Xbox Boss Expects PS4 Price Drop In US

Speaking with IGN in an interview for next week's episode of Podcast Unlocked, Xbox head Phil Spencer spoke about the recent price cut on the PlayStation 4 in Japan, expressing his confidence in the likelihood of it soon happening in the west.

"I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price. When I think about the playbook they've used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we'll see a price drop from them coming."

The story is too old to be commented.
fermcr1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

I expect a price drop for both the X1 and PS4, this holiday.

Eonjay1102d ago

As a consumer, of course I want to see them both go down. We can 'pick sides' as long as we remember to look out for each others best interests first.

Anyway, I don't really know what Phil means by 'Playbook they've used in the past'. Do you mean the PS3 price drop in 2009 because the only play I can think of was a Japaneses price drop at TGS.

What do you think he is referring to or is it just a PR haze.

Abash1102d ago

"If history tells, then we'll see a price drop from them coming."

Man was that a terrible thing to say with how many times the Xbox One's price has dropped in less than two years.

If history tells, the Xbox One will be receiving yet another price cut more than anything

GribbleGrunger1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

This is disgraceful behaviour from the head of the XB1 division. First he tries to plant into people's heads that the only reason Sony get exclusives is because they pay and it has nothing to do with market share, and now he's trying to create a lull in sales of the PS4 by planting the idea of a price cut into people's heads. These are snake in the grass tactics.

Sony may well drop the price but they certainly wouldn't want to write it in stone just at the moment. Well done Phil, you've just shown your true colours once again.

Rookie_Monster1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

@Abash,

MS only had dropped the xb1 price once from $400 to $350. The $500 Sku include the Kinect so it is not a price drop.

@GribbleGrunger,
Phil was asked a question by IGN based on the recent announced price drop of the PS4 in Japan and he was just replying to them on what he thinks is going to happen for the PS4 inthe States based on his personal assessment of the Japanese price drop. I dont see any backhanded comment from him at all. Phil was just being Phil and telling what he really thinks.

At the end of that interview, he said "It's great for gamers when price competition happens. We saw that last holiday, and we saw crazy sales numbers on all of the consoles,". So he kind of gave the competiton some compliments it seems as well.

UltraNova1102d ago

@rookie

"I dont see any backhanded comment from him at all. "

I'll be frank with you, no one who's been around here for a while expected you to see anything negative coming from MS to beging with...

That said I dont beleive there was anything that malignant on what Phil said but he could refrain from talking about what the competition will or wont do in the future.

nix1102d ago

I also forsee MS coming out with "Buy a game and get Xbox1 free" to counter the PS4 price drop. They tried TV, why not a game this time? Perhaps in the foreseeable future, you might just get Xbox1 for just being in the mall long enough.

Crazy times are ahead, people. Crazy times are ahead.

Septic1102d ago

"When I think about the playbook they've used in the past,"

This could mean anything such as Sony's propensity to drop the price at a certain time after launch, at a particular moment to gain traction or when they're gaining momentum or anything.

You guys are here pretending to be experts and taking it literally.

"First he tries to plant into people's heads that the only reason Sony get exclusives is because they pay and it has nothing to do with market share,"

This is disgraceful behaviour?? Are people trying to desperately construct a platform to hate Spencer now lol?

This guy is privy to the kind of information that will let him know about this. Who are you to say that money isn't involved??

Are people that blinkered that they can't understand that Sony money hats too? Of course it is money.

"Well done Phil, you've just shown your true colours once again."

Wow....

InTheLab1102d ago

PR speak is right. Sony usually bundles games instead of price drops. There's no need for a price drop when youre selling the way they are.

That's really MS' playbook. Drop the price of the hardware and bundle to pad out the numbers for a temporary boost in sales.

Also, Sony usually creates Slim models which launch cheaper. Different than a price drop. They don't eat margin if they don't have to, unlike MS where it's do or die every holiday....

freshslicepizza1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

@GribbleGrunger
"This is disgraceful behaviour from the head of the XB1 division."

why, because he was asked a question and reflected on japan getting a price cut and how history has shown sony usually drops the price after 2 years on market? the only thing of disgrace is how you feel it is in everyone's best interest to somehow pick sides and stay there.

