just going by some of the things said on here, it must really hurt sony fanboys to see the 360 doing so well, and their beloved ps3 doing not even half of what the other playstations have done. considering the size of the install base and the size of the brand, the ps3 is a shadow of the ps1 & ps2.

what do you mean early? the xbox 360 would have 5-6 years into the generation... which is the average console lifecycle... only sony is doing the 10 year old crap... 2010-2011 is more than enough for a new xbox.... obviously this is not something Sony wants to hear because they need to make some money before thinking about another console.. but that's not the case with microsoft... I can't wait for microsoft to release a new xbox with probably 2-3 more power than the xbox 360... more cores... 2-4GB of ram... DirectX 11... and PS3 games look like poop compared to the Crysis looking games on the next xbox...

it's obvious that Sony is banking that once the next xbox or Nintendo console people will buy the PS3 for their games; hence them beating previous gen consoles.. just like their PS2 keep selling after we are half way into this gen... I personally don't care if the PS3 is selling better than the xbox 360 when the 720 is out... just like I don't care that the PS2 is still selling after the new xbox is out.

i was talking about how danboy said the PS3 is not doing half of what the previous ones did. It's too early in its lifecycle to say something like that. I mentioned nothing about any other system. But the PS3 is not your average console.

At first Micro and its fanboys were saying its all about the games. And it was, and still is all about the games for the 360. Sony is approaching with a different strategy. Why do you think they sold over 100 million with their first two consoles? Sony wants all markets of entertainment. Hence the multi-media capabilities of the Playstation brand. Hey, I want Micro to succeed just as much as you do, cuz its just more games out there to play. Its just that the Xbox brand will never be as big as the Playstation brand. It was proven with the first Xbox because it got dumped. But you'll probably find a way to spin this, and I can't wait. Entertain me.

Good luck for the 720 then (BS^^). At that time it will have to compete against a below <$200 BlueRay-enabled-HD PS3. Hopefully they'll add WiFi to the new console then, at least. And I hope it will be 100% backwards compatible. Otherwise they'll do it again and will split their own market for no reason.

and it looks like no console actually outsells the other (360 and ps3) for more than a couple of months.With the mini price cut and the jrpgs coming out in Japan for 360 , the 360 is starting to outsell the ps3 worldwide again thus pushing back the day the PS3 will "catch up"

The PS3 and 360 I think are going to tie this gen.But I still think its a bit too soon.Remeber early 2008 people were saying the 360 was dead...well...alot of consoles would love to die they way the 360 is dying right now.

Don't be fanboys. Nobody outsells anybody right now, it's the 'dead season' for video games. Let's talk about that at the end of the year. Sony has constantly outsold 360 worldwide in holiday seasons so Sony predictions should be accurate.

Nah, the PS3 will go on to sell 100 million, just like it's brothers did. But the 360 is a tricky beast, I'm not sure what it will do. And unless some changes are made with games, I just can't see the Wii passing the 70 million mark, if that. But hey, I'm nobody special, and these are just my opinions.

This is a fight between Microsoft and Sony for 2nd place. PS3 has the advantage IMO. Blu-ray and PS2 owners. PS2 support will die at some point and we will see more Blu-ray owners.

But it doesn't really matter to me who wins. I don't get richer if any of these guys win.

Problem for sony is that with the arcade at the bargain bin (be warned, you get what you pay for) prices, the ps2 users wont be upgrading to the ps3, they will probably pick up the arcade 360. If sony cuts ps2 support, they need to do it when the ps3 has hit a sweet price point, or ms will own them.

I still think Sony should bring a low price segment PS2+ (a PS2 with a HDD and HDMI and a bit brushed up specs (just double or triple the clock speed, but use a 1x compatibility mode), like play 720p, but also all PS2 games) and replace the PS3 with a (compatible) PS4 keeping a 2 product strategy. Would take the price pressure from the tech driven high end, and satisfy the entry level consumers. I do not think one product can do it all and if they won't do it, the low end will be replaced by either the 360 arcade or the Wii - unless they can sell the (slim-)PS3 in a range around $100-$200 which won't happen within the next two years...

EDIT: Actually, he says they will be tied in the hardware race which includes handhelds. I'm really curious how he expects the PSP to match DS sales and then make up 41 million units.

