Nintendo Switch Spec Analysis: CPU, GPU Power And The Cost Factor

The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic device, in concept. But what we’ve seen in terms of pricing and hardware specs underlines the point that, in the end, it’s the implementation that counts.

So it's a Wii U in portable mode and slightly underpowered original Xbox One in docked mode. I wonder if the console will have a "Pro" variant down the line. Would be nice to have a 1080p screen with maybe a Tegra X2 or even a standalone console version with 4K graphics. Still keen anyway, preorder fully paid off with Zelda LE. Bring it on!

GamingIVfun2649d ago

The only real problem I see is the pricing of accessories and them not including a game with the system. Let's face it they are milking early adopters, me being one of them, 1,2 Switch should be the pack in game. The pricing for accessories should be 15 to 20 percent cheaper, I would be willing to bet that we will see both things happen within months of the initial release of the console, like I said they are milking early adopters of the console and it seems to be paying off because most everything is sold out or selling very well. Weather this bites them in the ass in the future, who knows.

As far as resolution goes on the handheld version of games, 720p will look pretty darn good on a just over 6 inch screen and as long as most games can stay within 900p on the TV version of the games and maintain decent frame rates then I don't see that as a problem either. You will still be getting the best and very good versions of Nintendo games. Also the joycons may be small but their is a lot of interesting tech in them. on the on board memory being only 32gig, Micro SD cards are really cheap these days and can be much faster than a hard drive, so the on board memory issue is not really an issue, plus file sizes are likely to be much smaller than what they are on other consoles and PC.

I'm a die hard gamer, Zelda Breath Of The Wild and Mario Odyssey were enough to sell me, and I'm sure many really good Indies along with other great Nintendo games will make the purchase worth it for me, by now any one that wants a Nintendo console buys them for Nintendo games.

CyrusLemont2649d ago

It's expensive sure, but it's a new console and you're getting a built in screen with the device too. You don't have to connect it to a TV at all to use it either. So you could very well go out and buy it and you'd have a handheld with console graphics in your hands. I think its launch price is quite well justified for that reason. The accessory costs are a bit of a nightmare though, so I'll probably wait for them to come down.

I love my PS Pro and X1S and their games but they're strictly home entertainment systems and to me feel like a different type of gaming. It's hard to define but Nintendo has this sort of bright, carefree and fun energy as a company and it reflects that in their consoles and straight to the point gaming philosophy. It makes you forget about the tech or hardware once you start playing. You just enjoy it.

However, as an exception when I had a Wii U, I couldn't stand to look at the gamepads low res screen and barely touched the console in general. This just felt like Nintendo's first big miss. It was bad timing for them and the right technology to create their vision just wasn't there yet. I think it's here now.

I'm sure somewhere down the line we'll see a Switch Bundle with a larger built in capacity or a memory stick and a couple of games.

I do think this system will eventually merge Nintendo's handheld game lineup and phase out their 3DS support. It'll bring both their markets together and allow their supporting developers to focus solely on one system. I can only imagine how great a Switch Pokemon game will be.

I have to say Zelda and and a spiritual successor to Mario 64 has really got me pumped for this as well. It's so awesome, the idea of laying in bed at night and playing Zelda in console form. Damn.

wonderfulmonkeyman2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

Nope. The tech inside is already more powerful than the Wii U.

We'll have all the full specs for it in the next three months thanks to multiple teardown vids, but most of the specs rumors place it between the XB1 and PS4 when docked, and just slightly below or alongside the XB1 when undocked.

CyrusLemont2649d ago

Great news if true, I'm simply going off what was in the article, which assumes the system is carrying a Tegra X1 variant. I remember rumours of the system carrying a Tegra X2 chip going around a while ago which would place it at a theoretical maximum of 1.5 T/Flops, so you might be right! The only reason I'm skeptical of that is Zelda's resolution in docked mode considering it's not as visually demanding as some games on X1 and PS4 which run at 1080p. Only time will tell really.

Ashira2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

That's just not possible because:

1) The GPU isn't powerful enough. This is a mobile GPU, not a desktop GPU.
2) Even if 1) was false, it's still not possible. Nintendo made a portable system which means compact and light, the opposite of what you would with a desktop system. Compact means no room for ventilation, and light means no fans. There's a limit to how much you can passively cool, which seems to be the case for the Switch.

