Tokyo Game Show – Has Western Gaming Finally Surpassed It’s Teacher?

On this week’s podcast Antony and Darren run-through Sony’s TGS press conference and cannot help feeling a little underwhelmed, could the land that inspired so many of the games we love need to look to the West to re-ignite its Spark?

Plus the Sparks discuss The Game Changers – the BBC Dramatisation of Jack Thompson and Rockstar during the development and release of GTA San Andreas and Antony gives insight into a revitalised Destiny with the advent of The Taken King and Darren praises MGSV perhaps a little too much.

We also chat about the latest gaming and tech news of the week including the newly announced release date for Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode and could we have a new developer for Half-Life 3? (spoiler alert, it’s a no!)

These cats in the article said underwhelming . Are they drunk?

Like These foreign game companies are the most creative minds of the industry

What do they mean

Those games bring a special kind of diversity that Western Developers dont have.

Plus like Jon Snow above said, there still is more to come

jon_snow1100d ago

Exactly, Problem with media houses is they knew GAMESCOM was underwhelming this year with only 5 new games announced other already announced title but they were like whoa la la GC was awesome.
While Tokyo game show we already have more than 40 games announced nearly 25 for ps4 still 4days to go, They were like meh.Bloody Hypocrite.

"Like 4 of those actually matter"

I'm. Very sure many western centric gamers also feel the way that you do..but again everyone has an opinion, no problem, the fact is what you or I or other gamers may consider or do not Consider AAA games is of course "Subjective" would you consider Minecraft a AAA game?

At one time it was a independent IP produced out side of Microsoft's own development studios, now the IP was purchased along with the company for over a cool 2 billion!

If you think that is what makes a AAA a AAA than I do not know what to tell you than we agree to disagree.

In my opinion a AAA game is one that takes up alot of a users play time playing any game that they love playing, one that keeps them entertained is what matters.

Millions of gamers like many have their idea of what is a AAA game for them.

That may or may not = what you or I or other gamers may feel if the game matters or not. It may not matter to you, but to millions of other gamers it just may.

One-Shot1100d ago

lol none of those will sell "millions". Just saying anyone could make a list look big when you pack it with fluff that probably will be average at best with some exceptions.

Davi1231099d ago

You really believe any of those will sell millions? Are you just thinking in USA or Japan? Asia? Or What?

That list just shows me that last gen the importance of Japanese games to the market dwindled as many good ones got lost in the sea of mediocrity of "capture the new market" look alike titles that came from western developers.

This gen though they seem to be making a resurgence, and I'm fine with that.

What it comes down to is that there are good and bad eastern and western developers. From my experience, the majority of good western developers also were very much in to Japanese games when they were younger, whereas the not so good ones tend to be more into the western games of their time.

If someone disregards a game due to it's country of origin, then they are really limiting their play experience, and only hurting themselves. I love Japanese games, but I would never not play a western game because it felt too western, nor would I play any Japanese game just because it's from Japan.

johndoe112111099d ago

I refuse to click on that article. It appears to reek of stupidity.

Imortus_san1100d ago

I cant call a game PS4 exclusive if it's on another plataform, and many of those games are on PS2 / PS3 / PSvita.

But I guess its trendy to dig oldies and sell then as new, to pay to replay the games you played in the past, or that you could get more cheap for another system.

And yes Japan as been ecliped last gen, the games they put out were weak.

johndoe112111099d ago

That is a massively retarded comment.

Imortus_san1099d ago

@johndoe11211
what you cant handle the truth.

joeorc1099d ago (Edited 1099d ago )

@jon_snow

That is a very good point and showing that kinda makes you wonder how anyone could even remotely say this.

Lmao, I mean its one thing to say, well those games are not or donot or are very or not really interesting to me, but its a whole other claim to say " none" of those games would not go on to sell millions..Hey some of them may not, but the.majority in their lifetime worldwide, I'm very certain they would because just because we do not or cannot track a games sales after a few weeks , does not = that the game has stopped selling, along with digital sales for world wide many games can go on to sell a million copies. It may not be in a short amount of time but over time through physical + digital distribution over lifetime of a game the sales can and yes may be not just a million but ,it can also sell over a million.

Ginpachi-sama1099d ago

So a game selling millions means its better than one that sells less....
K den guess cod is better than halo, forza, gears and crackdown combined

Highlife1100d ago

For me yes but that's my taste in games but Don't want the east to change we don't need everyone making the same games

Ol_G1100d ago

God no the moment the Japanese devs start using western devs as a base is the day i stop gaming

Ol_G1100d ago

well seeing the only mobile games i play are rereleases of old games like DQ8 FF and the Chaos rings series and if handheld would make the same shift it would mean altogether

impet251100d ago

Why do these dudes feel the need to want all of the same type of games from all over the world. Let the Japanese do what they do and enjoy the different game types. The last thing I want is more western games coming from the east.

Ol_G1100d ago

exactly different culture different tastes sometimes it seems that people just won't accept something that's different than what they're used to and it's really sad they're that narrowminded

italiangamer1100d ago (Edited 1100d ago )

I like how the most silly and clickbait articles come from God forbidden sites like this one that no one ever for the remainder of their life will hear again from . Japan can do western style games but western cant do japanese style (one rare exception is Child of Light). Oh and its funny how the most critically acclaimed games from this generation are japanese: Bloodborne & MGS5.
