Ever since Tetris hit the scene and took the gaming world by storm nearly 20 years ago, other companies have been trying to create the next "Tetris" without coming off like a blatant copy. Many of these designs have evolved within the action puzzler category to become a part of an even tighter genre: Match Three.
The term "Match Three" essentially describes the game mechanic of connecting game pieces together. The point of "match three" challenge is to match three or more of the same color or tile to keep the gameplay going.
There have been dozens of games on the Nintendo DS and Wii that fit this category, of varying levels of success. This list breaks out the best of the Match Three bunch – these games may still not trounce Tetris, but they're all really excellent games that are worth your gaming time.
