An in-depth look at the development of a legendary British studio's final, unreleased game.
“I reckon [Phil Spencer] feels bad about Lionhead, but I think for him, he has to run all of Microsoft Studios as a business,” they say. “First-party studios isn’t doing so well. Halo 5 is a big miss, versus projections. Minecraft is a big miss, versus projections. Compared to either one of those, Lionhead is practically a rounding error. But I think if your division is under-performing, you have to go to your boss with something on the altar.” “When we started the project we weren’t aware of Windows 10,” says a source. “We were going to ship on Xbox One initially and then we wanted to come out on PC at a later point, most likely though Steam. But we got burnt quite badly.” “Without Steam, without other platforms, it was just painful,” says another. “The Windows Store is a giant disaster. It’s on fire. 98% of PC copies of Rise of the Tomb Raider, a flagship Windows 10 game, were bought on Steam." This is why they are trying to transition Xbox fans to PC.
And they're doing it completely wrong with UWP, maybe even in the worst way possible.
this shows everything wrong with Xbox 1st party, driven by mandate not creative vision it destroyed once big studios like Rare and now Lionhead
I'm a bit confused by this. Would a Lionhead employee have access to things like Halo 5, Minecraft, Windows 10 projections? For all we know this could just be a disgruntled ex-employee. I concede that Halo 5 underperformed vs. previous mainline entries but aren't Windows 10 and Minecraft doing well?
"Would a Lionhead employee have access to things like Halo 5, Minecraft, Windows 10 projections?" Developers are human beings who talk to each other and other humans at parties and things like that. Surprising, I know. Look at all the leaks for games that happen for reference.
No need to be condescending on the matter, it doesn't change the fact that this source provided zero actual evidence. Sounds more like a disgruntled ex-employee making up playground rumours to me.
"this source provided zero actual evidence" Plenty of things with zero factual evidence get taken as true. Like Scorpio and Neo for example or Suckerpunch developing Spiderman for PS4. Say what you want about Kotaku they're super solid when it comes to rumors.
@Yingyang Lol. Same here. It's pretty confusing. The same article was put up on reddit a few mins ago and this guys response best sums up my feelings on the matter. “what source is exactly saying that stuff? (if it's an ex-lionhead employee, I imagine it's a pretty unhappy/disgruntled one due to the closure of the studio, so strong bias against microsoft is probably present and I don't imagine microsoft goes around their studios sharing sales from games of other studios everywhere. So, it's also pretty likely the source is just making up these claims to make microsoft look bad). I dunno about Halo, but I imagine microsoft is very happy with minecraft. Haven't the sales actually increased since it bought the game? And if Halo 5 actually was that bad of a miss, I don't think we'd be seeing the constant support of the game with its free updates still, let alone all of the tournaments for the game.” Anyways I can't wait to see what MS have planned for E3.
You mean how Microsoft took down Lionhead.
