6 Signs You May Not Actually Be A 'Hardcore' Gamer

You play all the right games , you play all the right systems. You make the wittiest comments to your friends in the hottest game forums. But are you a hardcore gamer? A trend follower? Or maybe even.... gasp! A casual gamer! Here are some signs to watch out for to determine whether you could be a 'hardcore' or 'casual' gamer.

The story is too old to be commented.

SullyDrake3263d ago

A true hardcore gamer doesn't give a crap what other people think of what he's doing, he just wants to do it and get back to the gaming as quick as possible.

SullyDrake3263d ago (Edited 3263d ago )

We have a life, 99 of them to be exact... Hey, that green mushroom is mine!

solidsnakus3263d ago

hey C sol. do you realize your on a video game website posting comments?? welcome to the club mr hypocite

AAACE53263d ago

My opinion of a hardcore gamer is someone who loves games like a crackhead loves crack! They do not care about having a girlfriend, sex, car, real life experiences.

Therefore... I do not consider myself a hardcore gamer! I like playing games alot and look foward to new games and all the stuff that goes along with the territory, but I also have a personal life outside of gaming, and do alot of other things besides playing games.

jlemdon3262d ago

hehee glad I didn't fall into none of those catagories.

John-Paul-Jones3262d ago

And if you check C_SoL's N4G profile, you can see the noob visiting N4G - a gaming site - everyday, posting comments, approving stories and such.

Hypocrisy at best.

Neither of the above exist anyway.
If you play, enjoy and have a passion about gaming no matter how much you play, pay attention to developers, You are a gamer. Simple as.

These 'demographics' didn't exist before this generation despite the same games out there, so why do they suddenly now?
The Wii...its just a way to combat and to split real gamers from people who have only just discovered they can play games on a TV set and a home console.

Hardcore = "YOU CAN KILL THINGS! FAST! AND THERE'S BLOOD! BLOODY LOADS OF IT! KILL PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW ONLINE! FOR FUN! ITS GOT FREAKING LOUD GUNS! CRUNCH! SKULLS A POPPING! FAST! LOOK! NO STORYLINE! OH, WAIT! YOU DON'T NEED ONE BECAUSE ITS HARDCORE! EMOTIONAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PROTAGONIST AND PLAYER? WHATS THAT? THAT SOUNDS GAY! THAT'S NOT MANLY! GET THAT STUFF AWAY FROM MY HARDCORE MACHINE NOW! F**K YEAH! I'LL GET OUT MY GUN LICENCE, CRISPS AND BEER! BECAUSE I'M A REAAAL MAN!"

Casual = "Wow. whats this? A 'GAMES CONSOLE?' How does this work?.. Ooh! that felt a bit strange! did you see that, that just moved the same time as I did! What a strange feeling! Did you just see that! He changed direction as I did! My! This is a queer experience!"

I love the way that people totally seem confused or are just ignoring my satirical outlook on the way the media and developers try selling games to people by inventing or changing definitions.

I personally like a bit of everything, well, except RPG's, RTS and really don't like Sim games (Because I can't be bothered with games that involve to much management, to me, that isn't a game, that's an individual life and life's complicated enough anyway) and the only way I can be related to the so called 'hardcore' gamer is probably playing the Serious Sam games and the UT games on PC and totally loving them, but at the same time, I like a bit of Halo's campaign, Resistance, I like the Halflife series, I used to love Medal of Honour when it was big, I just finally bought a copy of CoD4, I play Devil Dice on my PSP, Love Jak and the Ratchet series and Clank series, had a blast on Crackdown and EDF2017, I like playing racing games mainly arcade and have sessions of games online and a good laugh...get addicted to games as much as the next man if I have the time, or I make time to play the game and I was more or less gaming from an early age for fun on a Amiga.

I just see myself as a gamer. Not hardcore, not casual. I don't want to be filed away as 'some audience' in my preference of games.

And the people I see claiming to be hardcore are that stereotype I just put above me because there's all these FPS and TPS shooter developers saying;
"Well, this is hardcore! This game will be hardcore! Its all about tearing flesh, dealing pain and thinking fast...we've really made it hardcore! This time this game is even more hardcore! Especially online! Its really...hardcore!" etc.
Its like 'hardcore' doesn't mean anything at all in these articles, interviews and reviews, its not a separate genre, its not a separate market, is it? Everyone buys different games.

I just get fed up with it, I want to see if anyone except the media and industry actually chooses to label theirselves either way because 'they' said so.

Do we have little crystals on our palms relating to what type of gamer we are? Do they glow differently when we hop onto another type of game?

"I Am Not A demographic, I Am A Free man!"

jessupj3257d ago

I get really confused when people try to deny that there is a difference between a core gamer and a casual gamer. Believe or not, not everyone has the exact same passion for games. Fred might be very passionte about games and play at least 2-3 hours every day and read up on news and buy new releases and buy them regually. However Billy, might just look at gaming as an enjoyable way of killing time. He mananged to buy a second hand 360 and in the 2 years he's had it, only bought halo and mass effect.

There are thoasands of Freds and Billys exsisting in the world right now. Please do not insult my intelligence and try to tell me otherwise. I have no idea why you think this isn't the case. I am a core gamer, I am better at games then casual gamers (because I game more then them), I buy more gaming products then casual gamers. We might both be gamers but there is a huge difference in peoples gaming habits.

I would love to hear someone argue against my logic. I mean it. Don't give me your own reasons, I mean specifically point to me where my logic if flawed and give me a reason.

"Sign 3 - The Lame
You use Metacritic or some other folly of a 'grading' system to justify or determine the quality of a game. No more needs to be said about that."

90% of Bots fall into that category.
"But, but, but Metacritic says....."

Metacritic just PROOVES what a biased and lack of integrity the games media has had over the past couple of years and is only now making headway at reversing it.

Bangladesh3263d ago (Edited 3263d ago )

The guys a facist moron. I've read thousands of individual reviews over the years, and Metacritic is precisely where people should go to find a quick well rounded idea of the quality of a game. The guy doesn't even give a reason to why he thinks Metacritic is bad, that is a gigantic waving red flag. But judging by the way this guys ego tells him that only he knows the definition of "hardcore gamer" ,I imagine it has something to do with some reviewers having a different opinion than him on a games quality.

And Bathyj you're a stupid f*cker.
"Metacritic just PROOVES what a biased and lack of integrity the games media has had over the past couple of years and is only now making headway at reversing it."

Don't you think it would be easier to cheat a score in a single review, rather than 50 reviews from 50 different sources? You and the Japanese loser that wrote this facsist horse sh*t are just Ps3 crybabies whining because the ps3 is getting it's a*s kicked by the 360 according to the scores on Metacritic.

Talk about an angry little boy

robbo9183262d ago

@Bangladesh: Actually you are the moron. I agree the article was nothing but stupidity for the most part, but the point I believe he was trying to make was there are way too many people who go to Metacritic and say "oh no it scored 79 percent so I can't play it" rather than just use the site for a reference point. I think that is the point you were trying to make but failed because of your stupid fanboy drivel that you were attempting to displace on others. Meta is a decent source of information but if you go by it alone for what you purchase you would miss out on a ton of good games.
