Should Xbox One owners upgrade to the recently-announced Xbox Elite? According to Xbox head Phil Spencer, it depends on what they want out of their console.
"It will be faster, but I don't know it would be fast enough to say that you'd want to go off and spend hundreds of dollars to do that." I like how upfront and honest that Phil is about this. Any other exec would had hyped up how much of an improvement that SSHD drive is over the regular HDD. I have a 1TB hybrid drive in my PS4 and honestly I wish I had upgraded to a 2TB drive instead of shaving off a few seconds.
it would be very interesting to see if he would have made an xbox 360 without a hard drive. that did have implications, this system will not.
This whole conversations arises out of the consequences of making the Xbox One's internal hard drive closed off to most. If you could swap out the hard drive, why would you need to spend $500 when you could just purchase an SSD?
@Eonjay "This whole conversations arises out of the consequences of making the Xbox One's internal hard drive closed off to most. If you could swap out the hard drive, why would you need to spend $500 when you could just purchase an SSD?" instead of wasting the 500gb hard drive by removing it you could also add an external and still see some gains in speeds that way too. ideally of course would be the option to do both.
IMO if u have an XB1 you don't need to upgrade to the new console, but if you don't than the new version with a SSD is the way to go. That being said, needs and wants are different things and if you can afford to buy it and want it, then go for it. I may have to pick this one up next year for Scalebound and Quantum Break.
Its Not an SSD it a hubrind , Hybrid drives give very little improvements on most things over regular HDD's
@2pacalypsenow "Its Not an SSD it a hubrind , Hybrid drives give very little improvements on most things over regular HDD's" not true. the most frequently used files will have ssd speeds. this is why microsoft makes the claim it can speed up your games and apps by 20% and the operating system will have speeds of a ssd drive.
True it is not a SSD. False SSHD does give a decent amount of improvements over HHD. I have a SSHD in my PS4. I shaved off about 20 seconds load time of most games over the standard HDD.
Its probably a hybrid 7200 rpm mechanical and SSD drive so the OS is stored on the SSD while the games load off the mechanical drive. Considering the normal Xbox one comes with a 5400 rpm mechanical drive that would explain only 20% added performance on games and apps.
Everyone can buy a hibrid disk or better yet a SSD, put it in a external case and use it on the Xbox One.
first he should make non-xbox owners upgrade to xbox and then talk about elite.
Upgrade to xbox? You mean downgrade? Just kidding
Since PS4 and X1 have an SATA II chipset, SSD and SSHD bandwiths are limited to 3 Gbit/s. So you don't gain speed to its full potential. If you are looking for speed on X1 use an SSD and connect it through USB since USB 3.0 has 5 Gbit/s which uses the SSD to its potential.
They will still gain in 4k reads which is anything but being saturated, even on old Sata 2. Sequential reads will get bottlenecked as you alluded to..but that only affects large files like movies or game installs. The rest are little files that will still benefit from speedy seek times.
The Halo 5 Xbox One Console bundle is a better value for the same price.
It would still be better if they were to let people swap the internal hdd for whatever they wanted instead of forcing them to buy a new machine to get more space (and a bit more speed). I know about the external hdd option, however, the last thing I want in my livingroom is more wires, flashing lights and noise sources!
Wrong, USB 3 is faster then the internal Sata 2 connection. USB 3 is plag and play, it uses 10 times less steps to set up. USB 3 is more conveniente, more cheap since then have a ton of promos. Plus you can use the external HDD on any Xbox One, meaning you second console or you friends console, when you go over and use the digital games and profile to play with out downloading everything again. So Overall External HHD is >>>>>>> then Interanl only.

I plan on getting the Elite bundle even though I have a Day One Edition Xbox One, PS4 as well as a Wii U and gaming laptop. What can I say, I love gaming, my wife games, and even my 4 year old daughter games. I was going to get the Elite Wireless controller anyways so getting the bundle makes more sense. http://techu4ria.com/xbox-o...
Same here... the controler alone is worth $150 and you can still sell your XB1 regular console (out here in Puerto Rico) for a good $250 - $300 so theres nost of the total cost... just hold on to the kinect wich is not included in this bundle.
