From PS3 Attitude, Brodiesan writes: "Though lauding the likes of GTAIV and Bioshock there are only two games del Toro considers good enough to warrant the moniker of "masterpiece": Ico and Shadow of the Colossus..."
and different. Their games are special, not everyone can enjoy them the way they are meant to be. But if you can, you will come to know why they are masterpieces.
The game was pretty good, because it made me think "why couldn't other developers do this or think of this" DEFEATING the last Colossus was MOMENTUS. Although it had it share of flaws but the feeling of finally reaching the Colossus and going "Holy SH*T" was awesome.
i have to disagree. Though these 2 were unparalleled in their respective genres. Capcom's Clover Studios blew me away twice wit Viewtiful Joe and Okami and not just cuz of their graphics design
Viewtiful Joe while it's was a good game...it should never be compared to games like Ico or Okami.....
Maybe not directly compared, but im talkin about in comparison to the subject of this article. Ppl play diff games for diff reasons and though I loved Ico and SOTC for their deliverance, i equally (or perhaps a tad bit more) loved Okami and VJ for entirely diff reasons and i feel they both can earn a spot on that board. If u really wanna dig i think LOK: Soul Reaver is above them all
Like it or not both games are simply fantastic. Sure there weren't huge commercial successes they stand alone as truly unique games in the crowded gaming market. I can't wait for the PS3 follow up title.
"Like it or not both games are simply fantastic. Sure there weren't huge commercial successes they stand alone as truly unique games in the crowded gaming market." That`s why I like Sony SO MUCH, because they still completely support devs like Team Ico regardless of sales because of the "product" their delivering. Which is truly amazing from a business sense. This is something I feel MSFT is scared to do, when you look a what 1st party stuff they do have.
Tried to give you tons a bubbles, it won,t let me.. agreed by the way
Team ICO games ARE masterpieces. it's hard to pull off such emotion with little story telling and dialogue.
FFVII was close to the first game that was a real masterpiece.
The source of the story is appropriately stated (twice) in the full article. Thanks, Brodiesan
You are actually going against the N4G guidelines by using this article instead of the original interview. It should really be the original source getting the hits, not this story.
I didn't actually submit the story. It was submitted by the editor of PS3Attitude. The original story has been accredited as the source since this story's original submission. Apologies for any N4G guideline infringements.
My God, that will be the day.
My God THAT would be the day
I agree with both of you guys. I love Legacy of Kain. Also i never played Shadow of Colossus or Ico sadly even though my girlfriend owns SoC. I should probably pick up Ico on the cheap though.
sadly, i cant find Ico anywhere :(
Get Ico, shadow is unbelievable in its scope and scale, but ico really struck me.Your only weapon is a stick, and few games i have ever seen have made me feel like this.Team Ico are absolutely brilliant, and borrow it from a friend if you can. enjoy General
Yep, you won't find ICO for very much under $40. I have a hardback copy, but it's not for sale. And Shadow of the Colossus hardback. And your only weapon is not just a stick. You get a sword, unless you didn't finish t. you can also find a mace, and for a bit of comedy, a phallicly emotive light saber.
i forgot about the sword, although, as we both know, not too much fighting...just enough, and very well done too
but it won't play in my fat PS2. It's a blue coated disk. I have a 40gb PS3 so no luck there. I plan on buying a new PS2 before they go the way of the dodo.
I saw Ico at Circuit City for 10 bucks back when i was buying my girlfriend a birthday present. I'm surprised i didn't buy it back then. I could probably still find it. I think.
No trouble Amp. You may have seen the normal copy for $10, but that had a rerun and even it's becoming rare. I have the card version.
What's the difference between them?
"Yep, you won't find ICO for very much under $40." I direct you not only to gamestop.com but amazon.com. With that said....I was able to find both at a local gamestop used without the red greatest hit label.
No zelda ocarina of time?
Only Ico and Shadow of the Colossus have conveyed emotion using the video game as the medium, and not the text. There has been no other large-scale game that has done that yet. Zelda is no exception, especially with its shallow characters and happy-go-lucky good vs. evil themes. Not to mention the story is always the same.
"Only Ico and Shadow of the Colossus have conveyed emotion using the video game as the medium, and not the text." really interesting... i'd never thought of it that way. makes sense
But uses a very different kind of approach than Team Ico. If you've seen Pan's Labyrinth, you'd understand why the developer would choose Team Ico's games as the only classics by his standards.
