Performance Analysis: Star Wars: Battlefront

Digital Foundry:
BF4 was well known for its connectivity issues, but our experience with Battlefront on Xbox One in a live environment has been positive thus far. Outside of a brief empty period early on Sunday, we've been able to quickly find full games to play with no problem, and no signs of network instability in-game. Of course, only Xbox One owners subscribing to EA Access are able to play the game right now, which means a much lower overall player base - not exactly a full stress test then. We won't really know more about this aspect of the game until it officially launches in all territories, but netcode stability during the beta stress test was good - so fingers crossed that this will extend into the crucial release period.

"Aside from resolution, one of the clear sacrifices made to achieve this level of performance comes from its level of detail system. Battlefront aggressively culls objects and crumbs from view while level geometry is dynamically adjusted based on proximity - a situation that applies to both console versions of the game. It can appear distracting at times, particularly with a higher vantage point, but it's the kind of trade-off necessary in order to hit the target frame-rate. We saw many of these same limitations in the aforementioned Halo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 5 as well, it's just the reality of targeting such a stable level of performance.

In closing, we should stress that this is a preliminary analysis with more to follow, but we can confirm that performance and visual quality are looking highly impressive in the final code. We're impressed to see DICE continue to optimise and improve the game right up until launch, when there was already little to complain about in the beta. The only question remaining is how well the netcode and servers will hold up given the inevitably extreme pressure likely during the launch window.

Basically the PS4 version runs slightly better and looks better than the XB1 version due to its higher resolution.

However they both perform very well in terms of framerate which is a pretty good thing in my opinion. Its a shame that the game didn´t complement its visuals with a beefy amount of content.

Letthewookiewin971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

What you said is absolute fact. The disagrees are pathetic. The game looks and runs better on PS4, nothing new.

MasterCornholio971d ago

What i like the most about this is that Dice didnt aim for parity here. They did their best on each system and they both run great due to that.

Lamboomington971d ago (Edited 971d ago )

While you PS4 elitists keep trying to bring this up,
XBONE version will have advanced AI because of the extra runs on extended CPU paging operations based on the advanced architecture.

The biggest part you are missing is the balance. XBONE version Walker Assault is simply more balanced, because of advanced simulation processing. It has better gameplay overall. As we all know, gameplay>graphics.

The weapons have better recoil on XBONE because of ESRAM.

Don't even get me started on the PC version

Based on simple logical analysis, PS4 is the least impressive version. Far below all the others.

@ Lam-whatever.
I just.. I don't even... Aaron? Is that you?

Edit: OT: Who didn't expect the results of DF's analysis?

@Lamboo
Lol.. Nice joke post I got a good chuckle out of that one. You should also add in cloud and secret sauce will power dynamic deformation of the deathstar! Lol

@Lam

Is that suppose to be a joke?

So the AA on the 900p PS4 version looks good from what they described.. Glad it looks good but im not buying it until i see some more added to the game outside of paying extra.. EA sure loves to hold content back and make you pay.. Its a damn shame they have a deal for 3 Star Wars games exclusively.. I would like to see another AAA dev make one this gen..

This is one of the best looking games I have seen on any platform. Its just a real treat that everyone gets a stable framerate. Frostbite is most impressive.

Play2Win971d ago

What you said is correct.

esmittystud101971d ago

Frostbite is most impressive......just not on Xbox One. Frostbite has been sh*t for Xbox One. They can't produce anything over 720p. Guess what resolution Battlefield 3 ran on my Xbox 360? 720p.

Frostbite needs praise for making nice looking games, but they also need some flack for hitting the wall on Xbox One.

Septic971d ago

BF4 did look crap on the X1. This however looks pretty good, albeit in 720p

the_dark_one971d ago

I believe dragon age Inquisition run at 900p on xbox one with frostbite 3, dont qoute me on this because im not 100% sure

esmittystud101971d ago

It was. How come Frostbite can't do it with this series on X1? Too much movement on screen at once maybe? I don't know.

Neonridr971d ago

technically it wasn't 720p on the 360 as the resolution was 1280x704 (so a few lines less than 720p)

However if you think the 360 version was using the same effects, lighting and aliasing that this game is bringing to the table then you sir are living in la-la land.

esmittystud101971d ago

I know that bud, and I'm not trying to start a console war, but when you own both consoles, and your trying to pull/root for a series on a particular console (X1, 720p), but there competitor produces something better (PS4, 900p), I'm probably going to buy the better quality product. Especailly when your playing on a 55" LED. 1080p/900p always outranks 720p and it ain't even close. Maybe on a small monitor/tv it doesn't matter. But on 55" LED, there is a noticable difference.

I'm trying to root for X1 and purchase a multi platform game for them, but it is very, very, hard. Rise of The Tomb Raider is the only game I bought for them in 2015. I did get Tomb Raider: Definative Edition free with Games with Gold one month. LOL.

Neonridr971d ago

@esmittystud101 - good stuff.

Qrphe971d ago

Inquisition was a 30fps game while the DICE games run at 60fps. There is the discrepancy.
