Is Biohazard the Soft Reboot Horror Fans Have Been Waiting For? - Playstation Enthusiast

Any fan of the horror genre, or really any self-respecting gamer for that matter understands the importance of the Resident Evil franchise in video games. By no means is Resident Evil the first horror game, but it did spark the survival horror genre that we have come to know and generally expect from the type. The first game in the franchise released in March of 1996 and in the two decades that followed, the games have had their share of ups and downs. Progressively, the Resident Evil franchise took slow and steady steps away from survival horror into more blatant action with horror elements peppered across the surface. Such is clearly noticeable come games four, five, and six. The most recent game to adorn any relation to Resident Evil is the not so anticipated Umbrella Corps which even defines itself as a tactical shooter with no mention of the genre which the franchise was built on. Horror fans have been desperate for a return to the roots that made Resident Evil so important, and finally, with Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, the franchise may finally be returning home.

Been a long time fan and am one of those rare one's that liked 4, 5, and 6. From what I've seen so far this is not at all what I want. However since I'm a mega-fan I'll still play it. I'm just hoping it'll be more recognizable as a RE game than what they've shown so far.

naruga2798d ago (Edited 2798d ago )

Capcom screwed this up....this "thing " is not Resident Evil anymore and neither any of the fans waited to see a ridiculous "Outlast 3" from capcom ....if they couldnt understand what was the problem with RE after RE4 , i wished to give us at least one game like RE6 (which has derailed a lot form the path..but at least it was a good TPS, had kept intact the splattering-monsters-with-guns feature, had entertaining gameplay and fun mercs multiplayer)...RE7 is an idiotic ,dump copy of other cliched (and rather mediocre) games, alienating all the damn fans

DeadlyOreo2798d ago

Calm down. The game looks fine lol.

DarkOcelet2798d ago

Wait till you see the final game before judging it like that. This is not Outlast 3, this have weapons, herbs, enemies, etc etc etc.

Errorist762798d ago

So you are saying the last 4 games or so were real Resident Evil games?!

RE7 ... Returning to roots ? Fans ?
I think the development vision of RE7 was crystal clear to everybody
if you want to talk about fans be more specific on what type of "fans" are you referring to
I'm sorry but I don't think us oldschool fans were waiting for another Outlast / Amnesia / P.T clone and looks exactly like thousands of first person indie horror games .. i'm an oldschool RE fan and this game is NOT for me .. case closed.

Have you actually read what the creators discussed regarding the game? In regards to it being like the older Resident Evils it has limited ammo , along with limited health, along with puzzles also making a return that's actually the older Resident Evil concept....

Read..

Mind you what you're saying is a PT clone is merely the teaser , that actually is not the full Resident Evil 7 game, seriously go look up the director has stated regarding the game as opposed to assuming based on a teaser.

_-EDMIX-_2798d ago (Edited 2798d ago )

What's ironic is if you even read what the Creator stated regarding Resident Evil 7 they actually stated that they played Outlast and did not like how helpless and vulnerable you were and that Resident Evil 7 does not leave you that vulnerable you still have ammo, weaponry and health. The very game you're stating you wish it to not be like is what the damn Creator stated it's not like after him playing it himself..... funny

Read.

"the key pillars of the game are fear and horror, exploration of the environment, puzzle-solving elements, resource management, and combat against enemies. Those are all in this game, but we wanted to start off with the first two – horror and exploration – and get you experiencing those two pillars up front. If you’re thinking that because those other elements aren’t in the demo, that they won’t be in the game, that’s not the case. We’re focusing up front about the message of horror coming home in this demo"

You can't argue with them. As "old-tiem" RE fans as they claim to be they should actually be excited for this title, as it is returning to RE's roots.

Instead they seem to want another game like 5 and 6 which they at the same time regard to be the downfall of the series.
Gamers today, seriously...

This right here .. hurts me a LOT
Please for the love of gaming tell me you did not just said that about me ? Who said i want another 5 - 6 RE since i'm that type of fan that prefer 1-3 CVX and want to see more of that style in the survival horror genre and most people in N4G knows me , why are you being so shady to even put random assumptions in defense for RE7 to make others thinks you are the better person .. this is coming from my heart and i don't care how many people hate RE7 or how many others who has the guts to whiteknight it .. besides why are you even associating me with that "Gamers today, seriously..." as if i like gaming state today or as if i'm one of the "newcomers" to gaming .. i have been in gaming since 1996 and my favorite games of all time are Parasite Eve and RE3 .. do i even need to explain myself to tell you how much i despise Capcom for not being themselves at least for once .. just because you or others like what you see that doesn't mean others who like the classic RE games will be forced to like it .. your generalization was absolutely unacceptable and i do not appreciate that , its so sad to see fans sacrificing their nostalgia for the sake of this game since they put this delusional image thinking that that this game will offer what they want but when it comes to reality Capcom's is in panic mode that they don't even know where to go with the franchise , at the end of the day you all will buy the game and give your impressions about it , i myself will blame Capcom for everything happened with that "PewDiePie type of horror" effect since that what they are targeting since Project Kitchen , its not your guys fault if you like it .. be happy with it !

