Project Scorpio Will Make 2017 Microsoft's Year, Phil Spencer Hopes

Xbox Executive Phil Spencer Talks Scorpio, addresses fans about the company's response to competition by saying nothing has changed.

He is such a great guy, I wish it to the xbox audience that he can do some good stuff for you guys next year.

Maybe a new Battletoads game that will also be on PC?

Gazondaily2685d ago

I like Spencer but:

"We build our Xbox plans for Xbox customers, not in response to others"

Not exactly true is it? The Scorpio is almost a response to the PS4 and the struggle MS had in terms of power. Obviously the PS4 was also designed in response to the 360 so it is all swings and roundabouts.

I do think MS need to respond to the competition, particularly as far as exclusives go. MS need more titles and the strong PSX 2016 showing just hammered that point even more. Yes many of those games will be years in the making on playstation but they are there. MS need to get off their backsides.

Scorpio however will be beastly. I'm interested in how it will handle VR. Also that price point!

Christopher2685d ago

This echoes Mattrick a bit when he said the PS4 wasn't a competitor. I think they know that's not true, they just want to send a message that they aren't always reacting to the competition and instead try to do things a bit differently when possible. The problem is that's been great in the past, but this generation their new stuff has been extremely slow to come (cloud, dx12, etc.).

Lennoxb632685d ago

I wouldn't say it's totally a response to the Pro. Their decision to put their games on PC is a clear indication that they were looking for fast, easy porting and backward/forward compatibility. This was done long before the announcement of the pro and was likely done to take the work out of porting to future consoles.

blitz06232685d ago

Hardware is good, but where are the games?

ShottyatLaw2685d ago (Edited 2685d ago )

Very true. Let's hope they learned that launching a weaker spec'd machine at a higher price than their competition is the wrong way to launch a system.

I'm being cautiously optimistic about the Scorpio. Since Spencer took over, they're clearly moving in the right direction as a division, and I'm curious about what he brings to the table as they have a real opportunity here. He's smart enough to know the price point required to see success.

I'll give them credit, though. Based on what we know, 2017 is shaping to bring the most diversity in their 1st party efforts we've seen in a long, long time. Their line up next year includes an RTS, a pirate-themed MMO, an action RPG, an open world zombie survival game, remasters of uncharacteristic Xbox classics like Voodoo Vince and Phantom Dust, and an open world action game. I hope this is a sign of Spencer's influence on the games getting green lit over there. Let's see if they're smart enough to fully take advantage of the Scorpio as a launching point.

As for the "Article," the whole thing is based on an innocuous reply tweet to some fans talking about E3 in general. It's not about Scorpio or how it will "make 2017 Microsoft's year." 2017 could potentially be really good for Xbox if they play their cards right. That's still not a reason to stretch this tweet into a ridiculous article.

Here is the tweet: "Looking forward to E3. We build our Xbox plans for Xbox customers, not in response to others. I think 2017 will be a good year."

I hope they treat it like a proper console launch.

bouzebbal2684d ago

how can it make MS year when it is coming out in the end of it?? Can anyone please explain?

Godmars2902684d ago

@bouzebbal:
MS double speak. The Xbox division may be aware if it's shortcomings, but whether or MS will them to act upon them will be another matter.

IamTylerDurden12684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

You're dead wrong on PS4 being a response to 360.

PS4 was a direct response to the PS3, the cell processor, and the price point.

The PS3 was a beautifully designed, intricate, and elegant machine loaded with expensive features. However, the cell processor made it very difficult for developers early on and the jam packed features inflated the price point. The PS3 was wildly ambitious, just pop open an OG DS3 and pop open a 360 controller and take a look inside. Sony was attempting to one up the most successful console of all-time (PS2) and by doing so they in a sense overreached. PS3 was almost ahead of its time and too ambitious, it too proprietary as well.

This directly influenced the development of the PS4. This is why Sony switched to the x86 architecture and this is why Sony built the PS4 through developer feedback. It was a very involved process, even the DS4 was an iterative process that was shaped by developers like Sucker Punch. Also, the low price point was a direct response to the PS3, and palatable price points have been at the forefront of Sony's push this generation. From the PS4, to PSVR, to the PS4 Pro they have all had very consumer friendly launch prices. Sony also realized from the PS3 just how little backwards compatibility affected sales and that a low price point was a far more effective sales strategy.

The PS3 shaped the PS4, not xbox 360.

darthv72,

It had less to do with 360 being simple to develop for and more to do with the PS3 being difficult to develop for. Sony had a team (ICE) that helped devs to figure out the cell processor and how to properly use it, and ppl still had trouble. The PS4's configuration is a direct result of the PS3. They asked devs what they wanted when building PS4 specifically bc the PS3 was such hassle to develop for.

