14 Xbox One Exclusives You Can't Play Anywhere Else

Literally only on Xbox One.

This article was worth reading merely for the line "Over the past few years, the word 'exclusive' has seen more stretches than a yoga class." Seriously though, the Xbox One has some great titles.

UltimateMaster2844d ago

Anyome using the word "exclusive" should add what kind of exclusive it is.
Timed exclusive
Console exclusives
Console + PC exclusives
Platform exclusive
DLC exclusive (timed in some cases)

s45gr322844d ago

Exclusive only on one platform or gaming service. The rest is just multiplatform.

starchild2844d ago

@s45gr32

That's not the definition of the word. Multiplatform and exclusive are not opposites like you seem to think. A game can be both multiplatform and exclusive.

For example, a game can be available on Windows, Mac and Linux (i.e. three different platforms) and therefor be called multiplatform, but would still correctly be called a PC exclusive as well.

Google dictionary gives the following relevant definitions:

adjective: exclusive

1.
-excluding or not admitting other things.
"my exclusive focus is on San Antonio issues"

-(of terms) excluding all but what is specified.

2.
restricted or limited to the person, group, or area concerned.
"the couple had exclusive possession of the condo"

Dictionary.com gives a similar definition:

3. limited to the object or objects designated

macmillandictionary.com offers a similar definition as well:

-"limited to a particular person, thing, or group and not shared with others"

So, clearly there is nothing about the word that restricts its use to express exclusivity to only one thing. The word can be equally applied to just a single object/thing/person/platform or to more than one object/thing/person/platform (whatever that thing is that something is exclusive to).

This all makes sense when you understand that the word "exclusive" is related to the verb "to exclude". Its meaning is "so as to exclude" (from the medieval Latin word "exclusivus").

It is a word that allows us to quickly specify which things are included and which things are excluded. In this context "exclusive to" is synonymous with "limited to" or "restricted to".

If a game site reports that Quantum Break, for example, is "exclusive to Xbox One and Windows 10" they are using the word correctly. The meaning is clear: the game can only be played on Xbox One or Windows 10 and all other gaming platforms are EXCLUDED. You could also use the terms "restricted to Xbox One and Windows 10" or "limited to Xbox One and Windows 10" and they would convey essentially the same meaning.

343_Guilty_Spark2844d ago

Microsoft platform Exclusive.

MasterCornholio2844d ago

Ive made that mistake before.

I'm sorry because of it. But from know on I'll be very specific with those terms.

Mystogan2844d ago (Edited 2844d ago )

It's simple.

Console Exclusive = Only Available on a given Console brand. But available on PC or Handheld as well.
Exclusive = Only Available on a Console, Handheld or PC.

rainslacker2844d ago

Personally, I try to just consider it on the terms of console exclusive...with maybe the timed modifier added where appropriate. I think the vast majority of us are primarily console gamers, so I see no real need to consider if something is on PC for arguments sake....except maybe in some specific instances where fan boys are involved.

Trying to keep up with where else it can be played does get a bit tedious.

@Thom9434

It might be a funny line, but the implication is wrong. The word "exclusive" does not refer to something only available on one single platform. It just allows us to quickly explain a restriction in availability to whichever platform or platforms we specify. That is the true meaning of the word in this context.

UltimateMaster has the right idea. You have to specify which platform(s) something is exclusive TO.

rainslacker2844d ago (Edited 2844d ago )

The word is more about the context it's used in than the actual definition.

There are many qualifiers for exclusives of many sorts, and ultimately, everyone will use whatever qualifier to suit whatever argument they happen to be trying to make in a particular thread...sometimes using the word differently in the next thread should it suit their purpose.

Problem comes in when people ignore the context, and try to twist the definition beyond what the original commentor meant, to try and get the argument back on their side.

It's pretty dumb we have to even discuss what exclusive means these days, or that we have to go to extraordinary lengths to qualify the context just to avoid having our words twisted around to mean something else.

Exclusive up until maybe the middle of last gen, has almost always meant that it was only available on one console platform. PC and usually handhelds were never a consideration, but god knows it certainly is being made into a consideration now.

