Sony Computer Entertainment announces formation of smart device-focused ForwardWorks

Sony Computer Entertainment, which will change its name to Sony Interactive Entertainment on April 1, today announced the formation of ForwardWorks, a new company aimed to deploy new services towards the iOS and Android smart device market. The company will begin operation on April 1.

ForwardWorks is based in Tokyo, Japan, and will leverage the intellectual property of various PlayStation titles and its characters, as well as Sony’s knowledge and know-how of gaming development expertise, to provide gaming apps optimized for smart devices in Japan and Asia. Its aim is to “deliver users with opportunity to casually enjoy full-fledged game titles in the new filed of the smart device market.”

Maybe they should focus on their mobile console...Remember the Vita guys?

fdkenzo2948d ago

I hope that they anounce a new Vita, with more powerfull hardware...there are phones in this days that have much better graphics than Vita... Probably if the hardware will be more powerful will have much more suport from dev....i hope for a new Vita...

jaycptza2948d ago

not happening, it's not feasible

amiga-man2948d ago

I'm afraid mobiles have undermined the reasons for a dedicated handheld gaming device, gaming on the go is everywhere for those that want it and is why I can't see a follow up to the Vita.

Vita didnt fail, it is just less relevant in todays world.

"I hope that they anounce a new Vita, with more powerfull hardware...there are phones in this days that have much better graphics than Vita... Probably if the hardware will be more powerful will have much more suport from dev....i hope for a new Vita"

If anything, it would not be a traditional Portable playstation , it most likely will be a smartphone instead of a dedicated game console handheld. Though with a smartphone on the other hand designing a PlayStation smartphone developed as
(PlayStation phone) before xperia play was not a true PlayStation phone it was a PlayStation mobile certified device.

Making a true playstation phone I would say is also maybe on the cards due to Sony's mobile xperia brand is being geared as profit over market share, which is being drawn down on how many smartphone models that they are releasing.

Consolidated smartphone model to making a PlayStation phone to tie in with a living room console playstation Eco system.

Playstation Vita being supported via digital downloads for new games is the continued support cycle from Sony, which would be really no different than what Sony is doing with PSVita. Only this time no built in physical controls..just dual shock 4 support. That way what games controlled by console controller the very same games on your mobile playstation smartphone..they already have a smartphone dual shock clip.

Its just majority consumers want a smartphone that's thin and big screen and for physical controls that use a real console game pad would be the best solution..same game pad means universal control scheme as that of the console in the living room will be the same control system for the smartphone as well.

nix2948d ago

i've read that only around 1 percent of people who actually buy stuffs in games like Candy Crush.

http://www.engadget.com/201...

imagine the money devs can make if they get 2% market. i just hope sony isn't making one of those freemium games with DLCs.

DeadlyFire2948d ago

Only way is to merge it with mobile to guarantee profit in US market. If rumours are true Nintendo is doing this with thier next portable. A new Psp could work with the right direction. Vita did well in Japan. Going all mobile is not what i would expect from Sony.

Vita 2 news wont be certain until at least E3 2017.

Commando_Bro2948d ago

A PlayStation Phone OS.
Design for high end graphics gaming with the advantages of a fully fledged phone.
Maybe it runs Android as well.

UltraNova2948d ago

I cant see a new PSP/Vita coming nor a sudden increase in Vita support. These days the market(aka money) leans heavily on mobile so it is only natural they want to focus on iOS and Android and exploit their IP property and PS brand name.

Do I like it? No. Do I need to buy those games? Certainly not!

I don't mind them catering to the mobile market, as long as they don't take resources away from Playstation to support this direction.

nunley332948d ago

It's sad when the best to expect from this venture is maybe a few of the new mobile games from the new studio somehow make it to Vita.

_-EDMIX-_2947d ago

"I don't mind them catering to the mobile market, as long as they don't take resources away from Playstation to support this direction" Well isn't that why they are forming this team and not just making their other studios work on this?