Specs currently puts the Switch as a little bit more powerful than the WiiU, but that's it.

jmc88882649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

What? Digital foundry did an analysis that had them giving figures and through doing the math it is estimated Switch is about ~157 GFLops undocked, and ~393 GFLops docked. PS4 is ~1840 GFlops.

(256 * 2) * .3072 = 157.2864 Undocked

157.2864 *2.5 = 393.216 Docked

Again, PS4 is ~1840

It's nowhere near XB1, let alone PS4.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

We've seen NOTHING to indicate otherwise... in fact EVERYTHING indicates it's pretty spot on from lack of 3rd party support, to Nintendo 1st party game visuals, to FIFA being built off PS3/360 version.

If anything, power wise when compared to gaming tech, it's equivalent to PC GPU's from 2007-2008.

For instance, the Geforce 8800 Ultra did 384 GFLops and was released in May 2007. Architectural improvements may give Switch the effective power of maybe a year newer.

We'll get more confirmation with the tear downs, but digital foundry's numbers are unlikely to be far off.

Wallstreet372649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

No one places it between xb1 and
Ps4 so please stop it. Almost all sources say it is weaker than Xbox one.
And again as much as you defended Nintendo and said all the rumors or most insider info was bs about the switch they sure came out to be true. How many times do ppl need to be proven wrong?

For Christ sakes lol this system is running the new Mario at 720 P according to digital foundry and Splatoon when docked lol, they may push it to 900p for release but this system is not between x1 and ps4. You wish!!!

deafdani2649d ago

Between XB1 and PS4 when docked???

I can't believe at this point you're still clinging to that false hope.

Switch is closer in power to Wii U than Xbox One. We can safely assume it's a bit more powerful, but that's it.

EddieNX 2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

@jmc. Wiiu is 350gflops and Switch is matching it in handheld mode and thats just on launch ports,

Zelda wiiu -720 30 Zelda switch undocked - 720 30. Mario kart wiiu 720 60 Mario kart Switch undocked - 720 60

How would that be possible if what you were saying was true? Its got 4gb ram even when undocked so its better r than wiiu when undocked and in between wiiu and XB1 when docked.

Tussin1872648d ago

Where did you pull out that info from? I have a guess.

0_o

Rdeal2648d ago

where did you get the idea that's it's up there in power with the xbox one? even when docked it's only going to be slightly more powerful than the WiiU

BLKxSEPTEMBER2648d ago

You are on crack if you think the Switch is on par with the X1 docked or undocked.

MVGeneral2648d ago

Lol where are you getting this info from?
Man you guys at the Nintendo defence force HQ, have serious denial and Stockholm issues.

ABizzel12648d ago

Absolute lies. As the video says and the current rumors, Switch is apparently using a significantly underclocked Tegra X1. At it's best is a bit above the PS360Wii U, or a bit under half the power of the XBO.

The Switch then takes that power and practically cuts it in half for handheld mode, and just a bit more power when docked, putting it right back down there is PS360Wii U territory when undocked.

Switch is the Wii U console all stuffed into a tablet, which great technologically speaking, because that's what Sony was doing with their handhelds, the problem is a $300 handheld is a hard sell even for Nintendo, and especially in NA and EU where the market is fading to tablets and cellphones, many of which offer similar power to the Switch thanks to the awful downclocks.

If anything Switch will make big moves for Android and iPhone App stores.

CrimsonWing692648d ago (Edited 2648d ago )

Oh my god where are you getting your info!?

Please link the sites that say it's between a PS4 and Xbone when docked and slightly below an Xbone when undocked. Otherwise you're a fanboy talking out his *ss!

patchzon2648d ago

``Most of the specs rumors place it between the XB1 and PS4 when docked, and just slightly below or alongside the XB1 when undocked.``Dude, you really must be under the influence of some substance so rare its almost impossible to find it in the all galaxy!
Nintendo has almost never been able to produce high end powerful, and technically superior hardware compare to its competitors.I stopped buying their consoles after the N64.