I still don't see the Wii as a competition. Well, they sell. And that's it. I have one. Its OK. But there as soon as you are finished with the third party's, its collecting dust. Yeah, I could buy a couple more games. Would keep me busy for a couple more weeks, I guess. But far from more then that. Its lacking a lot of features. Maybe features a lot of people don't need. I do, however. OTHO, i am curious if the market will stay that way, especially with the increase in HD saturation. I would guess, consumers sooner or later want an HD experience if they spend that much money on their TVs. And pretty soon realize, that the Wii is not helping here. I can understand why the DS sells that much. You need a new one every year (I think I have now bought 4 or five in the last 1 1/2 years). Don't think the Wii breaks that fast, though. No need to buy another one soon.

PS3, however, if I'd have the money, I'd buy 2 more (or three, one to play BD only, the other two to play some games at the house with the kids online).

BTW. In all fairness, I might get a 360, too. The Arcade, if $199 for the games I can't get on the PS3 (Live? Give me a break. Paying for my and my kids accounts - no way).

I predict the PS3 and the Wii will both sell over 100 million minimum. Although the Wii will still be ahead of the PS3, the Wii won't affect the PS3's sales. The 360 is the console that will affect PS3 sales.

Honestly, what gamer would buy ONLY a Wii to satisfy their gaming needs this whole current generation? No gamer would. But of course, non-gamers will only buy the Wii... unless they get addicted to gaming and move on to PS3/360.

One misconception about this article is the prediction that Wii and PS3 will get split shares of the same demographics. This is not true. The Wii will be catering mainly to non-gamers who would never think of buying a PS3 or 360. So obviously the Wii will sell over 100 million.

The PS3 will also sell over 100 million because the majority of PS2 users will upgrade to the PS3 once it hits the right price.

Its all a gamble with the 360. It depends on Microsoft's execution. Sony has to always think a few steps ahead in order to minimize the 360. If Sony slips up and gets too arrogant and think they can sit back, it will be their downfall.

But, I don't think Sony or Microsoft will be close in terms of sales this generation. The moment where mass migration from last generation to this generation will give a HUGE boost to one of the two consoles. From that point on, the mass-preferred console will constantly outsell the other one for the rest of this generation.

An example. PS2's right price drop at the right time + release of FFX = Dreamcast dead. Before that moment, it seemed like Dreamcast had a MUCH better chance of "winning" than the PS2 did. Who knows what will happen this generation. We've already witnessed many impossibles become possible. PSP outselling Wii and DS combined in Japan. FFXIII going multiplatform. Etc.

I suspect the critical moment of this generation will occur during late 2009 going on to 2010. Whoever pulls the knockout punch during that moment will win. The competitor might try to get back on their feet, but they will inevitably fall back down.

to say one way or the other. For instances a lot of people believed that the ps2 was the console for casual gamers......so I wonder how many of those gamers Nintendo might have stole. Then there is the question of how many ps3s were purchased because of bluray......so then one would wonder if bluray players drop significantly in price how much of an effect that will how of units being sold. Those are just a couple of variables that we have no clue about......so I am not sure how anybody could be so sure that it would be one way or the other. Regardless, I could care less.......we are talking about 3 years away......I will just sit back and enjoy my gaming until then..and even then I will not care much because I am already locked in to all three consoles.

As for the Software, no, sorry. Without a doubt, by any measure (Metacritic scores or sales) the Xbox 360 has a vastly superior library of games.

Wait until the New Xbox Experience (NXE) is released. Primetime, Avatars, Game Caching, Netflix -- all things the PSN isnt remotely close.

imo, part of the reason ps3 is losing to 360 is sony's horrible marketing. seriously the 40gb ps3 was priced at 400$ and the pro 360 at 350$. sony in no way told their consumers that for another 50$, you get a blu-ray player, wi-fi, and free online. its a good thing that they updated their hdd space once ms announced the 60gb pro though. that was a smart move.

I'm still trying to understand why you would buy and xbox360.

I played gears of war online the other night, on a 360. and i'm sorry was not impressed one bit. Graphics were ok, but some textures were bland(yes the 360 has some too) You fire off your weapon into someones chest, and while that's happening, the same person snipes you in the head, so getting hit with multiple bullets has no effect. Stupid Stupid Stupid.

Cod4 is on both consoles, and i've played on both.

The only halo that i ever liked was the first one.

Mass effect was a graphical,bugfest,loading textures. Awful.

Other then live(which isn't bad)

and the price.

I'm not sure why people want it.
