Square Enix Plans To Take Over Tecmo

Today at 1pm Japan Time, Square Enix will be outlining its plans for a friendly takeover troubled game maker Tecmo. Square Enix's takeover would help the company gain a stronger foothold in the U.S. market with popular Tecmo titles like the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive games. What's more, Tecmo's games will help strengthen Square Enix's current portfolio, which is heavily dependent on RPGs.

This isn't the first time Square Enix has moved in on a beleaguered company. In August 2005, Square Enix acquired Taito and wholly owned the company as a subsidiary by September 2005.

The story is too old to be commented.

enix was quite small and they are now square enix...will they now be square enix tecmo?

ninja gaiden multiplatform not guaranteed considering the vast amount of 360 exclusives SE is spewing out to decent but not great reviews...

morganfell3764d ago (Edited 3764d ago )

All the more reason for them to go Multiplatform. A title that is single platform and is under performing doesn't get left on that same platform alone on which it is under performing. The first thought is, "Time to shake things up" You can bet Sony will be doing the full court press.

You especially don't avoid the platform that has been shown to produce a very sleek version and also happens to be the platform growing worldwide at a much faster pace than the original hardware.

Microsoft's so dumb, they should have bought the company, or atleast hire Itagaki.

Trapt was a Bad A$$ game for the PS2 video proof!

Bnet3433764d ago

Doesn't matter, Tecmo is pretty much souless without Team Ninja so I don't know what SE hopes t get from this. What Fatal Frame? for Wii? Uh huh, ok ... have fun with that. :P

square's a pretty big company, but Im pretty sure their currently not rolling on cash....wouldn't it be smarter to put that money into new projects and not spend it all on a failing company that lost alot of employees?

And the lest goes on...

Almost every SE game is a hit, they're the "EA" of japan.

Tecmo, regardless of its current financial status, still carries a powerful brand image in the industry. And with its current situation, this is a great time to pick them up at a cheap price. So it's a pretty smart and timely corporate move.

HOWEVER, as a consumer, I'm a little shocked by this. The Square-Enix, Sammy-Sega, Bandai-Namco all sorta made sense to me, but this one... somehow throws me off for some reason. It feels kind weird... kinda of EA-ish, if you will.

Oh well... I guess it was meant to happen eventually, but I see more and more Japanese companies become investor-driven corporations rather than entertainment companies.