@un- nothing in your post actually explains why Resident Evil 7 is not going to be what the older fans want.

At the end of the day I do not doubt that you are a fan of Resident Evil but I clearly doubt that you've read what Resident Evil 7 actually is...

I'm a fan of all the older Resident Evils and from what I've read from what the creators have actually stated Resident Evil 7 will have puzzles, will have limited ammo, will have limited weaponry and will have an inventory system and focus on Survival elements.

How can you say you don't want Resident Evil to be like Outlast , yet you never read that the creator of Resident Evil 7 has played outlast and Amnesia and has stated Resident Evil 7 is not like those games.....

You're basically panicking and running around crying about what Resident Evil 7 will be without actually stating your sources from where you heard this without actually even understanding that the creators have stated otherwise literally ironically about the exact game you just stated you believed it would be like.

Instead of just being vague about what you believe is happening actually state literally what you do not like about Resident Evil 7 , what feature do you not like? What is either in the game or not in the game that worries you? Because it's starting to sound like a lot of your worry is based on assumption vs fact.

The Resident Evil series has been in first person, before if you are a fan you know this to be fact...

The franchise survived going from fixed third person to over-the-shoulder I'm pretty positive it can survive going first person, those changes did not radically change the gameplay features of Resident Evil as much as the removal of survival elements when Resident Evil 4 5 and 6 released!

Once again if you're going to lean on that it's in first person please understand that the perception changes of Resident Evil did not radically hurt the series as much as the removal of the exact survival elements what were the roots of the genre.

This game has puzzles , has limited ammo, has limited weapons, what exactly what are you worried about that is not being added from the older games?

As an older fan of the series you know what I worry about? I don't care about the camera but I don't care about how the game looks I worry about what I'm doing in the game am I physically actually having real Inventory management? Do I really have limited health? Do I really have limited ammo and have to conserve how much I use? All those have been answered yes !! so for me as an older fan I do not care Resident Evil 7 is very much a day 1 purchase for me just based on those elements alone, if you're going to say you don't like something fully disclose what you're talking about, your entire post has very little to do with Resident Evil 7 or any of its claimed shortcomings.

You want to know what my biggest problem about your post is? Just how uneducated you are about the development of the game.

"I'm sorry but I don't think us oldschool fans were waiting for another Outlast / Amnesia"

This statement is comically ironic to just how little you know about the game, please dear God go read what the creator has stated about the game they are creating. The more you keep saying that the more it shows just how uninformed you are about the actual product you're talking about.

Adrian_v012797d ago (Edited 2797d ago )

Wow, you asked me to not make assumptions but you just made a ton of assumptions about me.

Look how long your post is and it contains no proper argument, just ranting. In all the comments you wrote on this article you have not once said why RE7 will be bad. (Those reasons you have said were not true, but made up.

Also, I don't believe you to be an old-time fan. You should be an adult now in that case, yet you behave and respond like an early teenager.

This I would welcomed, haven’t replayed any of the older games since released years ago. VR would definitely get me to replay them all again. Make it happen Capcom.

MrBaskerville136d ago

Psvr2 version of Re7 and Re2Remake would be fire.

Tacoboto136d ago

Capcom porting anything to SteamVR would be fire.

Petebloodyonion136d ago

You can already play RE 2-3-7-8 on PC via VR mods (Praydog) they offer hand-tracking movement (like PSVR2 Village) and full VR cutscenes.
THE RE7 mod is better compared to the old PSVR version due to hand tracking.

Tacoboto136d ago

Modding != Official Support

Petebloodyonion136d ago

"Modding != Official Support"
And?
You can still play it in VR and worse it shows that this is far from a complicated feat requiring a full studio with tons of money since it's been done by 1 guy working on this mod from time to time.
So basically this could have been done by Capom a long time ago.

And again You should try (it's pretty easy to install) for Res7 for It's improved even on the PSVR version of the game.

Vanfernal136d ago

Spencer Mansion in VR would be AMAZING. That is my favorite video game setting of all time.
