Was expecting 3ds to comfortably outsell PS4 given how popular portables are over there, was surprised at how close the sales of the two ended up tbh

really? 3DS has been out for over 5 years. Look how many have sold over there in that timeframe. Sales have to eventually slow down at some point considering everyone and their mother must own a 3DS by now over there.

DS sold excess of 2.5 million units in Japan at this time frame oposed to the 3ds, and wasn't even the best selling portable then, so yes quite surprising.

@Lime123 - how many people own PS4's? Nobody cares about the DS anymore. Was a different time. Less competition for mobile space since smart phones didn't really exist.

So if 3DS LTD reaches 25 million, it will be 8 million down compared to DS? I hope that Nintendo will forget this generation as soon as possible:

@Lime123 - and yet the worst selling Nintendo handheld still will have sold how many times over than the Vita? Pretty sure the 3DS has made a lot of money for Nintendo. I think Sony is the one that needs to rethink their strategy in the handheld market. Either that or just leave the space completely since they clearly had no clue what it meant to market a successful handheld.

Nintendo was smart for making Switch hybrid. They knew if it was home console only it would be bigger flop than N64, NGC and Wii U COMBINED. Now it's hybrid at least have a chance in Japan. In home consoles market Sony HUMILIATED Nintendo home consoles 3/4 generations (PS1 outsold N64 3:1, PS2 outsold NGC 7:1, PS4 in the end will outsell Wii U 10:1, on the other hand Wii in the end outsold PS3 by around 15% - what a monster!)

Congrats Nintendo and Sony. I can see Switch being extremely popular this holiday in Japan.

PS4 sold around 50% better than year before. Also in 2016. PS4 sold better than every PS3 year in Japan. PS4 already at 4 million sold after less than 3 years on market. It could reach 8 million in the end. There is still Kingdom Heart III, FF VII Remake,...to come.

and if it reaches 8 million at the end of its lifetime it will have sold 2.5 million less than the PS3 did in Japan.
