Geoff Keighley, Please Stop it

Hardcore Gamer was not impressed with The Game Awards, to put it lightly. Hopefully, Mr. Keighley will read this short screed and be ashamed of his words and deeds.

People give him shit all the time, but why does no one realize he's doing everything he can to keep the VGAs alive? and has been for years. If taking a couple awkward sponsors means it sticks around then im all for it. At least we dont have paul blart hosting it with naked solver angels on swings and SGT Teabag

Ashlen2699d ago

I'm OK to just let it die, 2016 was 15 mins of awards 15 mins of games and 90 mins of ads.

-Foxtrot2698d ago

I like how he said they don't have room to announce all winners but we had so much crappy filler like live music, clips from the AC movie and VR behind the scenes

I'd rather see the other awards announced

bluefox7552698d ago

I agree, let it die. It's barely about games.

InMyOpinion2698d ago

Can't wait to play Let it die! :D

Markusb332698d ago

Fully agree the advert awards were a waste of time. Shit music and tons of ads. Just an awful waste of time really,it could be done so much better than that.

freshslicepizza2698d ago

sadly this guy is quite represented to how the industry is actually run.

I admire his passion for gaming, and I do realize he does what he has to do to keep VGA alive, but realistically, if he has to go through so much effort to keep it alive, then is the show really that relevant? There is no governing body which chooses the awards, and there is no centralized governing body for the industry to begin with except maybe ESRB which is only in the US or other groups in other countries. No group of people universally accepted as speaking for the entire industry which gives the awards. The awards are chosen by committee of peers in the industry with no real way to govern who or how those people are chosen.

The show is really nothing more than a vanity project. It has about as much merit as any internet publications own awards do. The establishment for an authoritative awards show just isn't really there for gaming right now....and outside our little circle, there is little mainstream interest to get outside sponsorship, which only makes the merit of the show questionable as too much bias can be introduced through sponsorship(although that's more conspiracy theory than likely actually happening).

So what's the point? The awards really mean nothing except to the winners to slap a logo on the box.

What's the point of the awards? They don't even show most of the awards or the categories.

The truth is, even us gamers don't really give a rat's a** about the awards themselves, outside the times we can gloat or argue about them on forums depending on the situation.

The truth is, us gamers tune in to watch the game reveals and trailers. Maybe some enjoy the developer interviews. Truth is, to gamers, we don't care as much about what happen the past year, but rather, what we have to look forward to in our never-ending insatiable desire to play more and new games.

It's a more pretentious version of E3 press conferences where we have to sit through a bunch of self congratulatory speeches, the occasional political statement from that quarters "found Sarkeesian" idiot, and a bunch of Keighley promoting himself along with the industry which the viewers of the show already love.

So, what's the point? If he just made a show that was about game reveals, he'd probably get more viewers.....but we already have shows for that throughout the year.

Not that I want him to give up. I'd just rather see it become something more authoritative, rather than the glorified falsely inflated important factor that it has been made into in recent years. Heck, I'd even settle for something like Nick Kids Choice awards, but realize that would be highly prejudicial considering just how terribly fanboyish the gamers who are likely to vote can be.

UCForce2698d ago

Well for me, it's ok show. But I agree with you.

Summons752698d ago

If that is his effort to keep it alive then it may as well be dead. How do you possibly sit there and say "We don't have time to give all the awards out" then proceed to show 30 minutes of terrible rappers? His show is awful. Glad we had time for a child and his mommy to get an award because he sits on his a** and plays video games all day when they could have been concentrating more on the developers...you know the people who spend years of their life sacrificing family time and doing crazy amounts of overtime for said kid to get more credit than they do? As long as the awards are in Keighley's hands I'd rather it be dead...I'd much rather it go to someone who is competent and respectful (for one) who will host it in 2017 giving ALL GAMES of the year a chance at an award, someone who will make better categories so a game that DLC has it's own category and RPGs that were ACTUALLY released this year don't get screwed over simply because Keighley wants the games he wants to win, win. Instead of ten tons of ads that has a screen at the end repeating itself 3 times telling me to buy a game I have no interest in buy, they actually secure some games to reveal.

But if you like 2 random rappers who are terrible at rapping that Keighley found outside of a Chipotle then go for it. Gamers want stuff for gamers.