Agreed. As tempting as these things are (especially custom consoles like the Halo 5 console), you've just gotta resist and stick with what you have and really evaluate how much spending hundreds of dollars on a console you already own will affect your experience. Of course, if you're in a position to more than comfortably go for these things, they're great to have. I'd love to have the halo 5 console and the Hybrid drive and everything, they just look great and in the Xbox elite, perform a bit better, it's just nice to see Phil acknowledging that it's not always worth the extra money if you currently own a console Seriously though, for new customers, the Xbox elite bundle is crazy good value and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone thinking of an Xbox one. The customizable controller and 1TB bundled for that price is enviable. Glad they're still full on supporting Xbox atm with all these options in spite of the dwindling market share. Specifically because it reassures fans like me that we'll continue to get all this goodness for the rest of the gen hopefully. Keep it up I say.
My thoughts exactly, that halo 5 console is extremely tempting but I must resist. The elite controller too, I want them bad but that money can go towards games. If I could upgrade to halo 5 console for $50 I would in a hurry. Phil keeps it real and in touch with the community that's what makes him cool.
Just get the new one and sell your old one... not @ Gamestop... sell it online
I already own an Xbox One and I am still getting the Halo 5 console.
I am super jealous you can't even comprehend how much I want that console. I'm just mad for Halo and they did a great job on that design.
I might just have to work more overtime to get one haha. I've always been one of the biggest Halo fans but due to money I missed out on the Halo 3, Reach and Halo 4 consoles. I want this one to be the one. Halo 5 is going to be special.
I find the naming a bit sad, what about the upcoming 2tb model? They'll call it the godly xbox one? Marketing people have no shame!
Well the controller is for elite players, and they updated the drive in the console and the storage to make that 'elite' as well. Makes more sense to me than the 360 elites which were just a bit better than normal 360s.
Absolutely will not buy this. Already have perfectly good controllers. The hardcore folks are going to kill me in shooters either way.
^^So much this! Will take more than a super controller to help me win, lol.
hehe, true. I still want that controller though, just for the feel of the thumbsticks and how cool it stays. Sweaty controllers are the worst lol.
Skill beats a fancy controller any day. A skilled player on a fancy controller though can be unbeatable...except against other skilled players on a fancy controller.:) A good controller can remove some frustration though for those who don't spend countless hours with muscle training by playing over and over again. From what I hear, it's a pretty good controller. Won't make you an expert gamer though.:)
Of course not and it is just another option, just the the standalone elite controller, Using your own external HDD, snap, steaming games to your Windows 10 PC with a free upgrade, able to choose either the remaster higher resolution remasted titles like Bioshock or Gears Ultimate or playing with your own X360 games via BC, giving Halo fans the option to choose either the Digital DL version or exchange it for a disc copy of the $250 Halo 5 CE...those are all options and it is good to have options and not be limited. Again, Phil really does relate to us gamers and another well said comment that makes logical sense from him.
Remaster or higher resolution remaster ?? What's this, have I missed something ?
Thanks for saying this, Phil.
Its just a common sense...doh
And I have 9 dislikes LOL
It would be great if both Sony and Microsoft had a trade in program. Like if how Sony released a new model ps4 you could have the option to upgrade to that one by giving in your old system and paying maybe $50.
Why would they want to do that? They don't really make money off the hardware, it's the software and services that Sony and Microsoft actually make money on. It would be a logistical problem for both companies to deal with if they were accepting old consoles. What would they then do with them? Sell them as used or refurbished machines?
MS did it for 360->X1. Not sure what they did with the trade ins. Either refurbished them and sold them off, or just liquidated them to a wholesaler.
Oh man! Phil is getting in gamers heads to get them all to really buy an xbox elite by using reverse psychology. I dont know what kind of underhanded sneaky message hes trying to get over on us, but I for one will not be a part of it. What a slimey way to get ps4-only players and owners of the original xbox one to upgrade and buy more xbox ones so they can catch the flawless ps4's sales. Smh I wont be fooled by MS's dirty tactics!
It's hard to tell, you are joking right?
