Could PS4 Exclusive Spiderman Be The First Superhero Game Console Seller?

There are many reasons why Spiderman being exclusive is an absolute travesty for all gamers. First off this is Spiderman, not some new game cooked up by Sony, he has been one of the most iconic and established character in the entertainment for a very long time.
My problem with Spiderman being exclusive is the amount of people who will be denied to play as him. And that's the Xbox, PC, and Nintendo community. I understand that Sony has rights to the Spiderman franchise but that doesn't give them the right to deny other communities apart from its own to experience Spiderman.

Now if you think Sony has all rights to do what they want with a renown franchise like Spiderman, then take this as an example of what could happen in the future. Xbox could just see the success of Spider-man then they would want their own superhero franchise. Let's say they make an X-men game and make it exclusive to their console. Now you have 2 of the best superhero games for 2 different platforms and a very fragmented community.

I know Sony love to have a plethora exclusive games but this is a game that doesn't belong to them but belongs to everyone. Imagine what Stan Lee would think if he knew that a Spider-man isn't available for everyone, he would absolutely want all to experience this Spiderman game. FYI I only own a PS4 and no other consoles so I'm not port begging.

TGGJustin2870d ago

If any of those other owners want a Spider Man game then they can go out and play the ones that are out. Spider Man games have been bad a long time because no effort is put into them. Marvel went to Sony and asked them if they could do treat Spider Man like they treat their exclusives like Uncharted. That means a very good quality game. I see nothing wrong with that.

ShadowKnight2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

Insomniac is a great developer!!

saywat2472869d ago

get the best console out right now. ps4. it has been dominating since release and still is and will continue to do so. problem solved.

thejigisup2869d ago

only thing wrong with that is that this hasn't happened earlier.

XisThatKid2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

Edit: With great power comes great exclusivity. Buy a PS4 to play it bottom line

The difference here is that with Sony backing now we can guarantee that it won't be half assed like the past installments were when they were being handled by Activision. I'm honestly psyched for it. If this succeeds which I'm pretty sure it will be I honestly see either franchises following its step. I'm all for it as long as there's quality.

ninsigma2870d ago

First:
"I understand that Sony has rights to the Spiderman franchise but that doesn't give them the right to deny other communities apart from its own to experience Spiderman"

If Sony has the license rights, they absolutely have the right to make it exclusive.

Second:
Sony don't have the entire spiderman franchise rights, they just have the movie rights. It was Marvel who approached them asked them to create a spiderman game and treat it like a first party game. Basically make a quality game like they usually do.

TGGJustin2870d ago

Exactly. You can probably expect this to be the best Spider Man game ever made. Could do for Spider Man what Rocksteady did for Batman.

Majin-vegeta2870d ago

Except Marvel approached Sony with the idea.

* He then explained that Spider-Man is one of the first true partnerships between the first and third party segments of the company. Marvel came to Sony’s first party and said that they would love to see one of their properties treated with the preference with which first parties treat their heroes.

2pacalypsenow2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

Then buy a damn Ps4 if you don't have one then it should make you want to buy one, that's the point of exclusives they are supposed to give you a reason to buy their console over the competition, why is it so hard for people to understand this, Sony doesn't care if people who are not interested in buying their Hardware don't get to play their games and why should they?

XisThatKid2869d ago

HOW is this concept lost on people?!

ShaunCameron2869d ago

@ XisThatKid

Simple. People think they're entitled to have it all.

mafiahajeri2869d ago

You make it seem like no one has done this before. No one bats an eye when Nintendo have complete rights to pokemon, eh? But when Sony does something similar their the devil...

mkis0072869d ago

No one is denied to play Spiderman...there is no one blocking the purchase of a ps4.

Tdmd2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

I'm sorry but I'm quite happy it's a sony exclusive game as that means it'll most certainly have sony quality behind it. Spider-Man games haven't being even decent since ps2 era. This is a Icon that deserves the weight of a triple A exclusive game - and it'll have that now that Insomniac is developing it. Just look at what have they achieved with R&C! I'm psyched!

Fin_The_Human2869d ago

Does Marvel vs Capcom not count as a Super Hero video game seller?

