Rise of the Tomb Raider – DX11 vs. DX12 @ AMD R9 390X Benchmark & Performance Comparison

With update 1.0.638.8 Rise of the Tomb Raider not only offers VXAO for Nvidia Maxwell users, but also DirectX 12 support. We offer a benchmark performance and graphics comparison of Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC with DirectX 11 vs. DirectX 12 – PC is set to maximum graphics settings – we disabled some setting for better picture quality, such as motion Blur, Film Grain and Vignette Blur. We used a MSI AMD Radeon R9 390X Gaming 8G. Rest of the specs as well as benchmark results can be found at the end of the video.

I have 2 gtx 980ti running on sli, i7-6700k at 4.6GHz with 64GB DDR4 RAM and when i run the benchmark of this game on 1080p i get 60fps, vsync is off. Is that normal? I run all the heavier games at 100fps average.

In the Open areas this game has a lot of issues that people complained about on release, people expected dx12 to fix the issues but it hasn't. Overall it's pretty poorly optimized in my opinion as people with monster rigs reported having frame rate issues in Soviet installation and geo thermal valley. I struggled with my 970 i5 3570k as the big areas just destroyed my CPU and still do sadly so I never went back.
