Edge Feature: RPGs to Rule the World

Edge writes: "This is part three of our genre-oriented look at the games market in the near future. For our reasoning and methodology behind this series, please check out our first entry on shooters. Part two on action adventures is also available. Today we're looking at RPGs-an increasingly difficult category to find the borders for, as many, many sorts of games now integrate the genre's addictive stat-building and inventory mechanics. Much like shooters, it's probably most appropriate to take a "we know them when we see them" approach to defining the field.

Japanese RPGs

Long the bastion of consoles in the west, Japanese RPGs have not had a particularly strong showing this generation-look at any given system, and you'll be able to count the entire library on one hand. The genre is set to heat up in the next few months however, thanks primarily to a resurgence from market leader Square-Enix."

i used to like final fantasy when it was turn based and used the atb system

i dont know what it is. but its like final fantasy is meant to be turn based and it works like that .

Tomdc3628d ago

well its turn based again in FF 13 so smile =)

i love rpgs, i dont generally like turn based games tho and I make an exception for final fantasy games cos of thier sheer briliance! =P

final fantasy 4-10 is atb turn based

I know what you mean. I'm playing through FFIX atm (Disk 3), I wouldn't have the battle system any other way.

I did like FFXII's [battle system] once I got used to it though.

zo6_lover273628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

10 was only turn based, with no ATB, 10-2 used the ATB though. 12 also uses the ATB.

"well its turn based again in FF 13 so smile"

from where you got that info? last time i checked there's not even a single gameplay video around of FFXIII and S-E said that the battle system it's a little bit complicated but nobody has said something about being turn-based...

socomnick3628d ago

from what I read ff13 is real time on crack. Its basically ff12s battle system but more complicated. Also if you want rpgs with that classic ff feeling try mystwalkers rpgs. Lost odysseys felt like ffx.

I have yet to see an upcoming RPG game that looks to redefine the genre and be the next 'big' thing in the RPG space,as a matter of fact,I think the reason why FF13 wont see US and EU store shelves 'til late 2009/early 2010 is because Square know that the game isn't anything special right now.

I'm willing to bet that an RTS/MMO will be the next big thing in console gaming,as both these genres are still in an infancy state on consoles and the upcoming games are really promising,e.g EndWar,The Agency, etc
