Microsoft Aims to “Make the Best Games on Any Platform;”Japan Plays “Critical Role” in Xbox’s Future

While Microsoft skipped Tokyo Game Show this year, today the house of Xbox held its own press conference at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel in Tokyo.

One of the most interesting parts of the briefing was a "mission statement" speech by Microsoft Game Studios Corporate Vice President Kudo Tsunoda, who outlined the strategy of the company worldwide, with a special focus on Japan.

Personally this will all come down to preference as to who makes the best games on what platform, but Microsoft will have a lot of convincing to do in Japan! And going by count they've already struck out twice.

"Japan Plays “Critical Role” in Xbox’s Future"

Yet they consistently allow big Japanese games to skip the Xbox One and didn't even show up at the Tokyo Game Show this year.

stuna11146d ago

I don't know but it seems like Microsoft and Xbox are trying to push their preferential eastern taste onto a market that already has a western preferred taste! And that could be clue number 1 at to why they keep failing!?

"Yet they consistently allow big Japanese games to skip the Xbox One"

Or maybe the developers don't want to waste time making a game for a platform that's next to obsolete in Japan. I understand the growing want for JRPG's, even in U.S. and Europe, but that's not why most people buy an Xbox. They buy them for big, AAA, shoot-em up games. Personally, I'm a fan of those types of games so I go with the Xbox because I like where they are heading with the platform. Most of those people who are in to games such as JRPG's and exotic/foreign games, they go with PlayStation specifically for that reason and that is understandable.

I think if they want to bring in more Japanese sales, they are gonna have to shell out lots of money for a third party game or get some studios specifically for those types of games.

MS always sound like they are trying to convince you they are doing things instead of just doing it,

XBLSkull1146d ago

Ever since Halo: CE they have had the best games. I still remember playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein in the early days of Xbox Live... boy that was a fun game... I hope the Wolfenstein sequel adds multiplayer just like RtCW, we need a good WWII game again.

He says greatest games lineup ever this holiday

Then proceeds to mention no Japanese games in said lineup

At a Japanese press conference...

They just don't get it... lol

MasterCornholio1147d ago

That's marketing for you.

It is quite ironic though.

thisismyaccount1147d ago

... tbh. they never have. 15 years in the buisness, all games but Forza have been acquired from other developers. Now they claim they´re gonna offer the best games on any platform <<AND>> Nippon´s gonna play a crucial role in it.

I don´t get it. This is either too funny to believe or just sad. I don´t know ...

Does a lineup have to have Japanese games to be great?

Last time I checked... Up until this year, the Japanese games have been light on next gen platforms.

So, now, this holiday Sony is shipping a few Japanese games (Notably though, Persona 5 got delayed to next year) so really the only Japanese game anyone is truly interested in is Disgaea.

Now and all of a sudden the conversation in every N4G thread about "the xbox's greatest game lineup" turns into "but there are no Japanese games" or "Sony's lineup is more diverse". I don't know how a game lineup gets more diverse than Microsoft's publishing for X1 this holiday. Rare Replay itself is diverse, Gears a third person shooter, Halo a FPS, Tomb Raider an action-adventure game, and Fable Legends an online, action RPG. There is no diversity issues there.

Rare Replay, Gears Ultimate, Forza Motorsports 6, Halo 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Fable Legends. None of these games seem to lack quality and of those I doubt any will be below 80 on Metacritic.

Please name the last time that any publisher shipped 5 consecutive games in 4 months that all rated 80 or higher on Metacritic. And name the game list.

You're completely missing the point...

If you're hosting a Japanese event. Don't say you have the greatest gaming lineup ever, and then only mention western game. Sends the wrong message

Spotie1146d ago

Your downplay game is strong.

Last I checked, there have been varying claims of games being light on this generation, in general; why single out the Japanese titles?

Disgaea, Dragon Quest, Samurai Warriors... or are you going to say those others don't count and expect to be taken seriously when you're actively downplaying Japanese games? I'm pretty certain there are even more titles I'm leaving out, but they don't count, right?

How do you make arguments based on assumptions that certain things will be? That last little paragraph of yours is so silly it doesn't even make sense how you could have constructed it.

@DanielGearSolid
So, when you go to Japan and say you have your best lineup ever it has to have a Japanese game?

That's just dumb... gor games to be part of the greatest lineup ever they do not have to be Japanese.

@Spotie
I mentioned Disgaea. Samurai Warrior games have a following, but the Metacritic rating for them has NEVER got to 80 (76 is the best ever) and sales are usually a few hundred thousand not millions... Dragons Quest will probably rate in the 80's and sell well. So, Disgaea and Dragons Quest vs. Rare Replay, Gears Ultimate, Forza Motorsports 6, Halo 5, Fable Legends, and Rise of Tomb Raider. Doesn't look like the PS4 lineup is strong or diverse in comparison.

I'm not trying to downplay Japanese games. I want Disgaea and Dragons Quest on X1. But, it won't happen. Just like Forza Motorsports, Gears Ultimate, Rare Replay, Halo 5, and Fable Legends won't come to PS4.

Well what else are they supposed to say?

"We got crushed... PSP's are selling more than X1's"

I hope they actually (X1) score some solid JRPG exclusives because if all consoles were getting them then I bet that'd make them better in the long run. I mean, even Wii U has Xenoblade X coming which looks amazing.

Fable Legends was stated as releasing globally this Holiday in his speech... That in itself is important to me. I wonder exactly when though.

I just hope Xbox looks into some JRPGs again although Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon (and others) didn't sell too well really they were solid games.