"First he tries to plant into people's heads that the only reason Sony get exclusives is because they pay and it has nothing to do with market share, and now he's trying to create a lull in sales of the PS4 by planting the idea of a price cut into people's heads. These are snake in the grass tactics."

show me where he said those exact words. you are taking things totally out of context to further enhance this feud between xbox and playstation camps that you seem to enhoy so much. why would he say such contradictory things when microsoft also pays for exclusive deals. you guys are a riot thinking one company is all about it's consumers while the other isn't.

"Sony may well drop the price but they certainly wouldn't want to write it in stone just at the moment. Well done Phil, you've just shown your true colours once again."

you've shown your colors more than he has, by a country mile.

@InTheLab,
"Also, Sony usually creates Slim models which launch cheaper. Different than a price drop. They don't eat margin if they don't have to, unlike MS where it's do or die every holiday..."

sony dropped the price faster than anyone last generation and they did it a few times, not just when the slim model debut. the 40gb model is when they cut ps2 playback and the price. the slim model came after. so please learn your history before pointing fingers.

Phil Spencer master of the obvious, plainly clear the time for a PS4 price cut is now, especially after the Asia wide price cut.

the Uncharted collection PS4 bundle for the official price of $399 is another indicator.

Sony stated months back they expect the PS4 install base to hit about 38 million in 2016, only way for that to happen is by cutting price to bring over the hold-outs.

miyamoto1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

All PlayStation consoles PS1 PS2 PS3 had price cuts by their 2nd year.

And PS4 is going for the casual market this holiday season. And it started with Until Dawn in the west. Next year it will be Dragon Quest Builders in Japan.

Which means Microsoft already has a plan in place to at least match that projected price drop.

iceman061102d ago

That's kinda what I read into it, too. Interesting.

UltraNova1102d ago

If you call waiting to drop your price once the competion does then I'd say thats not planning my friend, thats called reacting and reacting is what MS does the last 2 years. The only real planning i saw coming from MS was BC.

As for Sony they dont need to wait on MS, they simply follow the same path since the start of this gen.

bryank751102d ago

Unfortunately for Microsoft even if they drop the price, they are still not matching anything. Playstation is out on its own. In front and staying there...just the distance getting greater.

3-4-51101d ago

@Ultranova - Planning and putting the plan into action are two different things.

* I can plan out shooting a basketball, but if I don't actually do it, it can't go in the net.

* What I'm saying is, they are anticipating a price drop, so they already have a plan in place to meet that.

They want to be prepared so if Sony dropped the price tomorrow, they could match that the next day or a week later.

* If they don't have to drop it first, they won't as they'd rather make the extra $50 per console sale, as would Sony.

* Do you honestly think they just decide to do something and then just do it the next day ?

When something happens today, it was planned and talked about like 5-6 months ago at least.

Smart guy expecting something that has already been confirmed for Japan and expected to come to the US. Much genius.

There is no history. It's been three years with no price cut. Now it's time. It's just expected at this point.

lxeasy1102d ago

I don't expect another one from Xbox this holiday. Maybe on on Black Friday only. Xbox has a rich line up these next two months so i believe they are relying on that. As for PS4 I have no idea if they will price drop or not. They have a healthy lead. I only see them price dropping for us here in the states if they feel threatened

badz1491102d ago

no offense to the Nintendo fans but apparently everybody is thinking that the Wii U is already out of the race for sales leader this gen. with NX's news already in the air, the Wii U is as good as dead. again...no offense.

This is a sneaky underhanded thing for Spencer to imply. His real motive is to plant the seed in gamers minds that now is not the best time to purchase a PS4, but that they should hold off and wait further down the line for a possible price cut, that may or may not happen. He attempts the subterfuge by trying to make it sound like we are all winners in the end with lower prices.