In 2000 they still had a game boy on the market with no back light on the screen, can you believe that??I always use my ps vita to remote play my ps4 games and i can tell you that the ugliest game on ps4 look better on the oled vita screen than anything i have seen on the switch so far,and that feature was implemented years ago.I think nintendo focus has always been on a younger audience that just want to have fun, defineltly not hardcore gamers!

butchertroll2648d ago (Edited 2648d ago )

Switch is not between XB1 and PS4. LOL! Dude, check your disagree votes. You talk bullshit.

It's around 400 GFLOPS when docked.

Dude, Switch has 25 Gbp/s of bandwidth. YOU CAN'T FEED 1.5 TFLOPS with that bandwidth speed. That would be a huge bottleneck. So, around 400 GFLOPS is more reasonable

yeahokwhatever2648d ago (Edited 2648d ago )

HAHHAHAHA

If that was true, wouldn't their biggest and prettiest game look better than any PS3 game? Zelda looks great for an iPhone game. Doesn't hardly look middle of the road for a XB1 game. That doesn't mean the game will suck. I bet the game is really fun. Why don't you listen to Reggie when he says that its not about TFLOPS or performance, its about fun games and waggle sticks?

yeahokwhatever2648d ago

ABizzel1,

If it had open android development, you could bet your ass I'd be making a game for it right this second. It doesn't. It won't. :-(

Trekster_Gamer2648d ago

I doubt it's more powerful or even on par with Xbox One or PS4 they're wanting us to spend this much money for an underpowered gimmick.

If it had any real power or could even match consoles that have been out for the past 2 years they would have been boasting the specs but in true Nintendo fashion they hide the specs of their machine because they know it's underpowered.

Initial news reports said this would be the portable version with a home like console being release later in the year . Is Nintendo holding information back?

Aenea2648d ago

yeahokwhatever2648d ago

The Switchback! Where Nintendo switches back to making consoles with power that can compete/lead the competition. (Gamecube and back)

XStation4pio_Pro2648d ago

its way less than the original xb1 when docked.

conanlifts2648d ago

The original artical from digital foundry states that even in portable mode it is slightly more powerful than a wii u. Docked it is 2.5x the power.

CorndogBurglar2648d ago

I'm not so sure it is overpriced. Not when you consider the portable aspects.

A New 3DS XL is $200 and well worth it. Its a great handheld. Just the portable piece alone of the Switch is pretty cool. It outperforms the 3DS in every possible way, plus it can be hooked up to a tv and gets a boost for home gaming.

I know most people are judging this as a home console, but they shouldn't overlook the portable side.

deafdani2648d ago

I agree with you that people shouldn't overlook the portable side, but it's not people's fault that they're judging its power as a home console because Nintendo themselves are pushing it primarily as a home console.

So, they're comparing it with the other relevant home consoles in the market: Xbox One and PS4. Stacked next to them, the Switch is pretty underwhelming.

I'm seeing it as what it actually is: a Nintendo tablet that can be docked to the TV. For $300, we're getting a pretty powerful handheld, and Nintendo once again shows that they have a different plan, and AAA western third party support pretty likely isn't part of said plan.

If the Switch gets strong Nintendo support, along with indies and strong japanese support (which all of Ninty's handhelds always get), then it could still be able to deliver a lot of games, even without the support of american third party games. I think that's actually Nintendo's plan.

yeahokwhatever2648d ago

Its far, far too big to be a useful portable. It makes the Vita look tiny, and the Vita is too big already.

I did read an article that outlines a patent for a device that could be plugged into the Switch to help boost the power, similar to what they have done in the past, it doesnt sound very solid, though it is very Nintendo peripherals they love making you buy add on's

Their higher ups do need a slap, the Switch looks amazing but it hurts my brain why they've chosen to riddle it with issues.

