like it is completely possible for the Ps3 to catch up and beat the xbox360's install base.

However, Microsoft can just come out with the xbox720 and leave all the xbox 360 owners in the dust again and claim victory.

Mao3686d ago

If Microsoft came out with the 720, I'm curious to see where gamers would stand with that decision. Console lives can't JUST be four years. It's too quick and the cost of a full console assembly demands some type of sturdy foundation to hold for a greater period of time.

The current state of the economy should also suggest NOT to release a new console too quickly, but we'll see what MS decides to do. I don't think it would be a good idea, but that's just me personally.

King Me3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

Microsoft are having a very hard time outselling the Ps3.'Cause it's not like the 360 is only cheaper in the US,it's literally much cheaper than the Ps3 everywhere else.

chaosatom3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

Microsoft will just fall flat on their face.

marinelife93686d ago

Anyone know what the cumulative NPD numbers are for the year between MS and Sony?

Silellak3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

There is no way that will happen. They're planning to drastically revamp the 360's interface this Fall. You don't do that with a console you're planning to mothball.

Software sales alone ensure the 360 will be around another 3 or 4 years at a minimum. The PS3 will eventually outsell the 360 due to worldwide sales, but I think the 360 will hold off the PS3 in North America for another 2 or 3 years, if not for this entire generation.

Cajun Chicken3686d ago

xbox720 would totally piss me off.
Yeah I swore, but if this is to happen AGAIN I see some damn revolution, because the 360's install base is obviously bigger than the Xbox's ever was and it seems like I'm one of the majority to see Microsoft's true colours because of my support for the original only to be dumped on and render my Xbox useless; except nostalgia.
Also Microsoft will continue their insistence of forcing people to upgrade systems/OS's and killing support before they have had a full life and taken to full potential and told to 'move along' to the next thing.
I got an 360 just to game on whilst the PS3 built up its confidence, with all these ports and the nearly everyone moving onto multiplatform Sony keep things alive, even if on life support for a few years for those unable to upgrade/migrate and have much, much more established IP. I aim to just forget about my 360 when PS3 takes over.
Microsoft do it again early this gen, direct insult to those who have 360's.
Since the canning of the Xbox and ridiculous charges on Live, despit online gaming being free previously, I don't have trust or respect the way MS do business AT ALL.

chanto233686d ago

people would still buy xbox 3 if it comes out as soon as next year...people are shopaholics. I know i would buy it cause i'm like that when it comes to gaming. i predict 720 will come out at fall 2010 with Gears of War 3 as a launch title...

firelogic3686d ago

What does revamping the interface have anything to do with bringing out a new console? Is it against the law for them to use their brand spanking new layout in their next platform?

Silellak3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

No, it just doesn't make logic sense for them to spend the R&D on a brand new interface for a console they're just going to get rid of. May as well save the money and just develop it for the 720 of it's coming out "in a year or two", right?

Can you name a single console that used the same interface as the console before it, not counting the 16-bit systems that didn't have ANY?

There's really no indication MS is getting ready to phase out the 360. I'm not sure where people are getting that from. Software sales are still very strong, and it has a dominant lead in NA that's being eroded away by the PS3 at a very, very slow rate. Even when that rate increases - and it will - it will take a long time for the PS3 to overtake the 360.

LastDance3686d ago

1.6 - arent the install bases for the xbox and the xbox360 around the same?

Willio3686d ago

"No, it just doesn't make logic sense for them to spend the R&D on a brand new interface for a console they're just going to get rid of."

The only research MS found was watching Wii/Sony's interface to develop their pirated version.

marionz3685d ago

MS have doen a far better job shifting the 360 then they did with the origonal xbox so thats really the main thing, as for the origonal having such a short life well thats down to the fact they came into the console game so long after the ps2 came out, its a shame the origonal xbox wasnt supported longer but the 360 wouldnt be where it is now if they hadnt stopped supporting the xbox.

i dont care if the ps3 catches up or passes the 360, at the end of the day 360 has a great install base so the games will come, its MS and sonys fight, and we are getting a ps3 soon so ill finally get to play great games whatever console they are on.

AAACE53685d ago

Good lord people.. MS released it's first console in the Xbox 1. They took a chance by allowing all consoles to have a HDD installed in each one reguardless of price, while Nintendo and Sony were content with us having to buy memory cards. The Xbox was a big risk, and a costly one. And to be truthful, the majority of it's owners were ready for the next thing. I lost interest in all three consoles around the same time and sold them in prep. for the 360.