JEECE2869d ago

Mario is one of the most iconic characters in entertainment too. Heck, Master Chief was ten years ago. Just because a character reaches a certain level of popularity doesn't mean everyone somehow deserves to have the games that character is in. By your logic, every game featuring a popular character should be a mobile game, since that is the way most people would experience the game.

Sony makes great titles when they publish them; would you rather have a Spider-Man game on the level of the Infamous games, and only have it on PS4, or have yet another mediocore to bad movie tie-in from a company like Activision that is built on the lowest common denominator and ported everywhere imaginable? I'll take the quality game, and I'm guessing millions of other people will too. Given that this game is probably a year away at least, and with the impending PS4 Neo, the cost of a standard PS4 is likely to be sub-$300 by the time this is out, so no one who has enough $ to buy an Xbox One or a Wii U/NX is prohibited from buying a PS4 to play this game.

jessionpc2869d ago

R-RETARD.

Spiderman isn't a videogame, it's just a franchise... It got some games, on all platforms, on several different consoles in the past. There IS NO continuity...

Tomb raider was an insult, because it was a SERIES that was available on both beforehand...

THIS is just a new insomniac exclusive ip that just HAPPENS to be Spiderman.

Stop crying a biiiig river you cute little baby.

Drop the shitbox, get the prostation.

joeorc2869d ago

What about Linux or mac getting the same PC games as windows Does?

Or is that not ok also to choose for Microsoft Windows Os to get those PC games to be exclusive but not linux or Mac, how come they have to be over looked for games.

GetSomeLoGiK2869d ago

"I understand that Sony has rights to the Spiderman franchise but that doesn't give them the right to deny other communities apart from its own to experience Spiderman." This is one of the most redundant sentences I have read. Since Sony does have rights, it does give them the right to deny it to other consoles. The reality of it, is that is how business is done and when it comes down to it, the video game industry is a business.

Hroach6162869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

Buy both consoles and stop being a fanboy. Problem solved. These consoles have been out for 3 years almost. There is no excuse other than self imposed video game console solidarity not to have both consoles at this point. Let Sony make a GOOD Spider-Man game. Let Microsoft make an xmen game if that's what they are wanting to do. REAL gamers will play them both regardless of what console they are one.
So tired of all this Spider-Man being exclusive whining after only 1 day

Fatal-Aim2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

LoL @ Spurg

Dude......Really? LoL! Sony owns the rights to the character. It doesn't matter that no one else can play the game. Buy a PS4. If they own the rights, they can do what they want. Why the heck would they look at the people not interested in their console and publish the game and allow it on their competitor's platform just because some of the fans on that system are unhappy? How are you even attempting to argue this? You sound so desperate. Lmao!

P_Bomb2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

@spurg
Everything you're saying can also be applied to Microsoft who plucked random titles from franchises on Playstation, and made them exclusive to Xbox.

Splinter Cell Conviction forever splintered that franchise on PlayStation. One random Xbox exclusive in a series that was multiplat before and after.

They nabbed an exclusive Ace Combat and Beautiful Katamari for 360 too.

Nabbed Dead Rising 3 after Dead Rising 2 was on PS3. I should know, I have Dead Rising 2 on PS3. Had to get its prequel DLC on 360.

Rise of the Tomb Raider. Nuff said. Hell MS bought Minecraft outright. Who knows what the future holds there. In the end, I don't have much sympathy for them as a content distributer.

As for what Stan Lee would think? Lol, He's probably just happy Marvel didn't go BANKRUPT. Sony buying Spider-man, Fox buying Xmen, along with Fantastic4/Daredevil/GhostRide r/Punisher/Blade/Hulk being sold off kept the company afloat over 15 years ago. Stan tends to like what he's paid to like. Even Capt America being retconned as a mole for Hydra didn't make him blink.

Aloy-Boyfriend2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

Oh my god AHAHAHAHAHA

Th kind of shit the console loyalist say hahaha.

Sony isn't taking Spiderman from anyone. They are making Spiderman better and giving him and Marvel the treat it deserves.

