Traveller's Tales buys Embryonic

Traveller's Tales, the UK developer behind the hit Lego Star Wars series, has acquired Cheshire-based firm Embryonic Studios for an undisclosed sum.

Embryonic was founded in 2005 by Nick Elms, formerly of Warthog and Digital Anvil, and went on to create original IP such as Privateer, Brute Force and Starlancer.

The studio also produced a number of licensed titles including Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Star Trek: Invasion and Battlestar Galactica.

Embryonic currently employs 20 staff, while there are 120 employees working at Traveller's Tales Knutsford HQ. Traveller's Tales has previously developed games based around characters such as Crash Bandicoot and Sonic the Hedgehog, and won the best gameplay award for Lego Star Wars II at last year's BAFTAs.

"We are delighted to have completed the acquisition," said Traveller's Tales boss Jon Burton.

"Embryonic possess a very talented workforce that will help drive Traveller?s Tales on to further success."