Think you will find that he's serious as he see's a conspiracy with whatever Phil Spencer says, i think he has watched X-files too much
I find it pointless to add a "/s" :p. Go full sarcasm
I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't joking. People are absolutely desperate to pile on on him. We've seen people the last few days desperately throw words like 'absolutely disgusting behaviour' etc in reference to pretty minor things.
You are 100% correct! Phil's message came from nowhere. Is not like the Elite version is having a lot of pre-orders and he's trying to stop the ones that would want to upgrade. The Elite version is not in top 100 best sales in any of the stores. So, it is no concern from the first place. Phil's statement was clearly released just to bring in discyssion the Elite version and thus to increase the pre-order numbers. Who thinks he's kidding... And separately, I would like to point out that any X1 console can become an Elite console by SIMPLY hooking up an external SSHD (and it will be a lot cheaper). Not to mention that you can hook up better (SSD) or larger ones (6gb). Nonetheless, the consumer is smart and already figured out the above and the fact that that the Elite version has no place on the market.
I made that sarcastic statement for people like you :)
Honestly don't see a point. I have a 6TB external. What's the point of having a hybrid 1TB when you'll be forced to get an external soon after that anyway?
Microsoft should offer a trade in program where you can upgrade your PS4 to an Xbox One.
Sony should do that but in reverse! People would flock!
Please view this ad: ps4 trade for Xbox one , http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sony... Download the application from the Google Play Store. http://goo.gl/Hs9Yg
When I go into GameStop I see a lot of people doing that or 360 to ps4, I like having both and have Since last gen.
Like a flock of sheep...
I really wish they would stop putting Mitch in front of the camera. The guy makes the worst assumptions, and really sounds like he doesn't have a clue. Hard to believe that he works for a video game news outlet, and yet never seems to know anything.
How about one with a better GPU?
not everyone cares bout specs you know, the xbox one does not have to be the most powerful console to be successful, as long as the games are good thats all that matters. hasn't history taught you anything? higher specs does not make a better games console. just look at the Wii last gen and we all know how that ended.
Are you saying the Wii was the best console last gen?
Wii ended as flop that was hyped for no reason.
jznrpg it was one of the best along side the ps3 and 360 and offered equally as good games (most 1st party ones at least) just because one console aint as powerful as the other does not mean it cant give you a great gaming experience, look at history for example. the n64 had faster hardware than the ps1 but ps1 was alot more popular because of the variety of games it had to the n64, the xbox and game cube they both were significantly more powerful than the ps2 but again ps2 was way more popular than both put together due to its library of games and exclusives. point im trying to make is power does not equal a better gaming system, games do. as long as all systems have good games i could care less whats inside the box.
The Wii was crap last gen. When I play games, I want great graphics AND a great game. A GPU that is significantly more powerful than what we have in the Xbox One would make a huge difference in both graphics fidelity (1080p vs 720/900), frame rate and graphics options. I am sure the old NES and SNES games are still a lot of fun too. I do not want to play them though, ever again.
Great option for new owners that want Halo5. Not interesting for existing owners unless they need a second one for a 2nd screen.
I donr need to , but am going cause that controller looks awesome
Personally, i don't like pressing R3 and L3. Pressing those buttons while tilting those analog doesn't feel right either. As a result, i tend to walk in (competitive) games that using L3 to run. So that elite controller is a great fit for me, though the price is pretty high.
I'm gonna give the controller a shot. I've always wanted to try trigger locks and paddles in certain games but I never felt like giving $200 to one of those aftermarket groups.
"If you're really happy [with your Xbox One console] you should go try [Xbox Elite] lol what? twisting words so he can twist your mind.
I would like to think xbox one owners who already have a console would not have to upgrade, that would be a slap in the face. The console was already overpriced as it was. Is this Microsoft big plan to shift more consoles? Hope the hardcore fan base will buy two because they don't have the rrod top boost there numbers this gen.
I just got the forza Xbox one, I don't understand why it doesn't have the hybrid drive, or why Microsoft refuses to let you swap internal drives while Sony encourages it.
I just got the Forza bundle too - really like it. I'd rather put the money difference between that and the elite toward more games rather than getting the elite.