I don't see Vita support either as if it didn't perform, its best not to keep wasting money on it. 3rd party is supporting Vita pretty well right now considering. With World Of Final Fantasy, Project Setsuna etc.

rainslacker2948d ago

Spot on with that comment.

Normally I'd say that Sony shouldn't ignore a good market like mobile, but in this case, it is rather disappointing that they would do something like that with the last year especially being rather disappointing on the support side. If it weren't for 3rd party niche support, I'd be even more disappointed in the Vita.

nveenio2948d ago

Yeah, I remember the Vita. It's right next to me, and someone uses it every day. I also get a free game for it every month.

I noticed that they didn't mention anything about Forwardworks focusing on Vita.

Ausbo2948d ago (Edited 2948d ago )

exactly. Everyone is talking about Vita here, but they specifically mention smartphones.

The other thing it says is to users in Asia and Japan. Doesn't mention other territories.

tmisellati2948d ago

what does that mean for us , the gamers ????

TheLyonKing2948d ago

if you are interested in mobile games then you as a gamer get more choices of games if you are like me and have no interest in mobile then nothing will have changed.

DragoonsScaleLegends2948d ago

If you are interested in microtransactions...

There fixed it for you.

HarryMasonHerpderp2948d ago

Closes evolution studios and forms a mobile company. Lame move Sony.

TheLyonKing2948d ago

not really a lame move, more a necessary move. I hope evolution thrive without sony and others get to play their games but the industry is tough and right now mobile is making tons of money especially in asia so less lame and more very business savvy.

DragonKnight2948d ago

Necessary in what way? If, and it's a big if, the resources going to Evolution are now going to ForwardWorks, then it was not necessary, it was planned.

TheLyonKing2948d ago

@DragonKnight Necessary for them to expand their mobile foot print and in turn make more profit which in turn means they can fund more games.

And Necessary and Planned are not oxymoron to each other, you can have a necessary closure that has been planned.

HarryMasonHerpderp2948d ago (Edited 2948d ago )

I'm just a bit down about evolution studios, they were a great team and UK development teams seem to be a dying breed. Now we have this piece of news ...just depressing.

_-EDMIX-_2947d ago

"they were a great team"

Did they make money?

This really boils down to that. Were they profitable for Sony to continue keeping them afloat? Maybe when they are independent and have to deal with funding, they can take the time they want in creating what they want, but clearly Sony didn't feel they could afford to spend money on delays only to ultimately sell half of what Motorstorm sold on one of their fastest selling consoles.

It sucks, but this is business. Leave emotions at the door. Leaving that team on board only took away money and funding from teams that were on time and moving units and staying on budget.

Why should the company as a whole allow that when other teams are meeting their dates and performing as expected?

Sure DC did great after updates ,no doubt...did that translate into more sales?

So why hurt everyone under Sony Computer Entertainment for 1 team's blunder? I think they knew what was up when they decided to work for a publisher.

Again, it sucks, but it happens, its business.

_-EDMIX-_2947d ago

Not really. The exist to make money. If the studio didn't make them money ,they are correct to close it. If they can seek a good return on mobile they are right to seek it and invest.

Sorry but nothing is "lame" about that as their goal is to make money, not lose it.

Please do not put Destiny’s monetization into Sony’s first party games. The monetization is what’s driving players away from Destiny.

PlayStation officially losing it.. fans will never support gaas games

just_looken15d ago

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6415d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long15d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197215d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12515d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91315d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer15d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91314d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit14d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

Christopher15d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6914d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit14d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher15d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken15d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197214d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2315d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218315d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder15d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Sony May Soon Let You Decide How Much NPCs Talk In Games

Sony has patented to add multiple dialogue modes to let players switch between how many conversations with NPCs they want in the game.

Motion and control input traversing over higher and lower frequencies seperate from each other allowing the controller to do both