Septic,

You're wrong. The PS3 was incredibly efficient after ppl finally figured it out. The level of quality squeezed out by Naughty Dog and Santa Monica was nothing short of amazing. Early on it wasn't efficient bc ppl didn't understand it, but in the end it created magic. Look at the last few uneventful years of the 360 and then look at what the PS3 produced in that same time. Look at the most impressive/most technically impressive games of last gen. Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, TLoU, God of War III. Those were arguably the 4 best games of the generation (MGS4 and Gears 1 were great as well) and unarguably the 4 most technically/visually impressive games. Say what you will about ram but 360 just didn't have the guts to create the same level of technical greatness in the 2nd half of its life. I do remember having to swap out discs half way through games due to the lack of blu ray in the 360. I also was left holding a useless HD dvd player bc of that lack of blu ray. So each had their own deficiencies. I remember King Kong came with the HD dvd add on.

darthv722684d ago

@tyler... "This is why Sony switched to the x86 architecture and this is why Sony built the PS4 through developer feedback."

Feedback like... 'Please don't make your next system as difficult to develop for like the PS3. You need to make it easy like the 360.' (paraphrasing)

Seriously though, it is not uncommon for companies to take ideas from each other as a means to try and improve their product. There is no rule that said each system has to be radically different. That kind of choice is on the platform holder and what sort of vision they have for the product over time.

Sony focused solely on graphics power where as MS went with a more rounded approach and yet both are within the same realm of specs and performance with the nod to Sony.

Gazondaily2684d ago

@iamtyler

"The PS3 was a beautifully designed, intricate, and elegant machine loaded with expensive features"

That's a nice way of saying it was an inefficient, pain in the backside to develop for console with a bluray drive and not enough ram to accommodate basic features like party chat.

zaherdab2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

"Xbox Consumers" And "Playstation consumers" are one and the same... many jumped ship from xbox 360 to ps4 becoz of what the ps4 was offering hence the ps4 is selling way better than xbox one this generation.

It's all about the marketshare and how much they make it worthwhile for third parties to develop for their system. Nintendo made the mistake of catering to "Nintendo audience" and thas what they got exactly with Wii U their hardcore fan base and a niche market that drove 3rd parties away.

Scorpio is playing the performance game and in the end it's what will drive consumption, bigger and more powerful make it easier for third parties to develop without focusing too much on optimizing and more appealing for consumers to buy obviously. i am playing more backward compatible games on my xbox one s ( majority of the exclusives are 360 games ) while i tend to buy mutiplatform on the ps4 pro simply because this is where they look better.

IamTylerDurden12684d ago

MS has responded to the competition over and over this gen. Many of their major decisions have been direct responses to Sony, Phil is full of it.

Dropping Kinect in order to squeeze out more power and jump from 720p to 900p was a response to the PS4 running games at 1080p.

Scorpio was a response to PS4 being more powerful and likely a response to when they first heard whispers of PS4 Pro. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be releasing a year later. This is the absolute fastest they can get the thing out.

The Tomb Raider deal was a direct response to Sony being scheduled to release Uncharted 4 in holiday of 2015. Even Ryse and Sunset may have been influenced by GoW and Insomniac's relationship with Sony. Elite may have even been a response to the early NMS hype.

Xbox getting involved in VR is obviously a response to Sony, Oculus, and Vive, but most of all...Sony. MS is contracting out for the VR HMDs but my goodness that design is ripoff of PSVR. No other company had used anything similar to Sony's intuitive forehead resting, "crown" design until these two xbox VR headsets were shown.

I'm curious how a console released at the end of the year, would make it their year. Should be more like 2018. I know I'm probably reading too much into the stuff, but with PR you have to.

XanderZane2684d ago

The Beast is coming. I would love to see a new Battletoads game as well as another MechAssault, Links, Crimson Skies, Lost Odyssey 2, and some new sports games. They really need their own Baseball, Golf, Football and Basketball games. They definitely need a lot more games and new IP's. Phil should reconsider having XBox exclusives that aren't on the PC. Should be interesting to see how many Win10 PC games get transferred to the Scorpio in it's first year.

SpaceRanger2685d ago

I've said it once and I'll say it again:

Scorpio will no doubt be a beast...but if there are only a handful of exclusive games next year, then it will not be as successful as it can be. MS has new IPs, but their fanbase (who doesn't normally frequent these sites) have a set taste for games (fps, tps, and sport games). They need more diversity to go up against Sony and Nintendo's switch next year.

