SCEA Boss "Looking Forward to Holiday"

NPD Group reported Thursday that Xbox 360 and PS3 were virtually neck-and-neck on the hardware front (195,200 vs. 185,400, respectively), but Sony says those figures don't illustrate the entire hardware story.

The firm said total PlayStation hardware unit sales were 582,000, including PS3, PS2 and PSP. Year-to-date, Sony also said the PlayStation

SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said in a statement, "We had yet another strong month for PlayStation in August, which validates that consumers are indeed recognizing the long-term value that PS3 offers as both a gaming and home entertainment device.

Tretton then hyped up PS3's software lineup: "We're looking forward to a solid holiday season and are excited to offer a string of unmatched content to consumers in the coming months with LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift."

PS3 got outsold by 360, and the price cuts haven't even taken effect. If PS3 doesn't cut price, it's gonna be a tough holiday for them.

Last year they didn't really have the games to compete with 360, but they lowered the price and hung in there but still lost badly.

This year the games are more level, but if they don't cut the price it's gonna be another loss.

They need the games and price and together they will be right there, neck and neck with 360 this holiday in North America.

Yep.Thats smart business 101 in a nutshell

Sorry, but the PS3 outsold the 360 though out the '07 holiday season.

Whether the new 360 has a sustainable impact or not, remains to be seen.

Sony doesn't need to drop the price now, in order to compete with MS. MS are the ones that have forced hands and need to drastically drop the price of the arcade sku to even get close to the numbers that the PS3 does Worldwide.

@LightningPS3

The Xbox 360 may have outsold the PS3 in the U.S. last holiday season, but the Playstation 3 sold more units Worldwide for 2007. Even with Halo 3, the Xbox 360 wasn't able to outsell the PS3 worldwide last year.

Worldwide sales are the most important anyways. The only reason why Xbox fans and Microsoft make such a big deal about selling well in the U.S. is because that's the only territory that the 360 has a huge lead over the PS3. Sales just in the U.S. don't make up the entire console war.

Microsoft will always be the first ones to talk about hardware sales in the United States, but they are the last ones to talk about hardware sales Worldwide.

Only North America releases the NPD. Europe and other countries don't.

North America is still the most important region however, and to me who ever wins North America is winning.

IzKyD13313265d ago

"and to me who ever wins North America is winning."

lol, you fail so hard, PS3 is outselling the 360 in Europe even with the year's headstart
and just so you know, Europe accounts for more than 1/3 of all 360 sales, still think Europe doesn't matter?

ShinMaster3265d ago

PS3 DID beat Xbox 360:

PS3 total for the year: 2,018,400

360 total for the year: 1,740,000

IzKyD13313265d ago

Im glad everyone is using my adding skills^^

Nitrowolf23265d ago

lol world wide sales seem more important then just america sales so.
but ya NPD dont include bundles,

PimpHandStrong3265d ago

you do know the PS3 outsold the 360 last year?

just asking

"North America is still the most important region however, and to me who ever wins North America is winning."

Your comment spews and reeks of arrogance and ignorance at every keystroke.

Smarten up.

orakga3265d ago

What you said was politically very unwise. (and gosh you lost some bubbles too...) But in your defense, I agree with what you are saying.

You see... while it SHOULDN'T matter that the PS3 is losing just in the US, the fact that most developers reside in this country, and get caught up by the "local market news" affects software support by third parties and causes Sony's entire image problem in the single most important market in the industry.

So... although Lightning certainly phrased it in a bad way, there is some truth to what he's saying.

Oh well....

RememberThe3573265d ago

...for when the 360 is constantly outselling the PS3. Right now it's out of the norm, for the 360 to out sell the PS3. We'll have to see what this price cut does.

INehalemEXI3265d ago

I look forward to holiday season too. I should be playing KZ2 beta around that time.

Ju3265d ago

Well, US being the most important market. If you read EAs data (a third party), then their report tells a bit of a different story. Even if the sell thru numbers in Europe don't match the American (yet), due to currency differences, the revenue should be about 50% higher by the same number sold. So, that being said, a strong PS3 in Europe has an impact on product planing for companies residing/operating from the US in a global market. Very significantly, IMO. 360 would really need a runaway success here to change that back. Currently its pretty even and swinging towards PS3, IMO. The August numbers won't change that. Christmas season and 360 price cut will have an impact, I am sure about that.