So yeah MS did abandon some of it's userbase, but the xbox 1 wasn't selling anymore. I guess nintendo abandoned it's gamecube owners as well huh? And when they stop production on the ps2 sony will be abandoning its fans too? If sony figures they are losing to much money on Ps3 and cancel it in 2010 to launch the Ps4(highly unlikely), will they be abandoning their fans?

People just let it go! It was their first time in the games industry. If they do it again... then we have something to get pissed about!

wallace10003685d ago (Edited 3685d ago )

I am amazed that you are able to pass judgment on a product that has not been released, do you use a crystal ball? Your statement is the same as if i was to say "All future games for the PS3 are going to be aweful", a statement that is truly moronic and uneducated.

You can spin them, but you can't deny the reality;Ps3 is slowly but surely becoming THE hi definition console to own.

If Sony strikes a deal with Warner to have a Dark Knight Ps3 bundle, then it's safe to say Kaz Hirai and Jack Tretton will be having a jolly good Christmas.

Mao3686d ago

Throw in beta-subscriptions to DC Universe with that bundle and DEAR LORD!!! THAT would be something potentially insane.

barom3686d ago

Maybe even include MK vs DC with that bundle (I know a bunch of ya don't dig it, but it's startin to look good).

Damn when I think about it, DC Comics is rising too.

Silellak3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

Or you could, you know, own both?

And then enjoy the exclusives for both consoles?

Thus putting gaming and FUN before console-based loyalty to a soulless corporation?

Just throwing that out there as an idea.

Is there anyone left who remembers when gaming was about what games are fun and not about sales figures and Metacritic scores and all this horsecrap?

I mean yeah, fanboyism and console loyalty have been around since the Nintendo/Sega years, but I never remember it being as bad as it is now. Maybe the internet is just highlighting the issue by allowing the "opposing sides" to interact so easily.

King Me3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

But I do own both, and fully intend on enjoying Little Big Planet,Resistance 2,Motorstorm,and Gears of War 2 :)

The fact is:Not everyone can afford both consoles and maintain both at the same time.Going by the recent sales+game releases,it's becoming increasingly obvious that the Ps3 is the console people are choosing.

Cajun Chicken3686d ago

This is different. Sony DOES have a soul, I can't forgive the fact after a few years in the market, my xbox was rendered useless except from playing OLD games.
MS got me on their side with BC for a bit on 360. Then they dumped it before some of the most unique titles on XBOX were supported.
TWO direct insults to ME the consumer.
Yes, I still own my 360, but I refuse to give MS my money as much as possible.

Whos better in retrospect? the company that supported a past-gen console the same time as a next gen TWICE (Sony)
Or the one that dumped on millions of fans of a console that life was cut short to focus on one console and a funded by the public online service? (Microsoft)
Innovation is ONE thing, Insults are ANOTHER.

Besides, only a small trickle of MS ip's and exclusives appeal to me, give me the original XBOX anytime.

GamerMan3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

>>>"Is there anyone left who remembers when gaming was about what games are fun and not about sales figures and Metacritic scores and all this horsecrap? "

I was there, If you had a system it was cool and you enjoyed the games that were on it, because again it was cool. If your friend had the other system you would go over to play games on that system or trade systems (at least I would).

>>>"Or you could, you know, own both?
And then enjoy the exclusives for both consoles?
Thus putting gaming and FUN before console-based loyalty to a soulless corporation?"

Owning both would be nice but then the games I might miss from owning both consoles would mean having to spread my money thin. This is my main hobby, then movies, then audio. I "prefer" to focus on the one console I pick for that generation for my gaming habits.

Although near the end of a console life I will go purchase the other console if it's dirt cheap and catch up on the games I felt I really missed. I did not do this last gen because the market has really changed and the price of consoles is a whole lot different. I end up owning all the systems until I got to this generation.

Things will never be like the good ole days and I accept that and try to talk about things that matter to me which are games. If it is comparing systems I will with a rational person but I already respect other people have different gaming habits than me. Mine are unique and niche but I come from the old skool gaming days. I have cut my gaming down to 40+ hours a week versus the 60-80 hours I used to spend on top of a normal 40-50 hour job week.

... Anyways long post .. apologies to those that like it short and sweet.

kinggeoff3686d ago

"sony DOES have a soul"

listen son, cocaine is a hell of a drug. If you truly think this way, you have some SERIOUS life lessons headed your way. Games are games.

