The Quit or Continue crew chat about Until Dawn in their latest spoiler-free podcast. Does it live up to the hype and deliver a genuinely scary experience? Do the choices matter? Did we manage to save anyone? Listen and find out!
Horror fans might find the tongue in cheek cheesiness robs the scares but it's still a fun, Slasher-style story to enjoy, and a really fun game to play with a group of friends. You can decide which annoying teenager to kill first!
This game would give horror films a run for its money!! Horror GOTY
Are there even other honorable mentions? 2014 was filled with solid horror titles, this year not so much afaik.
well SOMA launches soon. Not sure if you can classify Bloodborne as a horror. Fatal Frame V for the Wii U.
Bloodborne is pretty damn scary, especially with headphones in a dark room. Messes with your head.
I enjoyed this game so much. Currently on my second play though but sadly it's just not the same experience. But that shouldn't take away what was a really fun game and a must own for any ps4 owners in my opinion.
I've just finished it for the first time, looking forward to going back in for another go to see what I can do different. It's definitely got jump scares, a bit like any Scream movie would, plus a bit of a spooky atmosphere at times (asyou say on the podcast). Great game though - must be good in fact, as even my non-gamer missus got obsessed with it.
I believe it will be a close battle between Soma and Until Dawn. :) Not that i care because i can play both on my PS4. -zing-
SOMA looks very interesting - can't wait to see what Frictional games can do to follow up Amnesia. Great to see it come to consoles too, day and date.
a game like this in VR would blow minds. Thoroughly enjoyed Until Dawn by the way.
Literally. I'm not sure I could take this in VR....the jump scares were intense enough sat 6 feet away on the sofa!
best racing game forza 6 best horror game until dawn best open world the witcher 3 best fps is between halo 5 or black ops 3 best new ip bloodborne best aa batman ak
Maybe only because no other good horror games came out on consoles this year. Can't speak for PC. This game was decent. Best it twice. It's entertaining for sure but it's def not scary at all in my opinion. It's too much like a movie to be scary. I didn't get scared, or even uneasy at any point while playing it. Games like outlast, dead space 1, those games get creepy or scary because of the ambiance and everything. Until Dawn was just an entertaining slasher game. Just my opinion
That's fair enough. You're right, it's a different prospect to games like Dead Space & Outlast, but I feel like it achieved what it set out to do, which was emulate the teen slasher genre in game form. In fact, it did it so well I think it would have made a really entertaining movie!
Silent Hill 2 is a good example of horror game with good atmosphere. Outlast Whistleblower was good, but Outlast and Dead Space are average in my opinion. It's not really their atmosphere that's scary, just the jump scares they rely on.
Whistleblower.. Still makes me shudder :}
perfect time for this article as ive literally just finished my first playthrough 5 minutes ago and im still sitting digesting the experience, wow is all i can say i really didnt think the game wasgoing to be as good as that and i was shocked the story took a drastic turn . so glad i grabbed this now its a brilliant game
How many survived? On my first playthrough only 4 survived.
Only 3 survived my first playthrough. Should have been 4 really, but...one of them ate it right at the last minute. I will go back and save them all!
I had 5 left by end but was gutted coz right at the end I made a dumb move and lost my best female lol
3 for me as well. As it turns out, I royally suck at the motion-controller scenarios.
One of the best horror games I've ever played, amazing graphics with extremley talented actors and a well done story makes this game an instant goty contender for me
I agree, this was a great game and put a lot of current horror movies to shame.
I still haven't picked this up yet but i have also kind of ruined it for myself by watching others play it, i will still pick it up though because i will most likely play through it differently to others.
Ordered this today for £36. Was waiting for it to drop to £30 but seeing how the praise is so high for it I decided to go for it. Should arrive tomorrow. Huge horror fan but really hate silly "teen horrors" so I'm not totally sure I'll enjoy it but I guess we'll see.
Did you like Cabin in the Woods? Or the Descent? It has it's "silly teen horrors" moments (particularly early on in the game) but it becomes so much more as it goes on. Make sure to give it a full playthrough, it is worth it!
Didn't like either films. Descent was a utterly terrible film. Cabin in the woods wasn't all that bad but I just didn't understand what it was supposed to be. It wasn't a horror film to any extent it did have some genuinely funny moments though. I'm going to try going into the game without thinking to much about it or without massive hopes despite the praise its received. Really enjoyed Heavy Rain although that never attempted to be scary despite it being a little cheesy at times. So hopefully it'll surprise me.
You sound like you are set then. I went in knowing absolutely nothing (I mean nothing) about that game and came out really enjoying it. I didn't have any expectations either. Well, I hope you like it!
I really want to purchase this game but, im waiting for a price drop. Cant really justify purchasing another full price game when i still have arkham knight, bloodborne, tombraider, and the order to crack open.
Story wise I'd watch it as a movie and enjoy it. Maybe even the 4th wall narrative would work. The story might be cheesy and heavy on cliches but it's well executed. A good story is just a good story. No matter how much it pays homage or pokes fun at itself at times. Its scary, tense, fun. All that matters.
because it's 2015s only horror game
Until SOMA that is.....
I sell this game to friends and strangers alike in this manner: "If you liked 'Cabin in the Woods', You'll love Until Dawn."
This game was great. I think the floor to ceiling HD projector and surrounf sound system we used at my friends house definitely added to the creepy/horror factor. I am excited to play through it again next year (and hopefully saving more core characters hah) when I pick up my own PS4.
Because I said so. Enjoy this awesome game.
its the only horror game of the year so it wins
GOTY tied with Fallout 4 for me
I don't get why so many reviewers say that the second twist came out of nowhere. All the clues lead the plot to that conclusion, so the idea that it came out of nowhere makes no sense at all. I suspect that, as the reviewers themselves admit, they missed a lot of clues. So yeah, if you don't pick up enough clues, you're going to be in the dark. So this is not a fair criticism of the game. If anything, it says more about reviewers impatience to get the game over, and the resulting lack of quality of the review, than it says about the quality of the game.
