AMD Identifies Project Scorpio as One of its "Design Wins," Is in Support of Microsoft's Goals

During AMD’s Quarterly Financial Conference Call, CEO Lisa Su talked about Microsoft’s Project Scorpio and Xbox One S, identifying Scorpio as one of the semi-custom “design wins” that Su herself mentioned back in April.

AMD must be really impressed with what they've built..the tech must be good. I just hope MS keeps carrying top devs along the entire development process of this console. I've already started saving up for the console.

" AMD must be really impressed with what they've built... the tech must be good"
Well it is there tech so yes they going to say the best thing ever. Once neo is anounce they will say the same thing.

@bigpap, thought power doesn't matter to you? Wonder why it matters now.

VaporCell2828d ago

To me Sony's strategy is for the Neo to be cheap and have just enough power to handle most games with eye candy @ the 1080p res til 4K picks up. Meanwhile the scorpio seems to be overkill for 1080p, and a little short for 4K. Sony will release a proper 4K machine in 3-4 years

NewMonday2827d ago

" Scorpio seems to be overkill for 1080p, and a little short for 4K"

exactly! no mans land, another poorly planed console by MS

vega2752827d ago

@ Newmonday

"Scorpio is a year away from Neo, will be more expensive and with no exclusives,"

First Sony hasn't announced neo yet and the longer they take to do so, the less that year release becomes.

Sony's not going to release the neo this year. Unless they risk eating potential sales of their PSVR which is coming out in October. E3 would have been a better time to announce the Neo instead of just springing it on gamers.

You have to remember not all gamers come to this site or any other for that matter. So they know very little about its existence.

Announcing the neo in September to launch it in November would kill sales for either the neo or VR headset

jznrpg2827d ago

They are impressed by whoever buys their products. As a trader of AMD stock for many years on both sides , Scorpio as of now is a small positive but depending and how well it does it may not make much of a difference long term as Xbox isnt doing as well this gen. Of course during a conference call they will hype up what ever product they are putting their chips into, anf they will do the same for Sony , Nintendo, Lenovo etc

Let's see what sony has up their sleeves I just cannot see them having a 2teraflops less capable machine out in the market for 2 to 3 years.

Even if it's 1 or 0.5teraflops less It wouldnt be to bad but 2tf advantage for the Scorpio is a huge difference.

Sony have said they want this new highend ps4 model to stop people jumping to pc but I cannot see it with the modest upgrade we have had rumored. 4.14tf bottlenecked with the 2.1ghz overclocked low powered cpu.

javauns2828d ago

they probably gonna release the neo and a new ps5 in 2020 ish.

MasterCornholio2828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

That's what I'm guessing. The NEO doesn't sound like their Next gen system to me. Sony is *doing* so well with the PS4 that it's in their best interest to keep producing that system for a little while longer.

YinYangGaming2828d ago

Sony will give up a power advantage if it means squeezing as much out of the PS4 as possible and avoiding billions of $$$ in developing a new console too quickly, PS4 is a MASSIVE success so they'll milk it as much as possible just as Microsoft did last gen with extending the 360 lifecycle

javauns2828d ago

@yinyanggaming, that what i thought too but then they went and started handing out development kits for the neo. I thought they would maximize the popularity and keep riding the wave and just push vr and good games.

Kingthrash3602828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

but they didnt build a new console.
they upgraded the current one. uhhhh man im so sick of misinformation and 180s.
we know nothing about both...and in reality AMD will definitely say positive things about what they are selling.
holla at me when nvidia says they like what AMD has done with scorpio.
kinda like when phil and shu compliment eachother. man yall eat the pr stuff up like candy. funny if it costs 600 bucks or somethin...smh be patient and wait for more info for both neo and scorpio. be a customer, not a unpaid salesman.

I honestly don't think it would matter, Sony could just keep going with the Ps4 and still lead the market.

ONESHOTV22828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

Bobafret-----you and i as PS gamers be honest the ps4 sold as much as it did becuase of the power advantage it had over the xone dont lie to yourself. if MS gets the upper hand dont you think they will pick up more pace the tables can turn at any time man this is a ps gamer telling you this not a MS fanboy

2828d ago
uth112828d ago

If you look back at the history of consoles, weaker often wins.