Silellak3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

I think it's funny how much stock people are putting into a 20k difference.

It doesn't tell me people are choosing the PS3 as their "HD console". It tells me people are choosing one or the other about evenly. I don't even find sales differences interesting until they approach the 50k mark.

How long will it take the PS3 to have a higher install base than the 360 in North America at this rate? Even if the PS3 outsells the 360 by 100k a month, that's somewhere around *60 months* to overcome the 360's install base in NA.

3686d ago
King Me3686d ago

When the sales data so far shows the Ps3 maintaining over a 200k lead this year so far,and this is only in NA.Once you add in the EU and JP numbers, things get a whole lot more interesting.

Catching up to the 360 is now looking more of an inevitability rather than an impossibility:Sony are outselling their direct competitor in every territory whilst being at a higher price point.Obviously, the better software lineup Sony has,the more chances of grabbing more gamers to their box...And they have quite an impressive lineup of games coming up for the remainder of the year and for 2009.

A Price cut will surely help the console even more,no denying this;the Ps3 is not mass market price yet.The naked truth for Microsoft is,their console IS at a mass market price, you can walk into any electronic store and pay $275 and walk out with a 360.So for them to still struggle to outsell the Ps3 whilst being at a cheaper price point, well,it's truly showing of what the future lies ahead for the Xbox 360 in terms of sales.

Silellak3686d ago

"yeah I remember those days PERFECTLY, wanna know what RUINED gaming they way it used to be?? MS and their fanboys."

What a load of crap. Seriously. I can't even believe I'm wasting a post in response to this.

Things would've been like this in the SNES vs. Genesis era, if the internet had been around. Nintendo and Sega fanboys would've LOVED to parade around monthly sales numbers, if that sort of data had been widely available. It wasn't.

I suppose you'd prefer a magical happy world full of rainbows and unicorn and sunshine where the video game industry is dominated by a Sony monopoly? Give me a damn break. Competition is ALWAYS good, even if it's from someone like Microsoft.

I'm not a big MS fan, but I really like my 360. Just like I'm not a big Sony fan, but I really like my PSP. Funny how that works. It's almost like I care more about the games than who makes the system the run on, or something.

wallace10003685d ago

You can't say stuff like that, it isn't about being a fan of video games in general, it is all about being a fan of a company. Being a loyal fanboy is paramount, gaming is a distant second. One must rise to the defense of ones brand, and worry about gaming once one's day of defending the mother company is done.

MS better keep supporting the 360 if they decide to come out with a new console. because i aint dishing out money for a new shotty xbox, and it would happen too if they rush it out like they did the 360.

juuken3686d ago

I hope they do too, but I can't see that happening, especially when HD-DVD lost the format war.

kinggeoff3686d ago

HDDVD have to do with anything?

if they wanted to they could adopt a blu ray player. HDDVD failing has had nothing to do with MS. They never really were HDDVD advocates

I could see if it was their main media format. But it's not

juuken3686d ago

"Only a minority of developers are running out of space on the 360. How will Microsoft accomodate them? I imagine multiple discs combined with a mandatory install."

Yes, we only hear a few developers say that but what about a certain developer working on that game Rage? I'm pretty sure his words weren't full of bullcrap when he mentioned that games will look worse on the 360 if they end up being compressed.

"I hate the idea of mandatory installs on console games, but it's definately better than releasing a new console in a year or two."

I hated mandatory installs at first but I realized that overall they're better than getting up every five seconds to change a disk. While the game's installing, I can read the manual, head downstairs for a cup of water, or check my mail until it's done.

"As 4.3 said, and I said earlier in the thread, Microsoft is not revamping their entire console interface just to toss it away in 2 years."

Perhaps not, but once again they did the same thing with the original XBox. What will happen in late 2009? 2010? Microsoft better have the resources to keep the 360 running and start focusing on 1st party titles because if they're going to just focus on 3rd party titles, then they have a tough battle ahead of them.

"And also I said earlier in the thread, there was a 20k difference between the 360 and the PS3 and people are acting like this is some huge victory for Sony. Even if the PS3 outsold the 360 by 100k a month, it would take them somewhere around *60 months* to overcome the 360. That's *5 years*"

It wasn't a huge victory but the PS3 managed to outsell the 360 *yet* again, despite the 360 pricecut. That's what amazes people, not the fact that it was by a huge margin.