But hey, people seem to love pointless arguments that go nowhere, so to each their own.

starchild2843d ago

@rainslacker

I think the meaning is pretty obvious and clear-cut. People are trying to twist its original meaning now to suit certain fanboy agendas, but that's not because the word itself is unclear.

I use the word in a consistent way. And most people in the gaming media have long used it correctly as well. We've had terms like Sony exclusive or PC exclusive or console exclusive, even though the specified games may be found on more than one platform.

It's only very recently that I've heard people claim the word MUST refer to something exclusive to only one platform. This, however, is false and I will make an effort to correct it every time I see it simply because I don't want to see the propagation of falsehoods and the bastardization of the English language.

rainslacker2843d ago

I think the meaning itself is pretty clear also. My point was more that people twist the context to suit an argument as opposed to just using the word the way it was meant to be.

While I have seen much more qualifying of what kind of exclusive people are talking about in the past 5 years or so, what I ultimately see is that people just don't take the word to mean that something is exclusively available in one place. Maybe things have just changed to the point where PC or handhelds are more of a consideration, and given the current changes, it makes sense. But it only really makes sense in the fan boy connotation that the qualifier can bring.

Typically, I use it in a consistent way as well. Unless I'm responding to some trollish comment, I mean it's only available on one console. Because of this, I think MS does have its exclusives for Xbox, but at the same time, it doesn't require an XBox to play them. Same way...lets say SFV...can only be played on PS4....but doesn't actually require a PS4 to play it.

I find the simple definition of the term, for the community that we're residing in, would be much more proficient to just get the point across that you can only play some games on a certain console...leaving all platforms that aren't consoles out of the equation. Certainly, a game being available on PC or handheld as well can be relavent at times, but more often than not, the term just gets twisted so people can take their shots in the console war.

I think for the most part, the media has been very consistent in how they use the term, or at least clearly state their context. It's what I'd expect from a article discussing such things. Some of the opinion pieces go crazy with it for their own click bait nonsense, but the gaming sites trying to speak without that do fine.

Anyhow, I have nothing against you trying to correct people. I do so often. It's just the fan boys where I twist their own logic against them, typically when they're hyping something up more than I would consider healthy. I slip sometimes and get a bit trollish myself, but I prefer to at least try to keep things in check for better discussion....and my comments get too long if I have to over qualify everything.

"the Xbox One has some great titles."

It sure does.

:)

I'm a PS4 owner and even I'm capable of admitting that. I'm only interested in SSO but I know plenty of gamers who enjoy titles like Forza, Forza Horizon, GEARS, Halo, Quantum Break, SSO and Inside.

I'm happy that Xbox gamers have some really neat games to play.

travestyj2844d ago

You can play all the games in Rare Replay somewhere else and FH2 is on the Xbox 360.

oasdada2844d ago (Edited 2844d ago )

Just because the article is stressing "Only on XBOX ONE" let me point out that forza horizon 2 was also on xbox360

meche3342844d ago

Thats true but its still xbox exclusive just like the games that are xbox one and windows 10 exclusives are still xbox exclusives because they can only be played under windows 10 store which is apart of xbox ecosystem

Looking forward to all those games and I hope the rumors about a new battletoads game are true too. Can't wait to hear more about Sea of thieves and too bad I have to wait so long to get a Scorpio.

SCW19822835d ago

I get what your saying Chris but I grew up buying a console for its exclusives. Ridiculous that my comment was marked as inappropriate.

darthv722835d ago

I grew up playing a console for the games available. Not specifically the exclusives. There is a segment who believes exclusives are the only reason to buy something. I'm glad I'm not part of that segment. Seems to be rather limiting being part of that mindset.

On a side note, perhaps the author should state MS exclusives just like there are some that would say Sony exclusives or Nintendo exclusives. Not particularly platform specific but more the platform holder instead.

SCW19822835d ago

I agree darth but what happens when every game on that console can be ran on a piece of equipment you already have at same or better specs. What's the point of having the console anymore. That's what frustrates me, I have no reason anymore to have my One. I guess you could make the argument for halo but I am not a huge fan of halo so that doesn't matter to me.

darthv722835d ago

"What's the point..." the point is there are people who simply prefer to have the console. No matter of trying to tell them how this is better than that is going to change their mind. That is the beauty of personal choice.