Price, game selection, brand name ultimately matter more to most people than raw power

BlackTar1872828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

you guys below Bobafret are so delusional it's insane.

Xbox needs games you guys lack games every console generation are you even gamers? Or are you company paid shills?

Oneshot saying over and over you're a PS gamer doesn't convince anyone. HEY GUYS LOOK IM A PS GAMER BUT HAEY GUYS DID I SAY I WAS A PS GAMER? Jesus lord almighty you guys are desperate.

MasterCornholio2828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

@One

"tables can turn at any time "

That's not true. Sometimes it takes years to reverse the situation that a brand is in. Don't expect Xbox to outsell PlayStation by 2:1 anytime soon. Theres a lot more to sales than just power. For example brand loyalty is something that you people never consider. If that didn't exist no Xbox Ones would have been sold.

Death2828d ago

@Blacktar,

What games is Xbox missing? Since Xbox Live launched I have used my Playstation's primarily for exclusives. This gen has been a little underwhelming for me as far as Playstation exclusives go. I'm not sure why some people pretend that every exclusive appeals to everyone. Many of them look like shovelware to me. It all comes down to personal preference. Xbox has more exclusives that I want and I absolutely acknowledge they have less exclusives to pick from. Everyones tastes are different. I'm glad you find more on the Playstation, but that doesn't make it better for everyone.

DarkHeroZX2828d ago

Oneshotv2

Idk about you but power difference meant very little if price was the same at launch. The fact PS4 was slightly cheaper and slightly more powerful meant it was an obvious choice for many on a budget. Also the exclusives made the PS4 the obvious choice for me. Now that my money is better I'm looking at dual Titan X GPUs when that drops august so my Xbox needs will be met.

rainslacker2828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

Power is certainly one consideration people consider, and for some, may be the only consideration depending on their needs. But there's infrastructure, where their friends play, game's available, price, availability, brand perception, console and game quality/quantity/variety, and customer loyalty that all play a big part in many people's decision on what console to buy.

If any company only looks at one of those things, and tries to capitalize and succeed with that one thing, they are destined to fail. Many companies have come out with the notion that more power would win the war, and none of them are making consoles anymore. Most never made it more than a few years with one entry in the market. The one's that are still in the game, are the ones that consider all the factors which drive a consoles success.

vega2752827d ago

@ BlackTar187

You are delusional.

It wasn't that X1 lacked games at all. Cause they are still putting out games and not just halo, gears and forza. This gen has been about Power and the lack of.

Why do you thing andrew house talked about it so much at every E3 but this one. Why? Because they can't anymore which is why they changed the narrative to its about games.

If it wasn't about power why would shu say better rez at 1080p and frame rate makes better gamers. Why? If it's about games

Why would every article about a multiplat games have to be compared x1 versions vs ps4 version.

Lastly. Why make the neo so to keep gamers from moving over or back to PC. Your games should keep them there not a upgraded ps4 cause the vanilla ps4 isn't strong enough.

Christopher2827d ago

I don't think it will have as huge of an impact as the PS4 vs XBO comparisons, but I do think if Scorpio comes out and isn't priced too high it will take off for console gamers. Especially your XBO gamers who buy a lot of games, they'll be upgrading on day 1. And they will lead to more upgrading. And, if Sony doesn't pump out some truly awesome games that look great at 1080p, people will jump ship eventually.

Sony Playstation 4 NEO not a new console. Just High end PS4. It`s same PS4 family. But Xbox Scorpio all new project and new hardware. Of course backward compateble but it`s a new gen console. That`s why coming up 2017 November.

Sony PS4 Neo not match with Scorpio because Sony already working on PS5 and they will release en of 2018. So on that point it`s not make sense to comphare PS4 NEO and Project Scrorpio. Scorpio should match with PS5 not upgraded PS4!
(ESL guy here sorry for English)

str8duval2828d ago

Scorpio is not a new gen console

SpringHeeledJack2828d ago

@duval Scorpio is a new gen console, it's comes out in 2 18 months time and next gen ps5 will be out probably 2 years after that, are you saying MS will release yet another console so soon after Scorpio to be its next gen? Nah Scorpio is it.

