Video shows PS2 emulation for PS4 using Dark Cloud before being pulled

It’s possible Sony will officially detail its PS2 emulation for PlayStation 4 tomorrow during its PlayStation Experience keynote. Evidence of this comes from an accidental button push on YouTube showing Dark Cloud running on the console.

Looks like Dark Cloud 1 which I still have and works fine on my BC PS3.

Since there is a PS2 emulator for the PS4 then all you should need is a PS2 image which may be got via digital download and there will most likely be a charge for this which IMHO is reasonable. Of course some special deals may be worked out if you have PS+.

If the emulator can be made to read a PS2 disk and install the image like the PS4 does with PS4 games then there really should be not charge for this. Hopefully this is case as well. Having to pay to play games you already own would really get some people offside.

It must be noted that the PS2 emulator may not be able to fully play all PS2 games. This is the case for the PAL region original PS3's which used a mixture of PS2 hardware and emulation software although it could pretty much play all PS2 games although some may have glitches which prevented you from finishing the game.

I have over sixty PS2 games and only three games (Eternal Rings, Ratchet and Clank 2 and Star Ocean) that I can play for many hours before they get to a point where the game glitches and becomes unplayable. I do have another (Kings Field 4) game that has an issue abut 10 hours in, however you can circumvent the glitches and fully play the game. All my other other PS2 games can be played to completion.

Enjoy ps4 owners. Dark cloud, and dark cloud 2 are fantastic games. I don't know if they hold up. But I have great memories of them especially 2.

Dark Cloud 1 still looks great when played on my BC PS3 to my 55" HDTV. Obviously it won't look as good (think up-scaled DVD) as a PS3 or PS4 game but it is very much playable and still IMHO great fun.

Guess that confirms the no disc bc. Unless they do it but don't do the up scaling and trophy support for those titles and they provide beefed up versions to buy on the store. I'm guessing we have to buy again though.

At the end of the YouTube notification I just got a little while ago, it specifically says PS2 Classics and PS2 game discs are incompatible with the PS4 system at the end of the trailer. Sucks, but with 1080p and trophy support, I'm not really surprised that they aren't the original code untouched.

If it was the original code untouched this would have so so bad. If they were literally offering the exact same games but had to pay again for ps4 there would be riots in the comment sections. And rightly so really. I'd have liked disk based so I could make sure I'd have a working console to play my old games but there's only actually a few that I would. That would by psychonauts and disneys extreme skate adventure. Kingdom hearts and jak and daxter I already have ps3 versions of. It's not too big of a deal, it's only bc. I barely have time for new games never mind old ones so I know I won't even have the time to even notice it xD

Well, actually thats the whole point of emulation, to run the original code without tweaking it at all.

The only thing that differs here is the way they execute the code through emulation software so that PS4 SW and HW and understand whats going on.

The way they can achieve better framerates is overclocking the virtual PS2 machine so it can run the original code faster, but this only works if the games dont have any limiters/already run under their target speeds.

All the enhancements you see are thanks to the emulation software. The games should be identical to what you have on the original discs.

No, backwards compatibility is different to emulation. As an example the PS2 was backwards compatible with the PS1. The original PS3's were backwards compatible with the PS1 and PS2 although later models of PS3's only had PS1 backwards compatibility. Basically backwards compatibility normally means having hardware with possibly some software that allows the console to play a previous models gaming disks.

Emulation on the other hand is software which emulates a particular bit of hardware such as NES, SNES, Master System, Mega Drive, N64, Game Boy etc and now PS2 on a PS4

Remastering a game is totally different to using a emulator to play an image.

All Sony is doing is to effectively rip the PS2 disks to an image or virtual disk then use the emulator to play that image. Obviously Sony would have to be careful of not infringing copyright so they would need the particular game developers written permission to do this.

Somehow I don't think most game developers would object since they could get extra revenue from what would be now a defunct game.

There may be some copyright issues with allowing the PS4 to rip a PS2 game disk thus creating an image although it could be done. Of course it may be possible that Sony will allow you to download a PS2 image if you put your PS2 disk in the PS4. One can only hope.

For people like myself who have a PS2 collection there would be no way I would pay to play PS2 disks that I already own. If I don't own those disks and if I want to play the game I don't have any objection to paying for it at a reasonable price of course.