Ashunderfire862649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

This is why I am waiting and not preordering the Switch, when you have the base PS4, and X1 consoles with better library of games. Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh, For Honor, Ghost Recon, Nier, and so many more games will blow the water 💦 out of Switch launch lineup. Sorry Zelda is not good enough to surpass the competition. I don't understand why Nintendo don't wait til the Fall to release the Switch? They would of at least upgrade the specs, with a better launch 🚀 lineup of games including Mario Odyssey! Switch better have great games, because I don't want only play Mario Kart, and Smash Bros as the only 2 great games most people play on the Wii and Wii U. Nintendo is one hell of a stubborn company that don't listen it's fans that well. Nintendo has to make the console a bit more powerful for continue third party support, and if they manage to get the support, all the Switch versions would be AKA custom! Yeah custom made like FIFA. Big whop!!!!

light692648d ago

You sound pretty ignorant dude I mean most console launches are crap it's not only Nintendo (and please notice I said most and not all, so I'm acknowledging that their are good launch line ups too) aside from that companies have been developing the games you mentioned for a while not to mention they even been developing for those consoles for sometime as well. It's not really fair to say "hey this launch line up can't compete with this upcoming games". Aside from that what I can say is that if you're looking for those kinds of games aka gritty/shooters/ realistic style then go to PS4/Xbox. By now you should know Nintendo isn't about the realistic/gritty/shooter in fact they don't market themselves as that so why expect that from them? That's being ignorant. Still from what's been announced so far you can't say that it doesn't have great games coming to it.
Zelda
Xenobalde
Mario
Fire emblems
Fire emeblem warriors
Shine megami tensei
Arms
Sonic etc...

Again I repeat these aren't your gritty/shooter/realistic style games lol so don't expect that but that doesn't mean these games aren't going to be great for what they are.

As for the FIFA and 3rd parties with custom builds of the games all I really have to say is this. First people complain about no 3rd party on Nintendo and then when their is a 3rd party game then people complain of the build? There's really no pleasing people, it's the same game...

Ashunderfire862647d ago (Edited 2647d ago )

Where in my comments did I said realistic gritty shooters? What I am saying Nintendo rush to bring the Switch release in Spring, instead of Fall where more Switch games would come out for the system. Nintendo would have alot more time to add more to the system. I am well aware that Nintendo has more games coming out, but the launch lineup is pretty slim for an overprice system.

light692647d ago

It's a educated guess from the list of games you listed dude... 😒 If to you those games are the ones you feel will perform well then it's clear that you go for those kinds of games if not all the time then more often than others.
Like I've told many people launch line ups are rarely good I don't understand why people get over hyped for them. Trying to compare 2-3 year old console line ups for the year with a new consoles launch line up is not just or fair to say the least, not that I'm completely biased or defending Nintendo about it. Still though why do people want 10+ more games it's not like you'll be playing 10 different games at the same time on it and I understand variety for the consumer is a thing but from the looks of it the people getting the switch early on will either be fans, Zelda fans, or kids. On top of that you're getting 3 experiences with the console lol I still think people complaining about the price are being bitchy spoiled brats tbh sorry

Artemidorus2649d ago

Just declare this console a rip off alert. Only the die hard fanboys will lap it up.

pleasuretokill2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

Hardware released in 2017 should, at the very least be able to push 900p/60fps on every game. Nintendo blundered by going with handheld and as a result, gimping their "docked" or actual HOME system. I have absolutely NO use for handheld gaming on a terrible 6" screen, so, for $300, then $60 a piece for games as none are included, plus paying for Nintendo's Online (with no free games to boot, just a monthly download that they take from you...) add in taxes and such and you are well above $400 for just the system and one game to play....

No thanks. This will be the generation I abandon Nintendo, unless I can get the system on a crazy low deal after the market for it tanks into the ground. (anyone want to sell their Switch to me for $150 with a game after the crash... message me here lol)

light692648d ago

I guess it's a good thing that people like you aren't the majority, I've heard plenty of people that care for the portable factor and unlike your biased and ignorant cóment of a terrible 6" screen many people think the screen is great. Everyone has their own opinions, to bad not all opinions are great.

The only thing we can agree on is the online, but then again they haven't revealed all the details so I would still say let's just wait and see

pleasuretokill2646d ago

Yes. Too bad all opinions "aren't great". Yours being point #1 of "not being great".

Lol dude the least you could do is comment why you have your argumentative opinions. Sad you couldn't come up with something smarter 😂