Ps4 neo is just a upgrade to handle vr better.

TheCommentator2828d ago

Ironically, the word "neo" literally means new. You also chose to use the same wording, "family," that MS used onstage to describe Scorpio during their reveal. Where does this notion even come from? Is it simply because Scorpio has an entire PS4 worth of extra power over the Neos' rumored specs?

That aside, who told you that Scorpio is all new hardware? MS spent billions on R&D on the XB1 in order to facilitate the DX12 transition, and in spite of the power differences, we continue to see PC GPUs resemble the XB1 architecture more with every generation. That means that Scorpio is likely to be a more powerful XB1, and not a new GPU architecture. I guess it's just hard to justify a 6TF GPU as a .5 upgrade when it's over 4x more powerful than the original console.

seanpitt232828d ago

Ps5 in 2018 haha cmon don't be so daft depending on the neo and how it does will factor in when the ps5 releases and it will not be here until 2020 at the earliest.

Death2828d ago

This must be why some fans are complaining about not seeing Scorpio games, they think it's a new console. It's being marketed exactly like Neo. Fans are the ones making it more than it is.

Christopher2828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

***Scorpio is not a new gen console***

If the hardware specs being discussed are true, it definitely is. You are providing a very noticeable upgrade to the hardware and it will improve graphics and performance. That's next-gen hardware right there, regardless if the platform remains at the same as this generation.

Trying to paint it as otherwise doesn't change that fact at all.

rainslacker2828d ago

MS isn't calling it a next gen console, but based on specs, I'd probably consider it one. They're approaching it from a different viewpoint in terms of generational changes....which is good....but just because MS says it's still an X1, doesn't make it any less next gen. They know they can't call it next gen, because Sony isn't going to call Neo next gen, because doing that so soon into the generation is going to not win them any kind of applause. But essentially, that is what we're getting from both sides....although if rumored specs are to be believed, Neo will be a rather underpowered next gen console.

Both companies have changed the terminology to not look like they're abandoning this generation too soon, and as it stands, they will cater to this gen for as long as they have to to avoid criticism, but ultimately, we are on the precipice of a new generation no matter what some people may wish to call it.

Sparta072828d ago

@nextgengo, don't know why you got so many disagrees. You are correct.
Scorpio is next gen..
I don't know why they keep bringing up neo when they compare specs. They sold compare xboxs and neo.

People are gonna disagree but its cold hard facts. A jag cpu is never gonna be powerful enough to feed a 4+tflop cpu. Its just not enough
Edit: 4+tflop gpu

thisgamer5032828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

the cpu can't feed the cpu huh?

rainslacker2828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

Good thing the CPU doesn't "feed" the GPU(which is what I assume you were referring to). The GPU can run independently of the CPU, and nowadays, mostly does outside of getting variable updates it needs to render a screen, and any of this generations CPU's are more than capable of doing that.

I'm honestly surprised that you got so many agrees considering just how unfactual your comment is. Granted, if you did mean a CPU can't feed a CPU then fair enough. But to my knowledge, no CPU is rated on TFlops, and if the jag CPU is 4 TFlops, I'm sure it can feed itself.

NextGenCeo2828d ago (Edited 2828d ago )

Thanks for all comment guys. Agree or disagree it`s really good to see what all you guys thinking. I read evey single comment. PS4 NEO as you guys can see just mid gen upgrade PS4 console. Same CPU and same memory using. GPU has more GNC core than orjinal PS4. And i think they can support CPU with higher clock rate to achive GPU performans on all terms. And we already know Sony Playstation API is the best console API on the market with Microsoft DX12. Both low level API but Playstation GL is really low level API. (I`m not sure API name but i read before)

So this means especially Sony first party games like Uncharted or God Of War or other games always push system performans and visual to the limits. So on that angle Sony with OC CPU and MEMORY can push more powerfull GPU without bottleneck problem. Of course all of them my idea not offical and we know gaming consoles not working like PC because they usually have 1 type memory and they use APU and every chip almost inside one big silicon... I`m not a tech guy but makes sense to me.