"If you've seen Pan's Labyrinth, you'd understand why the developer would choose Team Ico's games as the only classics by his standards." what?! i have seen that movie and i don't understand what are you talking about.
I think that's fair. It's the onyl game where I felt sorry within gameplay, rather than within text or narrative of cutscene. Taking those creatures down is meant to affect you. And the only part that annoyed me, was mixed with an air of inevitability, and was never taken out of the gaming experience. Was when Agro fell.
I kind of think that Del Toro is talking as a movie director, and not as a gamer. I'm sure if he spoke this with his gamer perspective, that he'd list a few more games. Maybe not, I dunno.
i agree, shadow of the colossus was and is still today, one of the greatest games of all time, it took a different approach and it succeeded
ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are definantly my top favorite PS2 games and I loved them both.... I've beaten Shadow of the Colossus about 4 or 5 times and I completed ICO 2 or 3 times... along with Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Sony Santa Monica, Team ICO is one of my favorite Sony 1st party studio.
Outside of Sony First Party studios they are still my favourite developers. I just cannot wait for ICO3/TRICO
and I agree with him, team ico is the reason I had to own a PS3.
...considering the PS3 launched in 2006, and Team Ico likely won't have a game ready before early 2010.
You can never be too ready.
There are only two movies that I would call a masterpiece and those are Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage by Guillermo Del Toro. He is one of the best in the movie industry today. Team Ico games are excellent. Definitely agree with Del Toro.
The promise of Team ICO games is what amde me buy a PS3. Don't underestimate it. I just assumed the PS3 wouldn't have such a rock period last fall. But it's all over now and I can get a huge selection of titles for my PS3.
Del Toro, and i was supposed to have a meeting with him along with my two friends to see about getting him to back one of our shows, but sadly the person setting up the meeting was a flake, so it hasn't happened yet. i'd love to see what Team Ico would have done with a setting like in Pans Labyrinth. hell, they probably would have done the Hellboy game justice too. i can't wait to see what they've been cooking up for the PS3 these past few years. can't wait for TGS!
These two games really deserved much more success than they had. I only hope that Team Ico's next game(s) do better sales wise. And if you have a PS2 (or a backwards compatible PS3) and you haven't experienced either of these games I'd recommend you find a copy. Used or not. I think everyone who hasn't should really give these games a chance. Many games are fun to play but I don't feel many are able to create the type of atmosphere and feeling that these games achieve. I really feel that both give you an experience like no other. Ico with its incredible air of mystery and isolation. Taking such a simple story that's admittedly been done countless times before (basically 'save the princess') and managing to create something truly refreshing and magical. There has never been ANY game to effect me the way that Ico has. It's hard to even explain in words... as cheesy as that may sound. Shadow of the Colossus then came out and delivered in a completely different way. Whereas Ico was based more around puzzle solving and contained essentially one 'boss fight', SOTC featured no puzzles and may be the only game to ever feature boss fights exclusively. There are no other enemies in the game (ok, ok, if you want to count the very end) besides the 16 Colossi you face. Most towering hundreds of feet above you. Sure, you may have faced large bosses in other games such as God of War... but the real difference here is how small you feel. You're not like some kind of god... merely a young man with a sword and bow. It feels like a real accomplishment and something extraordinary to scale and take down one of these behemoths. Accompanied by a fantastic score that only pushes the battle into an even more epic level. It's sad that some many other derivative games have gotten far more success than these games... but hopefully more will continue to discover and be moved by these gems. I simply cannot wait to see what this team has in store for us in the future. If their past work is anything to go by it'll be nothing short of gaming bliss.
I still remember the feeling of encountering the first colossus, climbing over the platforms not knowing what to expect. Then you hear the sound of the ground shaking and this huge colossus comes into view, the camera zooms back and there you are standing with only a sword and a bow and arrow. I've never felt so overpowered by an enemy in a game before. The game is truly unforgettable. It evoked so many emotions throughout.
