Remedy on DX12: Matching DX11 Performance Not Trivial on All Architectures; "You're the Driver Now"

Remedy Entertainment's GDC session warns developers about DirectX 12 after their experience with Quantum Break: it won't be easy at all to surpass DirectX 11 performance.

My early impressions on using DX12 with RotTR are lukewarm. It doesn't seem to be running much better, and the new AO is only available in DX11...

Alexious2956d ago

Indeed, though Nixxes promised future improvements.

LP-Eleven2956d ago (Edited 2956d ago )

In fairness, the game wasn't built with DX12 in mind. I don't think Gears Ultimate was, either.

The first, true, DX12 release is Quantum Break. With some much riding on it, that could spell disaster, right? Well, I don't think so. In fact, I'm expecting to be thoroughly blown away by it!

TheCommentator2955d ago

There are two important factors regarding DX12:

•No hardware is fully compliant yet(except XB1, which was shown to be at GDC Europe last year), since Nvidia only supports FL12.1 while AMD only supports FL12.0.
•Devs just got their hands on the tech and their programming profficiency is not that great yet.

This means there will be some hiccups as the tech needed to run DX12 matures and as programmers learn how to better speak the language of DX12 in general.

@ Commentator: Well said.

Seems like it was a somewhat of a bait for quickly getting win10 onto as many PCs as possible. For now it looks like only one's benefiting using it over dx11 are people with AMD CPUs and high end GPU's. And that is a big minority of users.

Damnit guys, you could have warned Crystal Dynamics BEFORE they wasted all that time on Tomb Raider's Dx12 patch :p

kaiserfranz2956d ago

That was so disappointing, I get actually worse performance in DX12...I guess it's just another of Microsoft's lies

LP-Eleven2956d ago

As I noted above, I wouldn't call it a "MS lie". I don't believe we can reasonably judge DX12 based on it being patched into games. The real test will come when there's no DX11 option at all.

FrostXVenom2956d ago

Lie?i would like to hear some names with directx 12 you have played...
Well it was not disappointing for me as i am getting noticeable performance boost in ROTR using dx12..

Alexious2955d ago

@LP-Eleven: GoW Ultimate has no DX11 option at all and it's the worst of them...

FITgamer2955d ago

To be fair MS haven't been the ones hyping DX12. It's been 3rd party devs and fanboys.

LP-Eleven2955d ago (Edited 2955d ago )

@ Alexious: Rumor has it that people picked through that game's files and found, mostly, DX11 stuff. Meaning, it was, most likely, rushed out to beat HITMAN. It has none of the proposed advantages that DX12 is supposed to bring though. Not one.