If you want to play games the way you like then... that is your choice. It's not mine to tell you that you are doing it wrong but there is a mentality out there that truly believes that if people are doing it different than them... those people are wrong. Plain and simple.

Choice is never a bad thing yet here we are seeing people trying to say it is. Saying having a choice to either play on a console or play on a PC is wrong. I can play all manner of games past, present and future from one box but I choose to play them on various boxes because it is what I like. i like playing nintendo games on various nintendo hardware when i could play them all on my xbox or PC. Same with playing playstation games on my PC but I prefer to play them on playstation hardware.

Playing xbox games on a PC is a very viable option but in the end... yup I rather prefer to play them on xbox hardware. It's my choice and so I exercise my choice while not ridiculing others for doing something different. to each their own but we are all in the same hobby for the same reason. We enjoy gaming, so everyone should play how they want without persecution.

Lennoxb632835d ago (Edited 2835d ago )

@SCW1982
"what happens when every game on that console can be ran on a piece of equipment you already have at same or better specs."

But you're talking about a small group of gamers who have a PC who can run these games at even the level of the Xbox One. You're acting like just because they're available on PC that anybody with a PC can play them.

starchild2834d ago

@SCW1982

Ugh.. this is getting plain ridiculous now. I truly can't understand how this is being twisted into a bad thing. I'm a PC gamer and I'm very happy that Microsoft is supporting the PC fully now with their games.

It's almost like some of you want to be forced to buy a piece of redundant hardware in order to play a handful of exclusives. How in the world is that a good thing?

I guess you would also cheer if Sony decided to make some of their Sony Pictures films exclusive to a particular model of Sony Blu-ray player. Instead of being able to enjoy those movies on the Blu-ray player of your choice (or Blu-ray drive in your PC) you have to buy a Sony Blu-ray player to be able to watch them. Would that really be desirable to some of you?

I'm happy the gaming industry is maturing and things are opening up a bit. I think Microsoft's play anywhere initiative is great for gamers.

Godmars2902834d ago

"Choice is never a bad thing yet here we are seeing people trying to say it is."

Choice when there's real honest value to it. When additional cost applies. Getting added features for something you bought you otherwise wouldn't or have to use, like the PS2 playing movie DVDs, is an example of good choice.

With MS however, more often than not, there additional costs and requirements when they use "choice". The HD-DVD add on for the 360. Needing Windows 10 to play XB1 games *and* a system that can run those games besides.

Haru2834d ago

It's n4g please, on the side note it's a bit funny watching all those website disperatly trying to make up xbox excluives when even Microsoft stated that xbox will have no more exclusivs

freshslicepizza2834d ago

@Godmars290
"Choice when there's real honest value to it. When additional cost applies. Getting added features for something you bought you otherwise wouldn't or have to use, like the PS2 playing movie DVDs, is an example of good choice."

play anywhere can add value, what are you rambling on about now?

"With MS however, more often than not, there additional costs and requirements when they use "choice". The HD-DVD add on for the 360. Needing Windows 10 to play XB1 games *and* a system that can run those games besides."

do you ever have a point? you as a consumer now have additional options to play games like forza horizon and those options are no longer limited to the console hardware. so tell me again about no value? as an xbox one owenr you still get those great games and now you can also play with a larger audience since we all know some games have issues finding a decent amount of players to play with. more sales also translates into a healthier market. so again i ask where is there no value?

rainslacker2834d ago

I just grew up playing games. The concept of exclusives was nothing like it is today....at least I didn't view it like that. I mean I knew Super Mario World was on NES, and Sonic the Hedgehog was on Genesis, but I wanted both systems because I wanted to play the games there were. I never even knew about multi-plats, just brought games I wanted to play.

Now I buy more for exclusives, because there are a lot more choices open to me though. I'll likely always buy a PS console because it's provided me with most of what I look for, and does a fine job of delivering, so it's the exclusives on other consoles that will compel me to buy them or not. but it's easier to be informed nowadays compared to when I was a kid.