Team Ico creates an emotionally evoking game for the PS3. Using the surroundings, atmosphere, situation, etc to make us feel certain emotions... all without the use of words or at least very little.
will go down in my book as one of the greatest games ever. few games can truly stand by themselves and stand apart and shine as much as SotC and ICO have. And what i mean when i say "by themselves" is that the MGS series is fantastic, but it is a SERIES. series are generally phenomenal (like MGS) but to have a game stand alone and be called a "masterpiece" is hard to come by. Team ICO is composed of geniuses. pure & simple.
And LOLOLOL at Nintendo games, like Ocarina of Time. You have no idea what a masterpiece is zerolinkgannon.
Care to explain? Ocarina of Time pretty much speaks for itself. But I have played and beat Shadow of the Colossus. Taking down the first boss was a experience I can never forget. Good game indeed
Nintendo makes games to make money. They make them as fun as possible. Team Ico expresses themselves through interaction. They're polar opposites. People may say OoT is a good/the best *game* game (I disagree), but to say it's anything close to the artistry of Team Ico is laughable. It's just a commercial product made for fun and money. It's a HORRIBLE insult to Team Ico and other artists to call Nintendo games art in any way or form.
everything is down to personal opinion, if someone thinks that Bikini Karate Babes is a masterpiece in gaming who are you (or anyone else for that matter) to say otherwise, its all down to personal preference.
I agree. The thing is... ...I would only trust Peter Jackson with those movies.
SOTC was a brilliant game. I know it’s hard to believe, but I think it could’ve been even greater if it were not held back by the PS2, or any last gen system for that matter. I’d cream myself if a sequel was made with the cell’s power.
I think technical limitations only help make games more creative. I think many games now look brilliant but are somewhat superficial. Many games just don't seem to have soul now and if SOTC would have been made this gen I could see it losing a bit of the essence of what it is. For the record I was playing SOTC earlier today on my PS3 ,and when you up convert it to with wide screen enabled it looks incredible. At times I forget it is a PS2 game.
I love Del Toros stuff, Devils Backbone being my favorite. I think the two games are great but disagree that there the only two classics and i think this has been taken out of context as i remeber listerning to one of his commentaries and he said the first two silent hill games were up there.
I love all his stuff too. I thought Hellboy 2 was freakin' AWESOME! I would say better than Iron Man. (Not the Dark Knight though...you just don't touch that one.)
He says masterpieces, not classics.
Zelda has garnered the attention of generations by its recurring themes, and this is much the same with most of Nintendo's flagship titles. This, coupled with millions of dollars in advertising, and you give a great game great coverage. That is really what must be done. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were both critically acclaimed, but not given their proper support from all fronts. Amazing games CAN sell, they simply need to be vouched for, given TV spots (commercials directed by Del Toro, perhaps?) and most of all, talked about. I'm happy people are talking about this game. That in itself is proof that the next Team ICO game will do much better (in sales) than the two previous titles.
If we're going for "classics"... Devil May Cry (all) Metal Gear Solid (all) Viewtiful Joe Okami Resident Evil 4 Kingdom Hearts I & II
How about Street Fighter... Mario has to be on the list(especially Mario64) Powerstone... Capcom vs Marvel R-type........ Secret of Mana.. Uncharted and MGS4 instant classic Great list...I had a Love HATE relationship with Viewtiful Joe otherwise a great game
People disagreed with those games? They were all amazing!
Of course I disagreed! If we're going for "classics"... Then your list should be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay longer. You made it seem like that's the whole list :/.
i think he forgot Ocarina of Time...
I've been there done that. they were great times. today I'm ready for more fresh games. btw, metal gear online is awesome! MGO is my game right now & I'm loving it! Ps3 everyday!
totally agree with him
I still haven't finished SoTC. I got stuck at a boss and a still haven't picked it up again, I'm too busy playing other games, lol. This game is pretty amazing though, from what I've played (about half the bosses).
those are the type of titles that you remember for a long time and salivate at just the thought of a sequel..... its also nice to know the studio is getting their respect for the work they've done...
Too Human will become a classic as we all know the masterpiece it is
Haha, I love you man keep up the good work.
FYI I agreed to both of you assuming you were using sarcasm :P
is the greatest gaming experience ive ever had, the story is so amazing and emotive yet hardly anything is said, the landscape, the music, the gameplay everything about it comes together to make such an emotional game, a breathtaking masterpiece. I really cant express just how amazing this game is, it is definitly a game to play before you die, I completed it so many times.....temple top garden ftw!!!