AngelicIceDiamond2685d ago

I definitely agree that's the reality of it.

UltraNova2684d ago

It seems we all agree on this one.

First we need to see what is Scorpio to MS and by that i mean is it their Pro or XB2? Then we need to see what's up their sleeve- maybe they are planning to announce a couple new AAA launch games along with Crackdown and a new Forza ...maybe some Halo 5 SP DLC ?

I cant for the love of GOD beleive that they dont have at least all those things lined up for Scorpio's launch.

Plus, a price of 400 maybe 450 bucks max would help them get serious traction.

But lets not forget that they wont be alone next year...Sony and their AAA onslaught and a potential Pro price cut can seriously dampen Scorpios thunder and we dont even know what Nintendo has in store for us with the Switch.

One thing's for sure regarding 2017 and beyond- we, the gamers need to get a second job.

Finch2684d ago

@UltraNova

I am just going to start saving now and forget the second job. LOL

Lennoxb632685d ago (Edited 2685d ago )

Xbox gamers play way more games than just fps, tps, and sports games. Were we not the ones who made some indie studios famous last gen? Inside (which released this gen) for example sold a million in a week before it even went to PC. Xbox gamers like variety. But we don't like variety resulting in a decrease of quality. Which is what variety brings more often than not.

Not to mention the free to play games like Neverwinter and Smite which are also very popular on Xbox.

@ninsigma
More times than not variety brings a decrease in quality because these things are either new or unorthodox.

@P_Bomb
I just explained it to @ninsigma. I'm not saying that variety isn't good. But a lot of times variety ends up being undercooked because it's not a tried and true formula. You have those games that break the mold every now and then of course.

ninsigma2685d ago

No, variety does not bring a decrease in quality. I think you're thinking of large quantity.

P_Bomb2685d ago

How is variety a decrease in quality? It's not one developer being stretched thin here, but several developers merely being allowed to do what they wanna do. One doesn't affect the other.

DJustinUNCHAIND2685d ago

People have been covering up bad games under the guise of variety for a while.

P_Bomb2685d ago (Edited 2685d ago )

@DJ
Such as? What specifically's been covered up under the guise of variety? Bad games happen to every genre, from point'n'clicks to shooters.

nitus102685d ago (Edited 2685d ago )

Neverwinter (MMORPG) and Smite (Multiplayer online battle arena) which are free to play are also on the PS4 and have been for quite some time.

While I can't speak about Smite I do know Neverwinter heavily pushes microtransactions although they so far have not pushed pay to win. You can easily get to level 10 within a few hours without any need to purchase anything and by yourself. You can grind if you wish but the quest system is fair and IMHO quite interesting allowing you to level reasonably quickly.

Between levels 12 to 16 you can get an NPC companion and a horse, both of which are free. Both horse(s) and companion(s) can be upgraded although whether you spend real money or just use in-game money (not all that difficult to get) is up to you. A good player need not spend anything while a poor or inpatient player (can also be someone who wishes to stand out) could spend hundreds of real world dollars on what effectively is fluff.

Personally, I found the game to be quite good although I find that on occasion I do get lag (most likely from my end) which can be offputting especially when you are fighting higher level monsters such as dragons, demons, etc with many other players. The longest I have waited to enter a dungeon with a random party (3 to 5) is two minutes although this depends on how many players are on-line. Dungeons are an excellent way of farming wealth although don't expect allot of help from random players. Guilds are worth joining or creating if you have a lot of online friends playing the game and you can adopt a more tactical approach to all quests.

UCForce2684d ago

@ninsigma is right about this. Everyone have different flavor. Variety is important.

trooper_2684d ago

Play more games than first person shooters? Name some good games that don't involve killer Instinct and Forza.

Christopher2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

I enjoy seeing people supporting one side or another as if either side stands for greater quality or diversity.

Facts are:
* Both consoles have great games
* Both consoles have shitty games
* Both consoles provide a lot of options, some more than others in specific genres
* Players of all types who want something specific will get it on the platform that supports and oftentimes they own both platforms in order to have a full selection of games from which to choose

All this BS "Sony is about diversity" and "Xbox One is about quality over quantity" is just that, BS you tell yourselves to continue these stupid debates. Sony having more games doesn't mean they have more options of value nor does Microsoft having fewer games mean they have better quality.

Each system has its games, no one system is better than the other unless it comes to tastes, which are always subjective and nothing else. Any person who wants to experience all they can will support both systems because they both deserve our support.

