Dream Station: LittleBigPlanet Hands-On

It is undoubtedly, one of the most ambitious and intriguing games on the PlayStation 3. It is LittleBigPlanet by Media Molecule. Part platformer, part multiplayer madness, LittleBigPlanet promises to deliver a one of a kind experience for any console with it's "choose your own adventure" style gameplay. Make your own levels, play a friend's levels, everything is customizable and easy with the built in level editor. In fact, of the 30 minutes of hands on time that I got with LittleBigPlanet one of those levels was, at least, according to the person walking me through the game, constructed in five minutes.

I know I will get flamed. But I just don't see the appeal of this game. What exactly is the point/objective in the game? From the trailers and videos, it looks like a fancy map editor, not a game. Sure the humor and graphics are EPIC WIN but I just don't understand it. Someone fill me in. You really don't seem to do anything in this game, other than create a map, which seems really stupid and boring.

Flamed?

Probably just disagrees and a few people who have seen almost this exact post over and over.

If you don't get it I doubt anyone can explain it to you, but...

First of all, at it's core LBP is supposed to be a really good platformer by all accounts. Humor and Graphics contribute to this.

Second, map editors in most games are like trying to create the Mona Lisa with a few stolen hamster-hairs and exhaust drippings or they require intense knowledge of coding and cad-type drawing. LBP changes all that. Not only are their tools powerful without requiring a huge amount of initial knowledge, they're fun to use. This is not just map editing, it's anything editing. Drum Machines have been made within this sandbox. Many other completely unintended things will be made. This sort of thing doesn't happen in other editors because they're designed with a specific purpose and they don't try to be transparent or flexible... so no one steps outside the box.

Creation is always fun, if you've got good tools that don't get in your way. Map editors would be really fun if the people creating them remembered this.

If you don't want to create levels, you don't have too. There's a main story mode where you can just play the game like a normal platformer if you choose.

#1 Major appeal.... Its different, some of us gamers grow tired of the same thing over and over and over and over..

When i see a 4 player co-op online next gen platformer with the ablity to share customized levels i get a little hyped.

So what your saying is that if sonic a mario had a level editor it would have been stupid and boring?

It is the fact that you use everyday components to make your levels like glue to stick, stickers to paste, motors to run, pistons to push and pull, sensors to trigger, physics as a ruleset and much more in not only a fun way but easily accessible and understandable for anyone. This makes it more akin to Lego and technical Lego rather than 3d studio max!. Add 4 player co-op building, the ability to not only express emotions to each other but point, chat (with lip sync) and slap using some of the most unique and fun use of the Sixaxis so far.

Then add a social networking/Youtube style sharing system with scoreboards on every level, tagging, linked levels, 'if you liked this' linking and more to make the whole thing as competitive as possible. If some people's aspirations are simply to post '1st!' on a website and spend 1000's of hours leveling up a Dwarf hacking x animals to death in repetition simply to be better than the person next to them then surely this is pretty explosive stuff right?

and it's a platformer with great graphics, sense of humor and some 50 levels.

If you cant see what an original game/platformer this is then your probably better playing Halo or UT.
This is how games will go in the future - thank goodness Sony saw the games potential.

You can just check out the manual that was posted on this site. It gaves a break down of what you have to do in the game.