And seriously, what? It would take the PS3 five years to overtake the 360? Wow...the PS3 reached the the 14 million mark faster than Microsoft.

I wouldn't underestimate Sony if I were you.

Silellak3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

I think you responded to the wrong thread, but I'll go ahead and respond here.

It would take that long for the PS3 to overtake the 360 in North America, if the PS3 outsold the 360 at a rate of 100k a month. 200k a month would still take them 30 months, or 2.5 years. I'm not talking about worldwide sales - worldwide, there's no question the PS3 will overtake the 360 very, very soon.

Right now, all Microsoft can really do is hope to hold off Sony in NA. That's my point.

For the record, the third party strategy isn't necesasrily a bad one. I was staring at a PS3 MGS4 bundle at Best Buy a couple weeks ago, and nearly grabbed it, except that I realized at least 90% of the games I'd want for it are also on the 360. At $500, it wasn't worth it for me to own a PS3 as well as a 360.

If I were buying a next gen system RIGHT NOW, assuming I didn't already own one, I'm not sure which it would be, to be honest. The Blu-ray aspect of the PS3 would be tempting, as would the free-online, but the cheaper cost of the 360 combined with the fact most of my friends (online and off) have 360's and not PS3's would lean me toward the 360. So personally, it would be a toss-up for me. Already owning a 360, there is just little reason to grab a PS3 for me at this point.

Microsoft could certainly use MORE exclusives - no one is arguing otherwise - but the mere fact that so many formerly-PS-only series have become multi-platform is a huge boost for them.

Sevir043686d ago

"And also I said earlier in the thread, there was a 20k difference between the 360 and the PS3 and people are acting like this is some huge victory for Sony. Even if the PS3 outsold the 360 by 100k a month, it would take them somewhere around *60 months* to overcome the 360. That's *5 years"

This is the mentalilty that everyone needs to get away from, They are still believing that the North amarican market is the WORLD MARKET AND REFLECTS WHAT THE WHOLE WORLD IS DOING. Wrong!!!

peopel wake up and smell the coffee, NA is just a percentage of the world as any other market is... the world market is ALL inclusive, NOT North America.

the PS3 is Now outselling the 360 in NA,
the ps3 has been Out selling the 360 in EU/UK/AU
The PS3 has destroyed the 360 in Asia and Japan

that is the world

just as with the Wii.

the PS3 is out selling the 360 on average world wide last year by 250K
which is why in 2007 MS only Sold 7.5 million 360 while sony Hit 9 million.

the sun shone through all the bad media and doom and gloom press and naysayer fankids when Sony announced it's sales from 2006 launch to the end of it's fical year 07 when they announced 12 million sold.

The momentum is there The PS3 is what everyone is going after now. whats worse is that the 360 had a clearance price cut that had no effect on the consumers choice because they still chose the more expenive quality machine over the cheaper hardware.

Sony is on the rise. MS is well starting to run out of gas.

It's not who starts first but who finished the race first. it's a marathon Not a sprint, MS still hasn't grasped that

let them talk about their E3 and G-phoria 08 gears 2 and halo 3 awards, Sony will talk about their momentum and how many more new gamers are pickling their black box over MS's box.

Ms isnt going to launch the 720 and leave its xbox 360 owners behind. You guys act like this is just a contest on who sells the most consoles. Its not its a business and its about making money. The xbox 360 is profitable for MS and they are going to ride this one out even when the new console launches in 2012 or so. Im sure sony will come out with their new system around the same time.

juuken3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

...They did it with the original XBox.

" The PS4 isn't coming out for another 4 or 5 years at a minimum, so there's no reason for Microsoft to rush a new console out, either."

But Microsoft rushed the 360. What makes you think they won't come out with the 720? As games get bigger and developers need more space...I wonder how Microsoft will be able to accommodate them?

"They can sit pretty with their software sales for awhile. The 360 will own North America for some time to come."

...I wouldn't be so sure of that. The gaming industry works in very mysterious ways. Sony has been outselling the 360 on their home turf. What makes you think it won't happen again?

Silellak3686d ago

They rushed the 360 out so it could get a head-start on the PS3. Hence all the ridiculous, unacceptable hardware flaws.

The PS4 isn't coming out for another 4 or 5 years at a minimum, so there's no reason for Microsoft to rush a new console out, either.

They can sit pretty with their software sales for awhile. The 360 will own North America for some time to come.

spends millions in time and money overhauling the entire xbox interface, and hyping it up just to ditch the system?

not too likely
