Rumor: Nintendo Switch to be $249 in US, Reddit mods verify leaker’s credentials

A report came out earlier today via Reddit that Best Buy was listing the Nintendo Switch for $249 in their system. While it could still be wrong, Reddit's mods have verified that the leaker would have access to this information leading credibility to this report.

The 3DS launched at 249 as well. I don't think "really good" is quite accurate. The Wii launched at 249 as well, the Wii was not pushing the graphical envelope and neither is the Switch. 249 is exactly what I expected for a device like this from Nintendo. It's my opinion, given the hardware, given the year, given the price of other things, I think 249 is acceptable/expected. 199 would be "really good", and anything lower would be "great". The Shield, which this thing basically is(I know, this one's "special" blah blah), goes for 249. I expect the same-ish thing going for 249 under a different name to be "acceptable", yes. If Nintendo makes a game store like the google play store, and opens it up to devs like android, then its an AMAZING value. That's not going to happen though, so again, 249 is acceptable.

Wii was released in 2006 at $250. Adjusted to inflation, that price would equate to $299.30 today.

Also, 3DS did horribly at its initial $250 price point. Nintendo had to slash its price to $170 barely 7 months after its launch, along with launching a plethora of good games. It was only then that the tides turned for the 3DS.

Vita was much more powerful than 3DS and launched at $250 as well. Consumer perception regarding the Vita's launch price was great. Everyone thought it was a superb price for the specs of that machine. Ultimately, a lot of people were turned off by the hidden cost of the propietary memory cards, which was quite high (and was one of the responsible factors for its failure in the market).

In terms of power, Switch is in another whole other level compared to the Vita. Vita was somewhere between PS2 and Xbox 360. Switch is somewhere between Wii U (which is more powerful than PS3) and Xbox One.

So, if Switch effectively launches at $250, and doesn't have any hidden costs like Vita did, consumers will be pretty happy with that price.

What he's essentially asking is by it being continuously plugged into a charger will that in fact damage the internal battery or shorten the charging capacity over time. It happens with every electronic that requires charging, that why people shouldn't leave their phones connected to outlets after they're completely charged, because it shortens the charging capacity of the batteries.

Everyone seems to be saying this is a great price in the thread but what if its under 1 tf of power and 3gb of ram with a 2 or 3 hour battery life? Wii U was a 176gflop system, using old 2011/2012 AMD gpu architecture, this is rumored to be 3-4X that in raw performance and probably has a more efficient API, as well as hardware mods to make better use of the available tech compared to what was possible back when Wii U released.

I'm a PS4 fanboy and the prospect of what Switch could offer is for me, along more than just the Nintendo Fanboys. I certainly find Switch more enticing than XB1 or Scorpio, given Nintendo will have proper exclusives on the system and all of their devs and partner Studios are probably working on exclusives for it.

I get where you're coming from, but Switch shouldn't only be compared to the consoles, it's a portable as well and it's value will come from the fact you can play it anywhere or anytime you can focus your time on gaming.

You can't take an XB1 or PS4 anywhere with you in a small backpack, you'd have to also carry a huge, portable power supply capable running those systems, as well as a TV. While Switch could be half the power of XB1 it also has it's own screen and a power supply to use anywhere.
If you wanted a laptop with XB1 levels of power you'd be looking at spending over $500 and a much bigger form factor than Switch has.

If the rumors about it being 3-4X more powerful than Wii U are true, but that's raw performance, looking at hardware features which allow devs to do more with it's going to end up with a better level of output than that initial 3-4X Wii U figure shows on paper.

That's likely the docked full clock speed and when portable Switch offers 40% of that.
In handheld mode you have to bare in mind that you're playing on what is going to be a smaller that 10 inch screen, so high res textures, detailed geometry and jaggies are going to be impossible to see compared to a 32inch 720p Or larger and higher res screens.
Going from 720p up to 1080p is a smaller than 60% increase to pixel density, Switch downclocking it's GPU by that amount makes logical sense if you can't notice the difference anyway when playing on the smaller screen.

From someone who has played only PS4 this gen, this doesn't sound like a problem to me, Switch having this level of tech in such a tiny package is fine.
Obviously these are educated guesses, based on what NVidia's Maxwell architecture could do, it could be Pascal and offer a bigger level of performance, but 3-4X Wii U docked, with potential end game performance beyond that in a device like that is cool.
It could handle the majority of the 3rd party games we've seen so far this gen at lower graphical settings, with possibly lower resolutions, the only real reason why they may not come is the software sales factor, but with Switch getting console and handheld device games libraries for this one device that could be what Nintendo needs to drive the masses back to their tech.

I think you're overblowing these arbitrary numbers out of proportion with what the reality likely means.
If you don't like how the games look on Switch you don't have to buy it, same goes for all of us, I think the end results will likely surprise people, but we'll see.

It will be comparable to Nvidia Shield. Same chip and they have a Tablet version. Its dope for a cheap little 200 dollar device but not comparable to a ps4 at all. They ported some older games like Borderlands 2 and Tomb Raider I believe but def not going to run The Witcher 3 at all. $250 is an awful price. As a handheld both the Vita and the 3DS failed at that pricepoint. The console hybrid concept won't interest the bulk of Japanese gamers. The Switch should be undocked and sold as a stand alone at $199 in Japan.

As a console, this device is woefully underpowered and requires an additional $50 on top of the initial price (controller) just to function like their competitors. Unless the bulk of you are going to sit around and play with those silly detachable controllers, $300 is a steep entry price to play Nintendo exclusives on the big screen in 2017. Lke the WiiU, I expect to see less and less 3rd party support from Western developers as the system ages. The portable hybrid concept won't interest the bulk of Western gamers. Aside from their own IPs by and large Japanese games are niche in the West and won't carry the Switch to stardom.

In 37 years of gaming, I have never had buyer's remorse purchasing a gaming platform, Until this past gen. The Vita, WiiU, and XB1 have all been extrememly disappointing. You guys can be the guinea pigs this time around, I'll be happy to take the wait N see approach.

lol Nintendo fan, my ass. I'm an oldschool Sony fanboy. My psn is the same as my username, look me up. Been waiting for the ps4 to live up to the "greatness" of the ps1/ps2 eras like I thought it was going to when I bought one almost 2 years ago but instead been getting shafted with almost nothing but shovelware and mass market horse shit. Thank god I kept my ps2 and ps3.