If you are on Xbox or PC. Too fkin bad. Get a PS4 if you are such a fan of Spiderman

If Microsoft gets Xmen or whatever superhero IP, I'd be fine with it. Marvel is open with any capable publisher and developer to do it. THE PROBLEM IS NO ONE IS INTERESTED IN COMIC SUPERHERO GAMES AND MOST OF THEM HAVE THE SUPERMAN EFFECT.

Other than Batman Arkham series, we've only got crap movie tie in superhero games. Spiderman has been the worst offender. Any publisher who can give a shit about these IPs and make a damn good game is welcomed.

What truly makes em laugh is your sympathy. No Xbox or Pac player will feel sympathetic when you can't pkay your exclusives. They will tell you to get the console the game is designed for, and nothing more. You have a PS4? Good for you! They can get one if they wish

miyamoto2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

LOL!
Sony has the publishing rights on all the exclusive and multiplat Spider-Man games since the first Spider-Man game on the PSOne.
That is the deal they signed with Marvel many years ago. So stop the whining. Sony has been very generous to its competitors like Nintendo and Microsoft for decades now. Decades!
Activision has been their long time publishing partner for multi-plats ever since.

"Well since [chairman] Howard Stringer came in, and now under [president and CEO] Kazuo Hirai’s leadership I think we talk more than we ever have. The whole “One Sony” vision is that we’re aware of what everybody else is doing, and doing everything we can to work together.

But I think if you forced everybody down the same path we would be uncompetitive in all areas. I mean, at the end of the day, why wouldn’t you make the new Spider-Man game exclusive to the PlayStation platform? Well, because Sony Pictures is trying to monetize and make that franchise as big as possible, and going multi-platform is in the best interest of Sony Pictures. So the game is an Activision game." - Jack Tretton

Bathyj2869d ago

But Marvel absolutely do have the right to say who makes their game.
And guess who they chose?
Guess who they trusted to do a good job?

After years of shitty games Marvel said we want a good one and Sony is the company to make that happen.
Would you have Sony say No, I think some Xbox players will be pissed if we do that, we better not.

Make no mistake, this was a dead franchise, and now everyone wants it because of whose involved. Its not like Tombraider which was an in demand franchise mainly because of the fans on Sony consoles who supported the reboot and brought that series back from the dead, only to have MS swoop in with a bag of cash and say now that its popular again we want to pay to keep it away from the fanbase that supported it for nearly 2 decades.

Frankly I dont see how Xbox gamers have the nerve to complain about this but Im loving that you are. Maybe you'll start to question some of the shill tactics MS uses next time they purchase a game that they did nothing to make great, but somehow I doubt it. You'll just say, but you guys got Spiderman so its fair, and not even take the circumstances of the arrangement into consideration.

thejigisup2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

actually they do have the ability to do whatever they want with this franchise. That's what it means to own it. I'm sure stan lee would like the best possible game to represent a character that he has put so much work in to. The thing is Insomniac games is amazing and if they want to dedicate themselves to one console to make the best game possible they should be afforded of that option. , nuff said.

No lol. It does look fantastic tho.

Fin_The_Human2869d ago (Edited 2869d ago )

It does I wonder what engine they are using.

Also that white spider on his chest is starting to grow on me...hated it at first but it brings some character and uniquness to this spiderd man.

GameBoyColor2869d ago

Yeah man, I thought it was weird cuz I believed it was stitched flat into his costume, but looking at it closely and that the logo has depth makes it look badass to me for some reason.

Gridknac2869d ago

Yeah, still hate it. The white is just jarring with the red and blue background. Hope there is alt suits or something cuz that shit is just ugly.

mkis0072869d ago

will most definetly be. Spiderman is going to be huge again with the MCU stuff.

goldwyncq2869d ago

As a massive Spiderman fanboy, this greatly pleases me. It's been forever since we've had an awesome Spidey game.

JEECE2869d ago

It seems like single games are "system sellers" a lot less often than they used to be. I doubt many people will buy PS4s just to play this one game, but I do think that the knowledge that a Spider-Man game is coming, in combination with games that are out now (like UC4 and Overwatch) and other games that are coming soon (like Battlefield 1, No Man's Sky, RE:7, and Horizon, as well as annual games like COD and NBA2K) could help push people towards upgrading to PS4 from PS3.