Nathaniel_Drake3265d ago (Edited 3265d ago )

"and to me who ever wins North America is winning."

If that is the statement for the 360 then there should be no comparison whatsoever of the 360 being the next PS2

Edit: @Orakaga

Totally wrong with the "Sony image", you want to say "Playstation Image", your telling me people in America are getting down on Sony, nah I don't think so, the numbers compared to where they were a long time ago stress they are in the minds of the consumer, not to mention the fact that their "image" is bolstered with the introduction of Blu-ray, I don't see where the numbers suggest that consumers are finding the "Playstation" brand as waning, the only reason people would say Playstation is losing it's "image" is because the 360 beat it buy 10,000 units and thats after a forced hand to lower the price

And an obvious variable that's hurting both the 360 and PS3 numbers, is not just the Wii but the fact of PS2 only owners, when that dissipates then the monthly sales of either system are going to be at a better sale rate

morganfell3265d ago

Considering Europe is a larger territory than the USA your thinking is defective.

orakga3265d ago (Edited 3265d ago )

Yes, I meant "Playstation" image, but I would assume that "Sony" and "PS" are interchangable when in the context of a videogame forum.

As for the image problem itself... I hate to keep repeating this, but to the average gamer, the PS3 DOES have an image problem. I deal with gamers of all demographics on a daily basis, and trying to make them buy a PS3 is like pulling teeth.

Sure, it's been outselling the 360 for a few months, but let's take a step back for a second...

If you are going to use the 360 as comparison, then you are setting the bar really low IMO. The addressable gaming audience is much, much larger, and 15 million units sold worldwide represents at most 10% of people who play console videogames.

Please keep in mind that all of us here on N4G are BY DEFINITION "serious gamers". And even among us, the opinion is somewhat split (it's certainly swayed in the PS3's favor over the past year, but it's still 70:30 I'd say).

But once you go into the mainstream market, things change drastically. I *still* see Gamestop stores that won't even turn on their PS3 Kiosk, and Gamestop employees that don't know jack sh!t about that console. And only about 10% of my gaming friends own the PS3; many of them refuse to buy it because it's too expensive, and these are people who play videogames for 2-3 hours on a daily basis! Even 10 years ago, I didn't have this much trouble getting people to buy a Playstation, and this is directly related to the pricepoint.

So yes, I stand by my statement. The Playstation does have an image problem. And it is that it's "too expensive". And that image problem gets fed back up to the developers, who are not only themselves consumers, but also treat PS3 development as an afterthought (except the top few publishers who have the resources to do otherwise).

Sony needs to make better strides for their consumers. Slapping a new hdd in your system and keeping it the same price when the consumer can do that themselves isn't helping. A Ps3 at 350 would be of great benifit. Sony beat themselves in august, if even by a small number. The bigger picture here is the fact that this month they're going to get slaughtered from the cheap ass broken xbox 360 priced at 200 bucks cause consumers are morons and don't know any better.

2 back to back losses and 1 on a grand scale. It's going to hurt Sony big and I fear sony is banking on little big planet a little too much. They are fine biting the bullet in August and september because they think Ocotber is going to be their month and it's not.

-_-3265d ago

[[Unless the xbox sells 500,000 more consoles than the Ps3,Sony have nothing to worry about]]

SpecialSauce3265d ago

they are trying to catch up with the 360. it doesn't matter who sells more this year. it dose matter who sells more thru out the entire console war. and Sony has a chance in October because they got two big games coming out. LBP and Socom. and also R2........... if u can call that a big game.

Stryfeno23265d ago

With $94 million in third party game sales in August, Xbox 360 generated more dollars at retail for third party publishers than any other console, to date generating $4.1 billion, or 58% of share. (August NPD)

AngryXbot3265d ago

the crap60.

So what if 360 sells more in September. Its a SPIKE. Spike only. Spike caused by the reduction of the cheapest (and I mean fking cheapass unreliable) model.

PS3 is winning. 200 bucks more and still going toe to toe. But the real kicker is that this is just the calm before the storm. This holiday season PS3 has the best hardware line up.

360 is done for. They have a 10 hour long RPG and a sequal which will only do well software wise but not hardware wise.

If you look at the big picture, they dont really have anything for next year whereas PS3 is rocking.
