Could NX be just a portable

Apparently there are some new rumors about Nintendo's next-gen console codenamed 'NX.' It seems that the rumor of the NX being a portable device has gotten a lot stronger. Reports have the device coming with an HDMI dongle that would allow for gamers to output gameplay to a TV. The portable also includes 'haptic feedback' in the analog sticks. It has Bluetooth-syncing technology to where you can receive text messages and phone calls on screen without having to close the app or game. Once again, in terms of "power" it had been likened to being on the level of an XBOX One, or possibly 50% stronger than Wii U or 2x as strong as PSVita. In any event, it would be the most powerful handheld Nintendo has ever released.

I hope the NX isn't a portable. I personally feel the 3DS has so much more to give. I think a new home console would be the way to go, but with a heavy emphasis on connectivity to unify all of the Nintendo tech.

RosweeSon2974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

Yeah I'll second that ;)

ABizzel12974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

3DS didn't really have more to give, and 2016 was probably it's last good year on the market sales wise. Sales have pretty much peaked in JP, and NA / EU just aren't as interested in traditional handheld as much as they were 5 - 10 years ago. Plus the tech was severely outdated at this point, and the game line-up was drying up last year.

It was a great little handheld, but it's life cycle was coming to it's natural end.

I think it could have at least done well in 2016 with price drops across the board around the release of Pokemon Sun / Moon, and carried over nicely into 2017, but as soon as the NX was announced to be revealed in 2016 it ruined both 3DS and Wii U sales.

Personally I'm fine with NX being a tablet / hybrid, because handheld is where the majority of Nintendo's fans game, and unfortunately the 3DS lost millions of gamers to smartphones and tablets, so Nintendo needs to make that up, and win back their audience, and a gaming tablet that acts as a gaming handheld, but also streams to a TV like a console is pretty much all I want from Nintendo.

The NVIDIA shield tablet is the best example of what the NX could be, and if you look up what that tablet does, and just imagine a more powerful (if the rumors are true), with Nintendo's full support, and improved streaming, then you would see just how big this can be for Nintendo.

The one thins I will say is if they are planning on making a NX portable and a NX console, then it's stupid IMO to release the portable before the console. The handhelds have always outsold their consoles, and the 3DS completely ate up Wii U sales as well, by launching first, being $100 - $200 less, and being a quality enough device to be able to get ports / spinoffs of some Wii U games which provided it an overall better library.

You can't have the NX hybrid and console launch with the same shared library, and expect the console to do well if the hybrid launches first, cost less, and has the same games to play.

Darkwatchman2974d ago

I don't think the 3DS has "so much more" to give. It's been out for 5 years. That is a typical generation. Sure, a little more levity can be had for handhelds because they don't need to be the most cutting edge all the time, but even so, I think we're approaching a new handheld and whether that turns out to be the NX or something else remains to be seen.

I'll give the 3DS another 1-2 years considering the New 3DS model only just came out last year and still only really has one exclusive game not counting the recently announced SNES games.

I don't want a new handheld right away, but I do want to see it relatively soon. The 3DS already became super outdated hardware wise the second the PS Vita launched just a year after the 3DS. Kind of a wii u to ps4/Xbox one problem. I want the next handheld nintendo makes to be a noticeable leap in power over the vita and have a screen resolution that isn't abysmally low for what should be decent hardware. The fact that Nintendo never bothered to improve the resolution of either the 3DS XL or EITHER NEW 3DS model kind of baffles me, honestly.

Antnee5342974d ago

Guys think though if this is there next portable then we can get better pokemon and fire emblem games!!!

RosweeSon2974d ago

But it won't be tho sure better handheld better games but after announcing all those new games for 3DS only yesterday and with New Pokemon already confirmed for original 3DS, can't see when everyone wants a new and more powerful Home console that they will replace an already well established system (3DS) that is still continuing to sell much better than their home console for another handheld. Home console is next and new handheld if there is a dual element to new home system but yeah otherwise new handheld won't be this year 2017 earliest. 3DS isn't getting dropped any time soon.

Summons752974d ago

The DS had games coming out for a while after the 3DS was out with Black and White 2 coming out a year after the 3DS was released. This isn't anything new with Nintendo since more than likely the NX will have backwards compatibility with 3DS games if it is a handheld. The 3DS came out in 2011, it's been 5 years which is a typical life cycle. The 3DS has been pretty much maxed out and we won't see games get much better than ORAS and FE fates and devs are opting to leave out 3D for the sake of better performance to push the system as far as it can go. As much as I love my 3DS it's time for a new handheld. This is a good year for the 3DS to have a last hurrah but it's no secret the 3DS sales have been consistently dropping for the past few years. They had to release a slightly upgraded 3DS to give a little boost to performance and that model, as wonderful as it is, didn't take.

Honestly I'm in the NX will be a primary handheld but with a way to connect to the TV for home entertainment speculation camp.

wonderfulmonkeyman2974d ago

Nope, it's not. I'm 99% sure of that.
IIRC, when they announced that they were making the NX, they said something to the effect of it being the next step in their console line.
Why would they call it a console if it's ONLY a hand-held?
It wouldn't make sense.

RosweeSon2974d ago

Why would they announce a new Pokemon if they are ditching the console before it's due out but yeah I agree it's a home console.

Summons752974d ago

You do realize Black and White 2 came out for the DS a year after the 3DS' release right? What Gamefreak chooses to do has nothing to do with Nintendo's plans. Also Fire Red and Leaf Green released the same year as the DS.