That they do. There is so much Halo and Gears can do for them. Hopefully MS can bring us more first party titles.

343_Guilty_Spark2685d ago

PS4 became the default platform for multiplatform games (which sale more than 99% of exclusives) because it performed better than the Xbox and was $100 cheaper. Diversity is just icing on the cake.

2685d ago
babadivad2684d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

What's really going on is, the people who bought 360s last gen bought PS4s this gen.

These are the consumers who actually buy games. It's the reason the attach rate was so high on 360. The hand full of fanboys on this site are just cheerleaders.

Those consumers buy what's the best. 360 was the better buy last gen(especially early on), the PS4 was the better buy this gen. They're the consumers that drive the industry.

Microsoft needs more first party diversity. Like they did in the beginning of the 360 era. They were on fire then. They have culled too many good studios.

And they let EA buy bioware. Effectively letting the best new IP (Mass Effect)from last gen go multi-plat. Sony would have NEVER let that happen.

If Sony didn't buy them, they would've had a 2nd party studio relationship.

They need to try to get some of that back. At least it seems like they are trying again.

The backbone of Sony's business is PlayStation. And it shows. They give studios time for a game to come together.

Microsoft is starting to get their shit together. They are hungry again. And that's only good for gamers.

Besides Recore, the only thing I have been turning my X1 on for is BC games. BC is saving X1 right now.

343_Guilty_Spark2684d ago

Cost and better performing multiplats. Xbox launched first at $400 and had better performance than the $600 PS3 that you needed a second job to get.

extermin8or2684d ago

This isn't correct the fact the ps3 sales equalled the 360 in the end. With a year less in the clock and alot more xbox resales to replace faulty hardware.

I think if Microsoft can't get any and all PC games compatible with Scorpio that's a feat in itself. It'd be the only console with that many games

Christopher2685d ago

Not likely to happen for 'all PC games' but can definitely see it for any PC game on the Windows Store. Especially anything that's using DX12 and UWP.

TKCMuzzer2685d ago

What would be the point of the Scorpio? May as well just stick Xbox Live on a PC and let the Xbox Fans transfer over.
MS have been banging on about the Scorpio for months now and it's still 10 odd months away, yet its nearest competitor continues to announce new games for next year, the year after, for next month and so on.
The clues to success are staring them in the face and have been for some time.

mcstorm2685d ago

People don't want to game on pc that's why we have consoles but bringing a plug and play pc to the market so to speak could be good for Microsoft. I think windows 10 will have a lot of say with the new console and I like them keeping things close just like Nintendo have done with the switch.

i3eyond the Circle2685d ago (Edited 2684d ago )

See that's what I don't understands.

Xbox has 2 'new IPs Scalebound and Sea of Thieves and multiple established heavy hitters Crackdown 3, Halo Wars 2 with the inevitable Forza and the most powerful console dropping 2017. Besides Horizon and Detroit....Xbox to me is looking much more appealing 2017.

So when people say they need to take notes on games I don't see where there logic comes from..

Are we simply assuming Microsoft is not going to announce anything again ever in the future? They get judged as if there will be ZERO games in the works during 2019 when those awesome PlayStation games will all finally be on shelves...and even that's a maybe.

Edit@ Below... Of course not. I just don't think those games are releasing 2017.

You mentioned inevitable Forza but didn't mention inevitable MLB the Show? You also forgot about Gran Tourismo Sport and Ace Combat 7. Aside from those omissions. Sea of thieves (xb1), Detroit(ps4), and Crackdown(xb1) don't have hard release dates yet. Just as Days Gone/god of war/ spider man/ Dreams don't have dates either. Dreams is due for release and I think there is a good chance at one of those others making it too.

Plus the other games sony has announced within the last year that we haven't heard again like Wild.

ShottyatLaw2685d ago

I've used my X1 since 2013 just as much as I've enjoyed using my PS4. People were/are just as excited to get a Pro, and I don't see anything "desperate" about that either.

I like the high-end graphics of my PC, but as someone who spends 40+ hours a week sitting in front of one, I don't always want to spend my free time on a PC, too. That's why I'm interested in the Scorpio.

bluefox7552684d ago

I wanted PS4 Pro because I'll be able to play Sony exclusives in their superior form. I can already play Xbox "exclusives" in their superior form, why would I wait a year and spend $500-$600 on an inferior version that's already beaten by hardware today? Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil5d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19924d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop4d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom3d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor4d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog4d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit4d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum4d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

timeextension.com
ApocalypseShadow9d ago

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle8d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it.