His remarks are purely to stagnate the sales of his competitor and that's his job.

loopygames1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

Or maybe to plant the seed in Sony's mind to not drop the price and play into his hand... The 2 big Xbox One (Elite & Halo 5) bundles this holiday are at $500. Just a temporary $50 holiday price drop by Sony across all PS4 bundles including the Star Wars Battlefront bundle will bite into Xbox One sales. If Microsoft is willing to compete like Phil said... We might see the regular Xbox One at $300. Which in the end is good for all new customers. :)

slate911102d ago

Lol "sneaky" "underhanded"

dolphin221102d ago

Yes it's sneaky and yes it's underhanded because in my opinion he is saying this to make potential PS4 customers wait for a price drop that may or may not occur. This is part of his job so i don't really blame the man.

Spencer is a master of double speak, i find him to be the type of disingenuous character that what he says and what he really means to be two completely different things altogether, he'd make a great politician.

slate911102d ago

Yeah, dolphin22, nothing gets past you.

S2Killinit1102d ago

I agree, its shady business practices. He knows what he is doing. I think Sony should respond by spreading that MS is going to get a price drop soon. MS is way too concerned about Sony.

Sitdown1102d ago

Haha...too deep for your own good. 1) We all know a price drop is coming, we are approaching the holiday season in the US... So either a price drop or good bundle deals. 2) if the price dropped in Japan already, not far fetched to see it happen in other regions. 3) You think gamers are hanging on to an Microsoft employee's words regarding what Sony is going to do? 4) whether they wait or not, eventually they would get a system. Sad that you went that deep with that.

Concertoine1102d ago

You cant be seriously implying that now is a better time to purchase a PS4 than the holidays.

Truthandreason1102d ago

*slaps off tinfoil hat*

Spencer goes on to mention that he has a plan in case this happens, so wouldn't all potential xbox buyers wait too?

Kiwi661102d ago

So you think that he shouldn't answer questions he's asked , then you'd have people saying he's being ignorent for not responding

OB1Biker1102d ago

Actually he does not know. Thats not being ignorant. .
I hope Shu would decline answering a question about the competition he doesnt know the answer like this one.

I do think there s going be a price drop at PGW though.

dolphin221102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

Not at all and some of the guys above are all missing the point of what i am trying to say.

The man is the head of Xbox gaming division, a multi billion dollar business and therefore i would expect the man to act with a bit more class and panache.

He is attempting to pass off an assumption as fact and the reason he is doing this is simple for anyone who reads between the lines.

The proper way in my opinion to have answered this question would be for him to say we can't possibly make a comment on our competitors regarding pricing issues, that is a matter for them and a question that you would need to ask them directly.

If pressed again for an answer then he could say they may very well lower prices, we will just have to wait and see.

OB1Biker above explains it rather well.

S2Killinit1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

@kiwi
No i think they shouldnt then use it in articles. The fact that this sort of comment becomes news is not coincidence. Its deliberate.
(For example: did you know that before a person is interviewed, they come to an agreement about what questions or areas are allowed? Obviously you didnt know that).

Manic20141102d ago

Wow, you're reading way too much into it. It's just his comment on a question asked by journalist. Don't understand why fanboy's try to exaggerate small things into a big deal.

DerekFlint0071102d ago

Manic2014 when you have to lower the tone and resort to name calling, implying that i am a fanboy just goes to show that i have touched a nerve and that you have lost the argument.

It's a great way to counter the line up Xbox is about to have during the busiest shopping season.

SpaceRanger1102d ago

Counter? Yeah a price drop from Sony is definitely a reactionary move to do well this holiday against the Xbox line up./s

I'm pretty sure it's the fact that they don't want to be selling two different hard drive sized consoles at the same price. If anything they'll keep it the same price with a free game added in. No need to undervalue their console this early in the gen.

SoapShoes1102d ago

About to have? They only have 2 exclusive games coming out during the holidays...

1381102d ago

Anything to try to slow PS4 sales.

"Yeah guys, they're totally dropping the price soon."

C'mon son. Mind your own console's price. How many price drops since launch and the thing still trails month-to-month globally like a lead balloon?

TwoForce1102d ago

There are going to be price drop in this holiday.