I agree but can't someone be hired that knows how to create a good show? Video games are huge now. This show should be huge! It should be special and really mean something. It should be akin to the Oscars in importance for the industry. No, it doesn't have to be prim and proper, but it has a long way to go. Maybe ask gamers what they wanna see. Hire some professionals who have worked on the Oscars etc.

Hire a professional comedian to open. Get more big names, and keep pushing Twitter and YouTube.

I am happy it's still going and I have hopes will get better.

kraenk122698d ago

A professional comedian...God forbid this ever happens.

joab7772695d ago

Like they choose at other award shows. Actual funny people who can fax some of the industry's finest. Who doesn't like a great roasting?

warriorcase2698d ago (Edited 2698d ago )

Agreed. Alot of whiners in here complaining about the advertisers. Big events, especially new ones need money to fund them. Hell even long lasting major event like major sports have car ads, cars have nothing to do with soccer or football but no one cares there. Im assuming it because of the larger underage audience that the gaming community are so sensitive to every little thing thess days. Alot of Businesses especially show business require money from producers and sponsors to operate. don't like this or the dice awards just don't watch them, easy.

GrimmyReaper2698d ago

Well if the VGA is shit anyways, then why bother trying to keep it alive?
He ain't doing this for our sake, it's clearly for the sponsors and ad revenue.

Geoff Keighley only changed his attitude because if he didn't, he would have quickly become one of the most hated person in the industry.

You know how I mostly remember Geoff? https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Nothing but a typical "journalist" looking for the fastest way to fill his pockets.

When gamer gate arose, he most certainly jumped on that bandwagon.
When that settled down, being "friends" with gamers was the most profitable thing to do.

Geoff is a lying dick, just like all these so called journalists.

NecoTehSergal2698d ago

There's been a lot worse Video-game-related awards/tournament hosting. I remember that one where this dude was hired as a commentor and he didn't give a fuck, was a douche-bro, mouthy and obnoxious as fuck - was an irritating time - it was around the time Tim Schafer was introducing one of his games I think, Broken Age? Either way, it was fine.

It could be much worse, just look at MLG tournaments, where everyone are spastic douchebags where any non-gamer, and even gamers will watch it, cringe and be embarrassed for the entire INDUSTRY for their childishness.

No he's not. He's about himself and making money and getting noticed. He's the bloody DORITO POPE

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

The guy had paid advertisements in his bathroom. On his toilet paper. He's a total whore. He's fake.

DashArrivals2698d ago

Geoff Keighley is the most fake person I've ever seen host an award show. The VGA is absolutely dreadful. They don't celebrate 90% of the winners. The ridiculous sponsors and the stupid scripted crap. Everything feels so forced.

Geoff is a walking cringe. A cringe-on-legs. What with his fake and forced speeches filled with crocodile-teared emotion. The guy is a joke. An industry joke. I will never watch the awards again. I'll just come to N4G and check any 'reveals' here.

I mean it's right before PSX. There are major triple A games releasing after the award show and before the year ends and yet they announce the 'game of the year'. The whole award system is massively flawed. Sports/Racing game? Please. Video games are not meant to have an award show. Lets be honest, he does all this FOR HIMSELF.

NotanotherReboot2698d ago

He needed to tone down on the Kojima admiration. You could see the sheer discomfort in Kojima's face

Summons752698d ago

I face plamed so hard when he started off the speech with "Kojima told me several times he didn't want this award and he wanted to put the Konami stuff in the past" (You know like a respectable adult would with a bad falling out)...then proceed to regurgitate everything we heard over and over and make up things like the "He was locked away for 6 months" only to FORCE him to accept an award he never even wanted. Yeah, Kojima was uncomfortable. Shame Keighley doesn't have the respect for people he spent 5 minutes talking about.

NotanotherReboot2698d ago

I know right. Kojima has his own studio now. A new IP in the works and a new publisher backing him. I'm pretty sure he just wants to move on and put the whole ordeal behind him.

Microsoft Seemingly Closes Bethesda France

As part of its plans to cut 1,900 jobs, Microsoft has reportedly shut down operations at Bethesda France, letting go roughly 15 people

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

GamerRN4h ago

If they are let go, they can be whatever they want. They ARE 3rd party now... 🤦

Barlos1h ago

Yeah, they're also jobless.

PassNextquestion6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger4h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Profchaos6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto5h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos5h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long2h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

XiNatsuDragnel4h ago

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator4h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.
