Does the Wii U Still Have a Life?

It may only seem like yesterday that the latest mad contraption to come out of Nintendo was released. Surprisingly, this November the Wii U will hit the three year mark. It’s easy to criticize the successor to the Wii considering the lack of sales and games in comparison. One thing that the Wii U defiantly strives for is quality over quantity.

Wii U is currently underperforming especially compared to GameCube, Nintendo's previous least successful console. Its selling worse this year than it did last year, which is odd because Nintendo consoles tradionally have their sales peak in their third year on the market.

That being said, I really hope Nintendo sticks with Wii U for a couple more years. It'd be pretty shady of them to just abandon the loyal fanbase that stuck with then during the tough times. Doing so would just alienate consumers from supporting fiture Nintendo consoles, plus there are stil many areas that need to be fixed with their current platform.

wonderfulmonkeyman1162d ago

It's pretty certain that they will keep it around until 2017, at this point.
Precedent holds them to a routine; 5 years per console, and each console announced comes out one year following said announcement.

We've likely got most, if not all, of 2016 left before the NX arrives, and if Nintendo is to be believed, the Wii U will still be incorporated into the new account system and Club Nintendo replacement, meaning they intend to continue showing support to the Wii U, NX or no NX.

Magicite1162d ago

Its gonna be pretty much dead next year if NX gets release date.

* I just traded in 6 Wii U games...all my Wii U games to Gamestop the other day.

I would have traded in my Wii U if it wasn't for Legend of Zelda U.

After Legend of Zelda U, I'm trading my Wii U in for an NX Handheld + NX Console.

* Wii U is worth getting for certain games but I'd wait for a price drop, because once the NX is announced, all the focus will be on that.

Any new awesome game that was going to be released on Wii U has moved over to NX.

benji1011162d ago

You probably just sold a collectors item. Clever consumer.

PigPen1162d ago

The Wii U has no life without any games. It's a wonderful console with no third party and little first party games.

wonderfulmonkeyman1162d ago

No third party?
Then explain all of the stuff during the first year.
Sucky as most of them were, they WERE third party games.[two or three of them are still quite worthwhile, in fact.]
That's just the multiplats I'm talking about, too; should we go into exclusives, few though they are?

We could also go into Indies, if you're really not convinced that it's got games enough for anyone willing to look beyond AAA third party ports.

addictedtochaos1162d ago

And there are 3rd party games coming still, ( not as many as everyone would like )

Neonridr1162d ago

lol.. reminds me of a certain handheld Sony is trying to bury under the rug.

But lack of first party? Are you serious?

ShaunCameron1161d ago

You forgot Rayman Legends. One of the highest-rated games on the Wii U. And Resident Evil: Revelations.

Monster_Tard1162d ago

It's defiantly lacking 3rd party, but 1st party? it has more new first party games than the PS4 & X1, it has been out longer after all.

Sylth011162d ago

The 'no game' argument, while valid when first released, currently holds no weight in rating the system. After all, one can hardly give it any credence at all when they look at the Wii U's library and see how absurd 'no third party' and 'little first party' sound.

Maybe the games aren't for you. But you cannot trash the system by saying the games don't exist.

Sly-Lupin1162d ago

The "no games" argument is as valid as it has ever been, because the argument isn't that there are *literally* no games, but rather too few games coming too infrequently. Considering that this is a platform that's been around since 2012, it really needs stronger support than one really good game ever 3-6 months.

wonderfulmonkeyman1162d ago

@ Sly
You would have a point if this were a brand new system that was in dire need of a lot of game releases really quickly.

But the Wii U is not in that position anymore.
The speed of new releases doesn't matter now that there is a huge amount of games in the library worth getting that can easily entertain someone between releases.

So no. The "no games" argument is not a valid complaint.
Stop trying to claim it is.

gamingpro1162d ago

It's the games that is keeping Wii U alive. While ps4 and xbone have the better sales, Wii U has the better games library.

benji1011162d ago

Im sorry but there are a hell of a lot of indies now coming to the Wii u. Not having some games is a sham, but saying it has no games is just a lie.
Pikmin 4 and Pokken were just announced. We have no idea what else is being made.

Wii U is the first Nintendo console I haven't owned in a long time.

I don't know about everywhere else, but here in The UK it's dead. I know two people that own one, and only one uses it.

Add that to Nintendo already talking about their next console, the Wii U is dead.

Neonridr1162d ago

Mario Maker seemed to make an impact over in the UK. So it can't actually be dead.

Sylth011162d ago

Nintendo working on new hardware does not mean the Wii U is dead.

After all, do you really think Sony and Microsoft aren't currently working on their next console? Are their current consoles dead?

Also, dead consoles do not still have a decent release schedule.

AKR1162d ago

They aren't talking about the NX. The community is.

Macdaddy711162d ago

I think Nintendo should Give!!! Everyone that bought the Wii U there next System Free,.. So we don't fell F€€€€k twice..... Cause I will for sure wait a couple years on Nintendo for now on,.. I bought two one for me n one for I'm ok cause I buy all new systems, him it's sad cause he 7 n loved the U... Now he want a Xbox one or ps4 cause he can't play games he want to.. Thanks Nintendo it didn't really fell good getting played!!!!!

gerbwmu1162d ago

It depends on who you are. My Wii U is alive and well and probably will be for years to come. My only concern is the longevity of the gamepad. Hopefully I can snag a cheap Wii U in a few years so I have a backup gamepad.

As far as the market goes it probably has a year left of games that will push hardware out of the door so Holiday 2016 will probably be it's swan song
