Star Trek MMO 'Nothing Stopping' Cross-Platform Play?

Spong: Cryptic Studios is hoping to enable PC and console users to play Star Trek Online on the same servers.

In an FAQ published on the game's official site, the question "Will console and PC players be on the same servers?" is posed. The response goes as follows - "We would like that to be the case. There is nothing technologically keeping us from making it so."

There is nothing stopping cross platform play, this is true. But level playing fields on cross platform? Which cross platforms are you discussing? Because of the three, one of those doesn't support Keyboard and Mouse for gaming.

cross platform play between the PC and 360 or PS3 and 360 is possible but not for all 3 platforms.

So it would be safe to assume that it would be most likely exclusive to one console. We know they are releasing Champions online for the PC and 360 next spring and that would have cross platform play.So it would be safe to assume that a 360 version would be a given for Star Trek online.

Unless they make the game on all 3 platforms but make separate servers for 360 to PC and PS3 to PC.Is that possible?

I disagree on this one and the reason is STO is a MMO that will have heavy keyboard usage. It also made sense when the install base wasn't what it was last year on the PS3. But the speed at which the PS3 is gaining and will continue to gain and pass it only makes sense fore a MMO they would like to have around for a few years.

Add to that the fact 360 gamers are already paying and now will have an additional fee, well, do the math.

"but not for all 3 platforms." Why? Do you know something the developers dont?

Cross platform is possible regardless of format, it simply requires assistance from the corresponding manufacturers.

@ Morganfell: Go to the official Star Trek Online website and you will see that the game is coming out on PC/console http://www.crypticstudios.c...
Lay en faces on the word "console",so it ain't coming out on both the 360 and PS3 but only one.Cryptic studios have never developed for the PS3 but have have experience with the 360 with CHAMPIONS ONLINE and the canceled MARVEL UNIVERSE ONLINE.

I am not saying that it won't drop on the PS3, as for that i don't know. And as for keyboard and mouse support, to me that is not an issue, after all how many games on the PS3 support cross platform gaming between PC and PS3?

@FIshy Fingers:
Read that article and you would see that it is impossible to do cross platform play where both consoles are involved. That is why i said the only way it would be possible would be to implement cross-platform play between PC/PS3 on one server and PC/360 on another server but no PS3 to 360 interaction.

And the reasoning was because they cant get sony/MS to talk to each other, there for it is NOT technically impossible. Like my reply first stated...

"it simply requires assistance from the corresponding manufacturers." ie, Sony/MS.

with support from them both there is no reason why cross platform cant take place.

Agree on that. Its obviously possible but lets face it, it won't happen.Hence the link i showed.

morganfell3779d ago (Edited 3779d ago )

No you and a lot of people are reading that incorrectly. It is simple grammar, a class I did not dodge. Lets look at it, shall we?

Console is singular and plural as a noun. Number is based on context. Here it is different and the word console is employed as an adjective. In English, the adjective or adjectives, in this case the words console and the abbreviation PC, must agree with the noun in number. In this instance the noun is formats, a plural word. Hence they are discussing more than one console format.
