Sony says China sales of PlayStation 4 limited by censorship rules

The head of Sony Corp's gaming division said sales of PlayStation 4 in China were challenged by strict censorship rules, showing the country remained a tough market even after it ended a ban on foreign gaming consoles last year.

"We are still challenged somewhat with a censorship regime that we have to work with. This can be time-consuming," Andrew House, chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, told Reuters in an interview on Thursday. "The challenge is to work with their censorship constraints."

It'll be hard to really prosper in the Chinese market with these restrictions

Nintendo have been doing really well in the chinese market for years with the iQue range. LIkewise so have Sony, just through the back door.

Their push for legitimacy in the region has ultimately shot them in the foot, when people just imported stuff it boosted the figures in japan and they didn't have to take responsibility for the content finding its way to china. Now they do.

'...when people just imported stuff it boosted the figures in japan and they didn't have to take responsibility for the content finding its way to china. Now they do'.

Too many people on this site have no clue what they're talking about, literally just making S##t up ....The Chinese and other regions are still importing regardless of official products, so how Sony shot themselves in the foot due to legitimacy is beyond me?? Neither MS nor Sony have to take responsibility for the Black Market, NO Company has to ...

Please provide a link?! /

No link. Just Actually knowing people that live there that know how the grey markets work in China. When the only means of getting a product is illegitimate and it doesn't hurt the local econmy, the authorities in china look the other way.

As soon as something gets an offical relase they crack down on the grey market, because now buying import versions of the ps4 and xbone, hurts the econmony. Are you following me here.

they've shot themselves in the foot, because china are cracking down on the imports, while sony now have to jump through all the hoops the chinese govenrment want them to in order to release their product properly.

Before it didn't really cost them anything and they didn't need to try and cater to that market it was just extra cash from an unofficial forign market. Now they have to spend millions working within it properly.

China Just want to sell his country made product all over the world but didn't want to buy other country made products.

xbox one is made in china, a long with a lot of other home electronics.

ShaunCameron1097d ago

Because China doesn't want the people exposed to foreign-made products fearing that might lead them to start demanding more than what the government is willing to provide such as freedom. Remember the last years of the Soviet Union?

It is just another set of obstacles to overcome. Besides, almost every region has some kind of censorship (Germany, Australia, other parts of Asia including Japan, and the Middle East).
