Hot video game fuels B.C. factory

An online gaming fantasy world populated by mythical trolls, gnomes, warriors and warlocks is fuelling a 24-hour-a-day production line in east Vancouver that literally cannot keep up with demand.
FigurePrints LLC makes 10-cm-high figurines of characters from the hugely popular World of Warcraft online videogame at a 3,200-square-foot facility on Venables Street that opened less than a year ago.
The company - based in Redmond, Wash., but with all its production in Vancouver - has an exclusive contract with Blizzard Entertainment to develop figures from the game using 3-D printing technology.

World of Warcraft has more than 12 million monthly subscribers, and FigurePrints has a base of 25,000 potential customers who must enter a monthly lottery for the right to order a custom-designed character figurine. The company makes about 1,200 to 1,400 figurines a month, with each character costing $129.95 US, plus shipping costs.

The story is too old to be commented.