But other hands we have completely new hardware on Project Scorpio. You guys can watch video and can see memory chips. According to Eurogamer Microsoft Xbox Scorpio using 12GB GDDR5 and with 320mb second bandwith. So more and faster memorys need faster CPU! So we already know GPU has 6 Teraflops power. Just think. 12GB GDDR5 memory with 6 Teraflops GPU can`t be perform well with weak or last generation CPU. Even if you go really best overclock or speed rate! You need improve CPU instruction set, clock rate, bandwith support... Means you need all new CPU cores. Because Scorpio jumping from 1 teraflops to 6 teraflops. 8GB DDR3 and 32Mb Esram to 12GB GDDR5 memory. All architecture getting brand new chips.

That`s why I`m saying Xbox Scorpio is all new gaming console and powerfull. Sony can`t catch this kind of powerfull hardware with PS4 Neo atleast with does leaks hardware compenants. And I`m pretty sure Sony will make PS5 move for Scorpio release. And I`m saying again those are just what i`m thinking guys do not get me wrong :D

(Sorry for my English I`m just ESL guy)

Hey I just wanna point out something, PRICING, PRICING and PRICING, every 2yrs a phone manufacture release a phone with incredible price and yet we still buy them or upgrade to them, IF MS choose to offset the difference price where you part trade in your old XB1 for the new console, or half price when you trade in and any w generation console. BUT MS has a very big problem GAMES, I like the idea of Play Anywhere (PAW), but it should be down to 3rd party dev's to decided to make there games (PAW) MS needs more studios they don't have enough and that a problem, yes people talk about exclusive but what is a PC? no matter the make its still powered by windows, and windows a MS platform, the only difference they say XBOX and there partners (PC), Game consoles have never matched a PC power before and now MS is making this a reality, people will always play games either on CONSOLE, PC and Mobile devices, but people are very demanding and we want to play there best game on the move too, mobile devices have become the new handheld and people want that Console/PC quality in there hands, and that's what windows 10 now allows gamers to do across the board, so live or what you have, you are on your gaming tablet on way home from work playing COD or some multiplayer game with someone who is at home on there PC or X1, all of this is possible because of window 10, MS can very much have time exclusive to there (PAW) too where consoles are still given premier position, but this could be unfair to PC gamers and would leave another bad taste in the mouth, what people need to understand is Sony will not build a which will compete side by side with a PowerPC, Scorpio is currently the closest console gamers will get to a gaming PC, the question is this, Is MS willing to release a upgrade every 2-3 yrs to match a $/£1500-2000 PC with a console price at $/£500-600, how many people would upgrade there PC every 2-3yrs if the PRICE IS RIGHT, remember we upgrade phones and currently I believe a PS4/X1 are both cheaper than so high end phones.
PRICING, PRICING and PRICING.

LastCenturyRob2828d ago

It really depends on how much Sony has already invested into the Neo. If they truly were not expecting MS to come out with such a heavy hitter they may be stuck with what they have for the most part. If they scrap it and re-design that will cost a ton and share holders would throw a fit if it deflates the bottom line. My opinion is the Neo will be "tweaked" from where it is now, maybe pushing 4.8 to 5 tflops with an increase in ram if needed.

Gotta wonder what the 3rd one is then... I mean I kinda thought it was Scorpio, X1 S and Neo, but they mention Scorpio but don't want to mention the other 2 so it's not the One S. Could it be NX? That could be interesting!

AMD would then have all the 3 console players as a client! That's kinda awesome :)

Aenea2828d ago

Could be yeah, but there were also rumours IIRC about ARM and nVidia for the NX....

javauns2828d ago

those were debunked based on pricing and other stuff. nintendo is gonna us maybe the polaris 11 chipset. which is more powerful than the ps4 and x1 but not the neo and scorpio. those are the rumors based on a few of nintendo statements. and the face that a dev company said all games can easily be ported so that shows the architecture is very similar to the current consoles. and they already have a deal with amd.

krypt19832828d ago

Nintendo is definitely the 3rd they will go with amd aswell they need there system easy to port to

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil5d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19924d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop4d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom3d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor4d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog4d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit4d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

timeextension.com
ApocalypseShadow9d ago

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle8d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it. I didn't even know there was a war going on between these companies but I do remember thinking why I can't play Sonic cartridge on Nintendo or Mario on Sega :D
