Non playable characters are not known for their intelligence. They have a habit of getting lost, walking into bullets and generally causing a nuisance. But they also make all of our gaming worlds more believable. However, they must also responsible for A LOT of weird behaviors, like routinely filling up chests and letting strangers enter their home and steal their belongings. Usually they’re easy enough to ignore, as gamers have grown used to them over time, and unless an NPC is perpetually blocking a doorway (oh my God, I want to punch you directly in your pixelated mouth), most of the odd things they do are unobtrusive.