RosweeSon2974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

Summons won't let me reply to you for some reason but no I clearly didn't haha my bad I bought 3ds day one but forget it's been 4 years or more already time flies, I should have known as well as I was playing both black and white (white I think) then black 2 was just getting back into the series after platinum but still I don't see it myself DS had sold a lot more by that point and was clearly not gonna sell too many more a new handheld was needed I've had mine day one and I wouldn't have said it needs a new one desperately but I know I'm behind one some big games due to backlog and saving some of the best til last but yeah think 3ds is good for another year or so 12-18 months get this NX whatever it is out and then worry about a new handheld if it's not already able to detach from the home console either way Nintendo always keep us guessing sure things get leaked but they always change the game.

Still think 3ds has legs tho they only started SNES games yesterday and there's a massive of amazing games. GBA would be ideal being as its handheld. New Pokemon, beat the rhythm is it? Never played originals so grabbing that hopefully I can't see why they wouldn't/couldn't do a Mario Kart 9 before leaving number 10 for the NeXt home console. Surely they could also get N64 games on 3DS, DS had Mario 64 how many years ago.

BenRage32974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

@Wonderfulmonkeyman

"Why would they call it a console if it's ONLY a hand-held?
It wouldn't make sense." But if the system is both hand-held and console, then it would make sense.

If Nintendo is ditching the traditional console/handheld formula for a merging of the two concepts, then Nintendo would not be lying by calling it a console.

And let's not pretend that Nintendo always let's us know exactly what they are planning. They emphatically denied making a new version of the 3DS not two months before they announced the 3DS XL.

Of course until the NX is officially unveiled, this is all conjecture.

wonderfulmonkeyman2973d ago

To be fair, the 3DS XL wasn't so much a new version as it was a size upgrade.
The difference is subtle, but it's a very important distinction between mere variant and flat-out upgrade.

As to the NX, if it's a mix between console and hand-held, then there's going to be two distinct units; one for the home and one for on the go.
There's no way they're going to be making a hand-held that functions as a normal console at the same time, that can be BC with Wii U or play disks, because that would be waaaaay too bulky and battery-intensive to carry around with you.
They also can't rely solely on cartridges like how the 3DS does for it, either, because that's not what third parties would want to use to put their games on the system.

And there is absolutely NO WAY IN HELL that they'll be the first to go fully digital by cutting out disks and cartridges.
We all saw how "well" Microsoft was received for attempting that; not even Nintendo's stupid enough to try that so soon after the idea was shot down.

That's why I say that there's no way it's a console that fully combines the two.
I'm firmly convinced that if there is any sort of portable aspect to it, it'll be a separate unit.
Hopefully optional, so that the same whiners that couldn't step out of the past [and their comfort zones] and embrace the Wii U's controller won't have a chance to crucify the NX.

deafdani2973d ago

A handheld is a console, too. Just in portable form. :P

KimikoGaming2974d ago

Why would we get a new handheld generation this year when we just got the NEW 3DS last year which is supposed to offer even more powerful games and visuals than the previous 3DS?

Focus on new games for the NEW 3DS before making another handheld generation. It only has 2 games so far.

BrandanT2974d ago

It could probably render more but I don't think it's more visually impressive because the New 3DS still has the 240p resolution.

Darkwatchman2974d ago

The new 3DS just has a better CPU. No other hardware specs improved. Hardly capable of rendering much better visuals.

superchiller2974d ago

@ Kimiko - Because the "New 3DS" (terrible name) is nothing more than a cheap trick, to try to get loyal Nintendo fans to re-buy the same handheld they already have. 3DS hardware sales were tanking, and Nintendo wanted a way to boost sales, so they released the "New 3DS" hoping fans would re-buy it. Huge scam, and a poor way to treat their customers.

Ninja_G_Aidan2974d ago

You are right.
I see the New 3DS as a tester console to find out new ideas for future consoles. The second analogue stick sucks on the New 3DS and was one big tester idea.

Philface2973d ago

@Schiller: No one is telling you to buy this. That's all in your mind.

BenRage32974d ago (Edited 2974d ago )

"Why would we get a new handheld generation this year when we just got the NEW 3DS last year which is supposed to offer even more powerful games and visuals than the previous 3DS?"

The answer to that is 3DS sales are beginning to decline. For the year 2016 (quote from article, link below), "The company is predicting a 34% drop in operating income and a 51% drop in net profits for the year as well."

Some, not all, of Nintendo fans live in this bubble of denial that Nintendo's financials are just wonderful, because the 3DS somehow sustains the company. I love Nintendo, but the 3DS is going to have trouble reaching 100 million in lifetime sales. So far 5 years= 58 million units sold. That is good, but it's not nearly the numbers of the DS. The 3DS will be lucky to hit GBA numbers of around 80 million. People forget that the 3DS wan't even selling until Nintendo dropped the price and they took a huge financial hit when the did that. It hasn't always been a steady stream of profit from the handheld division this time around, and we're not even talking about their home console business.

Nintendo is in decline right now, and while I do not think it is time to panic yet--it does make sense for Nintendo to reinvigorate their video game business by releasing some new hardware. A hybrid HD console/handheld makes a lot of sense to me. I'd totally buy one.

wonderfulmonkeyman2973d ago

I'm thinking the same thing you are, but for a different reason; the NX home console will be a home console period, but with a controller that will allow some degree of portability, if rumors are true.

But that won't mean it will aim to replace the 3DS, because the 3DS and NX will have separate software.

I doubt we'll be able to play something like Smash Bros 3DS on our NX controller, for instance, and therein lies the distinction between the NX being a home console or a portable; the fact that each one will, most likely, have software designed specifically for it.
You'll be playing NX games on the go, but you won't be playing 3DS games on the go unless you've got an actual 3DS.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple10112d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref11d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde11d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander197211d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville11d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff218310d ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos10d ago

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref11d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan11d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis00710d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander197211d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref11d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde11d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander197211d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander197211d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier11d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto11d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff218310d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts11d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts10d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic10d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
