content from a game that didnt need it cut is to resell it and save on development time/cost. Plain and simple., otherwise cut content is usually spoken about from developers and we never see it(in most cases)

Sure not all Developers have an agenda to cut content but Capcom has a open history of nasty DLC practices

Content purposely cut to make an extra buck in the form of DLC. If people didn't start catching on they would still be putting all the DLC on disc and hiding/locking it behind a paywall from day 1 of release. But this way they can lead people into believing it was something that was worked on after the game released and made some sales.

Never too early for me, love me some day 1 dlc! Nothing like forking over an extra +$20 for only 1-2 hours of content, bring it on! #Sarcasm

_-EDMIX-_2642d ago

Who cares?

To what benefit is it to the consumer to hold back the release of content just to give some sort of Illusion that it's being worked on?

1nsomniac2642d ago

While I completely agree with what you're saying. They shouldn't be working on DLC until the main product is finished & released.

_-EDMIX-_2642d ago (Edited 2642d ago )

Who's to say? You don't own that company or that intellectual property.

"They shouldn't be working on DLC until the main product is finished & released."

Why?

Or what? You'll take them to jail? You'll sue them for working on their own property?

Help me understand how this hurts you as a consumer and then help me understand what your solution is to solve this "problem".

I definitely see your point, but it's also a double edged sword.

If they leave it until the game is completely launched then they wouldn't have started working on DLC until this week. That means it would be months before we even hear about it or it releases, and I imagine they would rather capitalise on the momentum of the game's launch rather than potentially letting interest wane or stagnate.

We also have no idea how long this DLC took/takes to develop. Who's to say they didn't have a team working on this for the last 6 months? There's also the fact that a game will go gold weeks to months before release, so anything they can't get in before that date will have to be patched in, and that may have been the projected finish date for the development.

At the end of the day, they totally could have cut it and resold it, I wouldn't put it past capcom. But we also don't really know how many hours, weeks, and months went into working on it alongside the main game

*Sigh* ..and you're the reason why the world is shitty & ruled by scumbags. Hope your macho-ness makes you feel big & strong. Your lack of understanding of insight clearly makes you far more of an alpha male than the rest of us. Who strangely have more of an understanding of the consequences.......

It's insane that they're releasing DLC a week after releasing the game. Especially as it's a relatively short but full priced game. A great game but still arguably too short to be releasing chargeable content packs 1 week after it's release.

Kocurstvo2642d ago (Edited 2642d ago )

There is only one paid DLC in the hishtory of world which is not unmoral and worth every single penny. WITCHER 3: Blood and Wine!!!! If you compare that much work and value to e.g. all fighting games DLCs, you want to smash Capcoms etc. faces....

_-EDMIX-_2642d ago

"only one paid DLC in the hishtory of world which is not unmoral and worth every single penny. WITCHER 3: Blood and Wine"

Lol

Separate morals from business buddy they're both irrelevant and they cannot mix because their concepts are completely different.

For all you know The Witcher 3 DLC was all been cut from the final product to be sold separately

I'm not saying that this happened and I actually believe it's unlikely, but anything you could say about downloadable content for other games you technically could say about The Witcher 3 in regards to "morality".

We don't know that the content that was made in The Witcher 3 was made after the fact any more than we know about the content that's made in any other game bud.

Concepts of worth is subjective, the idea of "morality" is irrelevant to business lol

Kocurstvo2642d ago

Its been NOT cut from final products. Those are manners of others.... Capcom etc.

Kocurstvo2642d ago

Why bussiness should not be moral???? You probably are from US thinking moralty and bussiness cannot meet hand to hand...

Resident Evil Fans Discuss Whether They Prefer First Or Third Person

Players have long debated the merits of third-person as opposed to first-person perspective in games and the topic has recently resurfaced on Reddit, this time concerning the long running Resident Evil series. The discussion so far has generated somewhat heated opinions from users on both sides of the argument.

Resident Evil has a long history of using both perspectives, with some entries in the series like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 offering players a third-person view, while others like Resident Evil 7 provided players with a first-person perspective. Some fans believe third-person allows for better visibility and control over the character, while others believe that first-person immerses you more deeply into the game's atmosphere.

Third always

It's what it's always been and how it's meant to be played whether it's fixed camera angles or over the shoulder.

Rockstar363d ago

There was a time when I would have agreed but if you've got a vr setup the 1st person RE's are on another level.

That being said, they can both exist because they're both fantastic.

Babadook7349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

Exactly. If there was no VR version available or possible I’d say 3rd person. But because of the extreme heightened immersion, VR trounces the flat screen version, so 1st person please.

Sonic1881363d ago (Edited 363d ago )

They should have the option to have both going forward imo. But I do prefer third person view

Levii_92363d ago

I love both and the new mainline RE games should stay in first person for at lest one more game that’s why i hated that Capcom for some reason added third person in RE8 .. like why ? What was the point ? It just lost what made the new games unique and different. Re7 is a gem and already such a classic, it’s RE1 of this generation or well the prevous generation i guess i should say and RE8 is bonkers and so fun. Such great games.

Goozex363d ago

First person. It just ramps up the intensity for me

What horror franchises could learn from Resident Evil

Resident Evil has remained the most popular horror franchise in video games for a long time. These are the reasons why.

The remakes are good examples

Resident Evil 2: "Here's how you do a remake"

Resident Evil 3: "Here's how NOT to do a remake"

NecrumOddBoy501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

I think RE3 was actually pretty good but just short and flawed a bit. If Capcom would’ve just put the RE3 campaign and it’s dodge mechanic into RE2 (maybe called it RE Raccoon City Chronicles) and placed the the game in a canonical order LEON A, CLAIRE B, JILL C; then dropped the multiplayer nonsense, it would have been the most perfect package. I enjoyed RE3’s ties in to 2 and they streamlined it well. It just was a flawed deliver.

-Foxtrot501d ago

Oh don't get me wrong, it was a good game but compared to RE2 it was a step back

It was lazier, felt rushed, shorter in comparison and totally the wrong way for Capcom themselves to do a remake

Luckily they got the memo because I'm sure I read RE4 was supposed to be done by the team that did RE3 before they rebooted development.

RE3 needs a directors cut, it needs to be longer, they need to include the choices, add the other locations in by expanding/reworking the current story and also rework how Nemesis works. I want to explore more the city, even if areas have nothing to do with the main objectives and only exist to explore for collectibles or to find new gear.

staticall501d ago

Punching huge bolders while being in a volcano sounds cool on paper, but looks very dumb.
More QTEs = worse experience (RE6 mostly)
Sometimes big doesn't mean "better" (RE6 bosses mostly)
Not every game's suppose to have a multiplayer component (RE3 remake, Umbrella Corps). But sometimes it just works (Outbreak)
Small stamina bar for melee attacks is dumb (RE6)
Locking better skills behind drip-fed skill point drops is awful (RE6)
Do not give your flagship IPs to outside studios. But if you did, heavily control the game quality and direction (Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City)

FallenAngel1984501d ago

For me Resident Evil’s biggest impact on the gaming medium will always be that over the shoulder control scheme pioneered by RE4

Death in the Family: A Look Back at Resident Evil 7

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "With Resident Evil Village out imminently, it seems like an ideal time to revisit its immediate predecessor, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a game that steered the franchise back to its roots. After replaying the game this past week, I can say with confidence it remains one of my favorites in the long-running series, due to its scary and disturbing atmosphere, challenging boss battles, twisting narrative, breathless action, and old-school survival-horror gameplay. It's certainly not perfect — there isn't much enemy variety and the final boss is a letdown — but overall it's a great game worthy of the name Resident Evil."
